Walmart Double Coupon Guidelines for the Pilot Stores

Aug 1 by Paul Ivanovsky 162 Comments

I finally spoke with store management at one of the WV Walmarts that are part of the pilot program. Below is a list of guidelines, please keep in mind this all via verbal communication, I have no written documentation to support this.

Folks, this is better than we could have imagined.

1. They are doubling all MFG (ONLY) coupons up to $.99. That means $.75 is worth $1.50.

2. They are price matching and using double coupons in WV

3. You must present each coupon with the item you are buying as they are doubling manually and must adjust the individual item, they cannot adjust the total.

4. Limits are as stated on the coupon (no limit stated means no limit)

5. Are you freaking kidding me, what else do you want?!?!

I am still working on trying to get a list of participating locations and if there are any differences between stores or if the policy is standard for all Walmarts that are part of the pilot program.

Walmarts that are doubling, this info is via – readers, so call ahead before you go just to make sure they are and which days.

Madison, Ohio

Charleston, West Virginia

Utah County, Utah ( 7 Walmarts are doubling)

Huntington, West Virginia

Wayne, West Virginia

Findlay, Ohio

** From what readers have said it is very time consuming to check out. It think that if everyone is very patient and understanding that it will be a successful trial and hopefully Walmart will expand to more locations.

Thanks to Reader Craig for the Information!

I asked my local Walmart in Texas about the doubling of coupons, and they looked at me like I was insane. So, I called 1-800-WALMART and they said they knew nothing of it either? So glad this was posted today, thought I was losing my mind!!

They are making the coupon doubling as irritating as it can be though. Doing it manually AND right after each item. This could be a great thing for WalMart if they’d take care of that. I price match and use coupons and I hold the line up as it is! I could imagine how bad it’d be with this! I sure hope they fix the kinks and make it permanent!

Even though it is a pilot program, they are waisting too many resources on the manual process. All they needed to do was to load the new coupon doubling program into the register download, transmit it to all of the stores with the regular updates, then give access codes ONLY to the managers of the participating stores. This would leave out the HUMAN error factor and improve their BOTTOM LINE that they seem to be so worried about these days!

I live about 3 miles from the Madison, OH Wal-Mart. Love the double coupons, hate the wait. Because it must be done manually it can literally take an hour+ to cash out a handful of coupons (and I mean 30-40) and your groceries. However, the overage is allowed! My last trip was 40 items, 40 coupons, and $25 in my pocket! Took about 30 minutes to cash me out but I got paid to buy things I needed 🙂

In the old days before cash registers got so fancy and scanners were used couponers were take a roll of scotch tape to the store with them. As they put the item in the cart, they would tape the coupon to the top of the box, can etc.

I read an article about the Utah stores and it said they doubled up to $.99 only. For example a $.40 coupon would double up to $.80 but a $.75 coupon would only double up to $.99. Maybe it just depends on what state.

Saturday when I was at Walmart which was out of town for me they did this with the coupons and each item. I kept wondering why the lady was looking for every item and then entering the coupon and taking SOOO long? None of my coupons would have doubled as they were all $1.00 or more, but I’m going to call and see if they are one of the stores double tomorrow just for curiosity sake. We are in Indiana and that was the Muncie store.

The 2 Parkersburg, WV stores are now accepting 6 coupons per product per transaction. So all that you need to do is to organize multiple transactions. This is being done to DISCOURAGE those “extreme” couponers who clear the shelves of all product every time they shop. Mainly for the woman who bought 300 bottles of Wisk detergent when they were on sale several weeks back.

I wonder if corporate has thought of doing designated lines for coupon users like they do for 20 items or less. This way they wouldn’t tick off the other customers that get behind a “couponer” and they would have to train a limited amount of cashiers (hopefully the fast ones) to learn the new rules. Just a thought if anyone has a contact at corporate. If I didn’t coupon, was in a hurry, and I got behind myself, I would be VERY frustrated. : )

I do not know if that would be a good idea Kim. The reason for the 20 items or less would be so that people can get in and out. I f there was a register for only coupons it would probably be backed up to electronics. As for people getting ticked off at a couponer, it would not take as long if the cashier was better informed about the coupon policy.
Coupons make up a big part of a stores income, so one would think the managers would train them properly.
Coupons have been around for quite a few years. When my mom was young, ( present she is 61), you could trade them in for money. She grew up poor so her and her sister would go to doctors offices and take coupons out of magazines then take them to the store to trade them in for money ( I am not sure if this was legal, lol), but my point is couponers have been around for a long time and employees should be aware of the policies:)

The 2 Parkersburg, WV stores that are participating have TWO designated coupon checkouts. Because of this, it usually takes 30 – 45 minutes to move up to the next spot in line. If they are not busy in another lane, they do not mind if you use it. The worst time to go there with coupons is near midnight, when they do their computer changeover. I got into line at 10:45pm (in the only coupon lane open, mind you). Then waited WITHOUT moving until 11:45pm. Since my coupons expired THAT DAY, I went to another line, where they were happy to help me.

