Last Minute Mother’s Day Gift Basket Idea

Apr 26 by Jamie Leave a Comment

last minute mothers day gift basket

Mother’s Day is coming up soon!  If it is creeping up on you a little too quickly – no worries, I’ve got a foolproof last minute Mother’s Day gift basket idea for you.  Walmart.com has some nice gift baskets – but when you make your own you can really personalize it.

Here are some tips to make it awesome, while keeping it frugal:

Get a cheap basket, or reuse an old one.  Don’t waste $5 – $8 on a pretty basket when you probably have extras lying all over the house.  If you can’t find one, check the Goodwill – that place is a basket gold mine and most will ring in at only 50¢ – $1.

mothers day gift basket

Pretty it up.  If your basket has a couple scuffs or is less than beautiful, do some camouflaging with a ribbon wound around the handle.  Let the kids pick out some flowers at the Dollar Tree and hot glue them on the basket where the handle joins the base.

If you have a brown or black basket that has a few bare spots – filling them in with a brown or black sharpie does the trick!

mothers day groupon gift

Fill it with FAVORITES.  Get the kids to help you think of all mom’s favorite things – like lotions, a gossip mag, nail polish, a Starbucks giftcard, a romantic dvd, etc…

DEFINITELY include gift certificates so she can treat herself a haircut, pedicure, massage, dinner out, etc…  More than flowers or chocolates – moms really love getting time to pamper themselves a little (and the means to do it).  The best place to get these is Groupon – where you usually save up to 50% on various local salons and restaurants.

giftbaskettrick

Try the Gift Bag Trick.  For this basket (that was mostly full of gift certificates) there wasn’t enough “stuff” to really fill it up. Easy fix! Cut a section out of a gift bag to serve as a colorful background for the items that are inside – while pushing them all up to the front to look like it’s “stuffed” nicely. Just grab your trusty hot glue gun again to secure the gift bag cutout to the back of the handle.

**I have this hot glue gun and it’s cheap and I LOVE it because it’s cordless.

5 Smart Ways to Re-Use Easter Eggs

Apr 14 by Paul I. Leave a Comment

how to reuse easter eggs

Every year we buy the plastic eggs for the kids and every year we end up throwing them away for being broken or because we step on them like our beloved Legos. Now you can turn all those plastic eggs into something educational and fun for them to play with and give them something they can play with AFTER Easter. There are endless ways to re-use Easter eggs but here are just five easy and quick ways to turn them into something the kids can learn with without even realizing it. This total project will take you less than 20 minutes if that to finish!

You will need:

  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Sharpie Markers
  • Scissors (to cut the eggs apart for games later)
  • Words Lists (Optional and can be found by googling)

word family eggs

Word Family Eggs:

  • Put a word family ending on one side of the egg and different letters that will make words with it. You may need to separate the eggs top and bottom and put them back together. You can then turn the egg to match with the word.

Compund Words

Compound Word Eggs:

  • Write one part of each compound word on each side of the egg. You can then have them learn these words and turn it into a game by separating the eggs pieces and making them match up.

Addition Eggs

Addition Eggs: (You can also do this for subtractions, division, and multiplication)

  • Write your equations on one side and the result on the other side. You can take your eggs apart to allow them to be turned easier. Turn it into a game by taking all the eggs apart and they can match them with the correct answer.

Math Eggs

Number Match Eggs:

  • Write the number word on one part of the egg and then the numeral on the other. Separate them to turn it into a game/puzzle to solve. You can also draw the tally marks and dots to add more challenges to this game.

Uppercase

Uppercase/Lowercase Eggs:

  • Write the uppercase letters on one side of the egg and the lowercase letter on the other side (This may also help with their writing and recognizing how to differentiate between when writing.)

Make These Candy Easter Baskets for Under $12

Apr 11 by Paul I. Leave a Comment

Easter Candy Baskets

Who said Easter has to be plastic buckets all the time? Every Easter pre-made baskets are filled with items that about half of them the kids don’t like. So why not make them something that you KNOW they will enjoy. Make them an Easter Basket with their favorite candy for under $12.00 total if you’re starting off with no supplies.

Supplies you will need:

  • 6 Theater Box Candy $1.00 each
  • 1 Nerd Ropes Candy  $1.00
  • 1 Glue gun or double sided tape $2.76 for glue gun
  • 1 Glue Stick 10ct $0.97
  • 1 Easter Grass $1.00

You can also substitute 2 of the candy boxes with a piece of small cardboard.

Assembly

Step 1: Pick four Theater Candy Boxes that are similar in size. Two of them will be sides and two will be ends. Notice above the white papers along edges and sides, this is where you will need to apply glue/tape to stick the boxes together. After taping/gluing just stick together as you see on the right side of the photo above.

Bottom

Step 2: To make the bottom you will need two of the theater candy boxes. Lay them flat next to each other as shown. the sides that are touching are where you will need to glue/tape. On the right side of the photo above you can see where you will need to add tape/glue to stick the Step 1 portion onto the bottom.

nerd rope part

Step 3: Add glue/tape to the very ends of the Nerd Rope Candy and attach it on the inside of the theater candy boxes. You can then bend and mold the Nerd Rope Candy to make it look more like a handle. Then just add your Easter Grass and other items. These do hold up with quite a few items in them especially if you use double sided tape and let it sit for awhile before using it.

What makes these Candy Easter Baskets even better is most of the supplies can be found at your local grocery store or big box store like Walmart. You can use these as baskets for the bigger kids too and even use them for other holidays besides Easter. Use them to surprise your spouse with a date night and put movie tickets etc inside.

DIY Hairbow Holder for Under $7.00

Aug 16 by Paul I. 1 Comment

Hairbow Holders

With 5 young girls in the house a common problem in house is my feet stepping on hair bows and clips here, there, and everywhere. So I decided there had to be a solution! Of course this solution included Walmart. It’s really easy, simply start by heading on over to your local Walmart you can get all the supplies you need to make your own DIY Hair bow Holder for under $7.00! This craft is so easy even me (a dad) or the kids can do it!

Supplies1Supplies you will need:

  • 3/8″ Ribbon, $1.97
  • 5/8″ or 7/8″ Ribbon, $1.97
  • Mini Glue Gun, $2.67
  • Mini Glue Sticks, $0.97
  • Small Wooden Shape, $0.57
  • Scissors

Ribbon

Step 1: Cut a long piece of the wider ribbon (this will be the ribbon you attach the bows to) and cut a piece of the 3/8″ ribbon a little bigger than the size of your cut out (as shown above). You can use a lighter to heat seal the ends of the ribbons to avoid fraying.

Step 2: Make the 3/8″ ribbon piece into a loop as shown, the ends will look like they are crossing over. Use the glue gun to secure the ends together.

Step 3: Mark your ribbon spots on your wooden shape at the top and bottom with a pen/marker. Apply a small amount of glue and attach your ribbons. Booya! No more stepping on hair bows in the middle of the night, those are almost as bad as legos! I am not even kidding….OUCH!

In Process

Now you see that craft only took 5 minutes total to make and the battle of the hair bows vs my feet is over! My feet are now safe at night and the girls will be able to find their special bows and clips without stress, tears and drama!
