Price Matching at Walmart

Hi! Price Matching at Walmart is a killer way to save some money! Here is some info to get you started. Then when you are done, go to the links at the bottom to see what people are price matching at their Walmarts in your area!

Our Ad Match Guarantee

We’re committed to providing low prices every day. On everything. So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell us and we’ll match it. Right at the register.

We gladly match the price in the following types of ads:*

  • Buy one, get one free ads with a specified price
    • Example: Buy one for $2.49, get one free (BOGO)
  • Competitors’ ads that feature a specific item for a specified price at a specific retailer
    • Example: $2.99
  • Preferred shopping card advertised prices for specific item
    • that are in a printed ad and require a competitor’s shopping card for the discount to apply
  • For fresh produce and meat items
    • when the price is offered in the same unit type (lb. for lb.; each for each)

*The following are guidelines and limitations:

  • We will match any local competitor’s advertised price.
  • We do not require customers to have the ad with them to honor a competitor’s ad.
  • Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)

We DO NOT match the price in the following types of competitor ads:

  • Items that require a separate purchase to get the ad price
    • example: “Buy [item A] to get [item B] for $C”
  • Items with no actual price that require a purchase to get free product
    • example: “Buy both [items A & B] to get [item C] for free”
  • Items that require a purchase to get a competitors’ gift card
    • example: “Buy [item A] to get a $B gift card
  • Buy one, get one free (BOGO) ads with no actual price given
  • Going out of business or closeout prices
  • Percentage off
    • example: “All mascara, 40% off”
  • Competitors’ private label price promotions

We do not honor:

  • Ads when the actual price for items cannot be determined.
  • Internet pricing
  • Misprinted ad prices of other retailers
  • Competitor ads from outside of the store’s local trade territory

Basically, if you take your local grocery store ad and see a great deal on Blue Bell ice cream priced at $3 a 1/2 gallon, Walmart has it for $6 you can take your local ad and when you check out show them the price and they will override their register to give you the cheaper price. It has to be a normal sale price, no weird sales, or B1G1 free or anything like that.

Price matching alone can save you a ton of money at Walmart. Why price match? Because I don’t want to run all over the city to different stores to get the good deals, I would rather just pick it up all in one place!

Now I have found that when you load your groceries onto the belt at Walmart you HAVE to have your ad ready, when they get to that item you must give them the competitors ad RIGHT THEN so they can change the price. If you wait until they are done ringing you up to show them the price match they will not go back and change the prices. Just a tip!

You may find it helpful to print out and carry a copy of the Walmart price match policy with you.

5 Steps to Successful Price-Matching at Walmart:

  1. Check the other grocery stores sales ad’s for great deals. Make a list of the items and prices. Check to see what coupons you have or can print to match up with these sales. Check electronics, I have saved HUGE this way at Walmart!
  2. Take a look at the price matching policy. They will not do B1G1 free sales, but they will do 2 for $4 or 2/$4. They will also NOT do % off, like 25% off all soda.
  3. Go shopping! Bring your other store ad’s with you. Most will require that you have them. Don’t cut them up, they will need to verify the dates on them. You can only use a current ad.
  4. I always place items that I am NOT price matching on the belt first. Then I place my items that I am price matching and lay the ad on top of them so I don’t forget… or get distracted by children! I inform the cashier that I am price matching and show them the ad. I saw a woman once that had placed sticky notes on her items, the cashier LOVED her! I don’t have that kind of time, but it was a good idea!
  5. Do the “Happy Dance” that you saved a bunch of money!

What does walmart consider a competitor? There is a shoprite about 13 miles from my house. It’s the only one with in 3 hours of me. (they are new in town and more are on the way). Shoprite is in the next town over. Can I go to the walmart near my house and do price matches there or do I have to go to the walmart in the same town as shoprite?

well, i guess its all how your walmart is (i guess) i am a cashier at a walmart in wv and i have price matched stores that are 1-5 hours away like aldis, giant eagle , sparkle mart, convenient mart, kroger….. because i live in a town with 3 grocery stores witchey’s, save-a-lot, and walmart. most people don’t even tell me what store it came from they will be like “hey, those strawberries are a $1.25 , thanks. ” or ” milk is on sale 2.28 this week.” those are actual price matches this week. haha

Can Walmart limit how many items you buy with coupons?

