Easy DIY Harry Potter Bottlecap Necklaces

Sep 8 by Monika Leave a Comment

3

Harry Potter is a big thing in our house and the kids were over the moon when they saw I was printing something Harry Potter related. Bottlecap Necklaces are super easy to make and great for birthday party favors. You can also skip the necklace part and make these bottlecaps for hair accessories for your favorite Harry Potter fan!

Harry Potter Bottlecap Supplies

You will need: (You could find most of your supplies at Walmart in the Jewelry department but we were lazy and just ordered it all online)

  • Harry Potter Bottlecap Images (Believe me when I tell you it’s better to use photo paper with the gloss on it than just regular printer paper)
  • Silver Bottlecaps or Colored Bottlecaps
  • Necklace Bails or Split Rings (you will need the Hole Puncher HERE if using slip rings)
  • 1″ Epoxy Stickers
  • E6000 Adhesive
  • 1″ Hole Punch (you can also just use scissors if you’re really good at cutting)
  • Ball Chain Necklaces

Cut Out Images

Step 1: Cut out all your Harry Potter Bottlecap Images at once and set aside

Stick to bottlecap

Step 2: Trial and error taught us that using actual photo paper is best to print your images on because you will need to stick the images to the bottlecaps. If you use regular printer paper the adhesive will come through and ruin the image. You DO NOT Need a lot of E6000 under the image

Bottlecaps Done

Step 3: Next you just need to add your adhesive drops to each bottlecap. After applying the drop make sure to push down and get any bubbles out so the image comes through more clear.

Attaching Bail

Step 4: This is where we may go separate ways as you can use your Necklace Bails or Slip Rings to make it a pendant able to be placed on a chain.

  • If using bails: Apply a small amount of E6000 to the bail portion that will be on the bottlecap and then find the middle top of your bottlecap (refer to the front of the image to make sure it lines up)
  • If using Slip Rings: Use your hole puncher to make a hole then attach your slip ring (this is honestly the more sturdy route for these)

Step 5: Just attach your ball chain necklaces (or necklace of your choice)

DIY Hairbow Holder for Under $7.00

Aug 16 by Paul I. 1 Comment

Hairbow Holders

With 5 young girls in the house a common problem in house is my feet stepping on hair bows and clips here, there, and everywhere. So I decided there had to be a solution! Of course this solution included Walmart. It’s really easy, simply start by heading on over to your local Walmart you can get all the supplies you need to make your own DIY Hair bow Holder for under $7.00! This craft is so easy even me (a dad) or the kids can do it!

Supplies1Supplies you will need:

  • 3/8″ Ribbon, $1.97
  • 5/8″ or 7/8″ Ribbon, $1.97
  • Mini Glue Gun, $2.67
  • Mini Glue Sticks, $0.97
  • Small Wooden Shape, $0.57
  • Scissors

Ribbon

Step 1: Cut a long piece of the wider ribbon (this will be the ribbon you attach the bows to) and cut a piece of the 3/8″ ribbon a little bigger than the size of your cut out (as shown above). You can use a lighter to heat seal the ends of the ribbons to avoid fraying.

Step 2: Make the 3/8″ ribbon piece into a loop as shown, the ends will look like they are crossing over. Use the glue gun to secure the ends together.

Step 3: Mark your ribbon spots on your wooden shape at the top and bottom with a pen/marker. Apply a small amount of glue and attach your ribbons. Booya! No more stepping on hair bows in the middle of the night, those are almost as bad as legos! I am not even kidding….OUCH!

In Process

Now you see that craft only took 5 minutes total to make and the battle of the hair bows vs my feet is over! My feet are now safe at night and the girls will be able to find their special bows and clips without stress, tears and drama!

Red, White, and Blue Yarn Stars

Jun 1 by Paul I. Leave a Comment

Red White Blue Yarn Stars

Looking for something super easy and quick to make for your July 4th cookouts or parties? These Red, White, and Blue Yarn Stars took less than $10.00 to make and you have leftover supplies for other projects. Time wise these yarn stars took less than 5 minutes each to make once you get the first one done and get the kinks worked out in the method.

Supplies

You will need:

  • Yarn Skeins (red, white, and blue) $2.88
  • Star Buttons $5.77
  • Cardboard
  • Star Template
  • Adhesive of choice (Loctite works wonders or double sided tape)

Step 1: Take your Star Template and trace the outlines onto your cardboard. If you want a star big enough for the front of a mason jar you will need to make it a bit bigger than the size of your palm.

Where to apply Tape

Step 2: As shown above these are the places you want to either apply your double sided tape or the super glue. The left is one side of the star and the right is the other side. Do this BEFORE you try to wrap the yarn and it makes your life a lot easier.

How to Wrap Corners

Step 3: Peel off one corner of the double sided tape and stick the end of your yarn down first and then begin to wrap the yarn around the corner. Make sure to not pull too tight on the yarn or it will bend your star. Once you are down to the end of the corner flip it over and cut your yarn. Attach the end of the yarn with the double sided tape or adhesive as shown. Repeat for all the corners.

Wrap the MiddleStep 4: To begin wrapping the middle part, on the back side glue/stick the end of your yarn. As you can see in the left side of the picture above bring the yarn over the front and down. Wrap this same side about four times and then move to the other side (as shown on the right of the picture above).

Wrap the Middle AgainStep 5: To continue from step 4, turn your star counter clockwise and do the same thing on this side. You’ll notice you’re making a sort of V when you wrap. Keep turning and wrapping until you no longer see any of the cardboard towards the outer sides. (The inner cardboard can be shown because your star beads will be covering it)

Step 6. Layer your star beads by size, you can just use two if you like. Attach the beads to the middle of your yarn stars with super glue.

To achieve the display shown at the very top of this craft you will need:

  • Mason Jars
  • American Flags ($0.97 for 4pk)
  • White Rice
  • Flameless Battery Candles ($2.50 for 4pk)

DIY Fabric Letters Under $20.00

May 17 by Paul I. Leave a Comment

Wooden Letters A

Need something to finish your childs room but can’t find it in the store? Now you can customize their very own wall letters and do it all with supplies you can find at your local Walmart store for under $20.00! You can also make these for just decorative words like Home Sweet Home, Love, and more!

You will need:

  • Wooden Letters $1.47ea
  • Mod Podge $4.67
  • Paint Brushes Under $4.00
  • Fabric (Buy by the yard or quilt square packages were $8.97)
  • Scissors
  • Pens/Pencils
  • Command Hooks (optional) or other means of hanging letters

Tracing Letters

Step 1: Decide what word/name you will be making and what color fabric you want for each letter. You will then need to trace (lightly) around the letter onto the back side of the fabric as shown. (Pattern needs to be on the bottom). Lesson learned for tracing lightly, if you don’t trace lightly or use a like colored pen to the fabric it will bleed through when applying to the letters in the next step.

Step 2: Cut on the outer side of your traced shape, you can always go back and trim down further if there’s too much fabric for your letters.

Apply Mod Podge

Step 3: Take your paintbrush and apply a very light coat of Mod Podge to the wooden letter. Less is more (another lesson learned) when applying. Slowly apply your fabric letter and be sure to smooth it out as you go to prevent bubbles. Don’t push too hard on the fabric as the Mod Podge will come through the fabric.

after applying

Step 4: After applying your fabric entirely you may notice some slight fraying to the fabric, you can either trim this off or apply heat from a lighter to it super quick (too long and you get burnt fabric marks)

Step 5: Allow letters to dry overnight before testing them. You can then apply Command Hooks and hang your personalized new homemade word/name you made on a budget!