I have been ad matching, which we call comping, short for competition ads, for almost a year. A few months after having my son, I realized how much formula and diapers was going to add to our bill each week. I love to find the competitors ads and match coupons to it. Sometimes the savings is drastic and sometimes the savings at least pays for my gas.

no, RR’s are coupons you get after the transaction. They are covered in the coupon policy

Each Walmart can set their own boundaries for the area in which they will price match–and they should price match any store that has a printed ad (not just an online ad). I write a price matching blog for the Dallas area, and most Walmart’s in the cities have a 15 mile radius, but the more rural ones are much, much farther. In my opinion, the best way to find out for sure is to call customer service and ask.

Hello. I was wondering which store walmart did price matches with or if they did it for all the stores?

it is just about any store in your local area that competes with Walmart for your business.

I was in Walmart today doing my shopping and when I tried to price match our local Fruit stand ad that has “ALL BREAD and BUNS .98″ they would not honor it. This fruit stand runs this ad every week and I have been price matching at Walmart using these ads for the last 5 weeks with no problem and then all of a sudden they stopped. I asked for the manager and she came over and said no. When I tried to explain to her that I had been using this for a while, she was not interested. I asked her for a number to contact about this and she rudely walked off without a word but I did get her name. Any comment? Thanks

I’m sorry she was so rude. It’s just the worst when you feel like you’re doing everything by the book, and then it’s a hassle and they look at you like you’re a crook. I think the manager might have been thinking of this part in their price matching policy: “Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)” If your ad said “all bread” without giving any examples of what size loaf, or what count buns, or if they were whole wheat or multi-grain, etc, then it wouldn’t be possible for Walmart to determine that the two products were actually the same.

Perhaps one other thing could be–if the ad is printed but not circulated in the paper, sometimes I’ve seen problems with those.

Having a SmartPhone, I use ShopSavvy to scan the barcodes and get pricing for both online and local merchants. I drove 12 miles to the Walmart in Olathe, KS because it was the nearest store with the combo Stinger Indoor/Outdoor Defense package that I wanted. According to ShopSavvy, Walmart has that combo package for $40 both online and in local stores. I found the item (priced at $55 at this store) brought it to a cashier and said I wanted to price match. She called customer service to ask and the manager said he would be over. On arrival he (Bob) refused to price match even when I showed him that it was a Walmart price. He told me to shop site-to-store if I wanted it at that price, and walked away. I feel he was not providing any service at all and I will definitely pass that on to anyone who asks me about customer service at Walmart.

Walmart doesn’t price match their own stores. I know it seems a little silly but I am sure their is an accounting reason. You can do site to store or their new order and pay cash at the store.

And how does the “order and pay cash at the store” work? Is that a variation fo the Site-To-Store with a layaway twist in that I have to pay up-front?

Can anyone please tell me if Walmart changed the coupon policy and price match lately? I went to Walmart to price match the Cheerios to the Randalls ad for $1.88 and was told it is Walmart’s policy to either price match or use a coupon but not both. I was looking at the coupon policy and pricematch and doesn’t state you can do both at the same time, am i missing something? Any help greatly appreciated, thanks

Paul May 10, 2012 at 9:45 pm

You are allowed to do both. One has nothing to do with the other.

I was told the same today and they told me if I use coupons I can get only one item not 3 per their store managers policy?!?

In my walmart it seems to depend on the mood of the cashier. Some times they ad match no problem others the same one picks at everything and is rude. You would think since it is highly advertised that they price mathch, they would give their people some kind of training so they dont act like jerks and do it on their own terms when we pricematch. I say go with male cashiers because they are the nicest and not rude like some of their female cashiers (don’t want to offend anyone just my personla experience).

My price matching tip is to go first thing in the morning. The cashiers are not busy, no lines & they seem more willing to help you with matching items & coupons…i guess because they don’t feel rushed with others waiting in lines.
I drop the kids off at school & take the younger ones with me, have my list ready & BAM! in & out within 30 mins… :)