I think they could diminish the frustration of long waits when we price match and coupon (hopefully soon it will be dbl coupon for my stores) by opening more than 4 regular (non express) lanes at the Super Walmarts in my area. Whats the point of having 20 something registers!

I will say, I have stopped shopping at Wal-Mart just because it generally becomes a hassle for me & it irritates me with price comparison, but, if they did double coupons, that would be the ONLY place I would shop!! If we all started to write e-mails to Wal-Mart hopefully they’ll expand to more than just a few stores!!

My Walmart in Wilton, NY said they will double coupons today when I asked (and I doubled one!) The CSM said something to the affect of that it’s not normally their policy but they will do it if a customer asks…..okay! I got the impression this may not be part of a pilot program but maybe due to the fact that our Price Chopper across the street just stated doubling coupons…I may be wrong though – either way, great news!

I live in Idaho and our Walmart has been accepting competitor’s couopons for some time now and have included the Albertsons Twice the Value coupons as well. They double everything up to $1, so a $1 coupon gets you $2 off. After probably a year or so of doubling the coupons, they still have to manually override the price of each item for which a double coupon is being used. Yes, it slows things down, but if you put your coupon with the item as you take it out of your cart, it does go relatively smooth. If I have a lot of them, I will always tell anyone who comes behind me that I have a lot of coupons and that it will be a while, so that they can make an informed decision about whether to stay in that line or not. Overall, its a good program, but they do really need to find a better way to deal with the doubling.

They REALLY should have used the Highlands-Triadelphia (Wheeling) WV store as one of their pilot stores….

because Management there is AWESOME, the Cashiers there are AWESOME and I just know they would have found a way to make the process work smoothly for everyone.

I hope it expands because with Kroger now limiting, and ONLY doubling to $.50 on the first 3 coupons…WalMart will have me for LIFE with doubles 🙂

I noticed that our walmart has been going up on price on a few things. Maybe its beacuse they are getting ready to double! The soy sauce was a 1.44 and now it is 1.74 and that happened within the last couple of weeks. There was something else that went up I just cant remember what it was! I really hope they do start to double here in my town. I really dont like to get alot of things from there because of the hassle I have to go through but Ill go thru it if they double!!

I called the corporate office and they said there is no list available of the participating location and that it was left on an individual store basis on whether they participate or not – so they have no clue.

So I started calling stores this is what I found out after calling 10 locations – I finally got a manager that seemed to know something about it and he said that the only Wal-Mart’s that are doing it are the Wal-Mart’s in areas that have double coupons. And they are doing it to be completive – so with that said since no stores here double here in Houston, between the price matching and coupons they are already completive enough.

I sure hope the testing goes well & they take it nationwide! I’m sure there’s no other way we’ll get to double or round up coupons here in San Antonio. Neither of our other two grocery stores in this city do it (Super Target or H-E-B), so we’re not exactly a prime candidate for a pilot program. Go for it, Wal-Mart!

Parkersburg West Virginia WM’s are doubling coupons up to 99 cents, no limit. They are also price matching Target (the closet one is 1.5 hrs away lol),
price matching a BOGO sale – even if there isn’t a sale price listed,
taking 2 coupons for a BOGO sale,
will NOT give you overage on a doubled coupon (only on a coupon $1.00 or more)
Are pre-ordering and giving you the PM amount, even if it comes in after the sale is over
AND THE BIGGIE……they have designated COUPON FRIENDLY registers!!!
You do have to lay out the coupons with each item and PM item, they are reducing the price of each item by the coupon amount as they scan, then taking off the coupon again.

I’ve seen posts of some major hauls people in this area have made this week. This area has so few stores, I have noticed in the last 2 years that Krogers has been super busy (double up to 50 cents) and WM has really seen a decline. Besides one small local chain, these are the only shopping options here, so I’m guessing WM will have to see an increase in business with the new policy and have my fingers crossed that it will stay beyond the 3 month trial period (that time frame is a rumor so far).

it’s a nightmare — had a .35 off of tea — tea was scanned 13 times in the attempt to scan, take coupon, void first scan and insert item at price minus coupon again. I was double charged on several items. The entire trip had three of four items that I was charged for more than once to a total of over $20.00 more than it should have been and I had less than 20 items to begin with. I had somewhere I had to be and since it took me 40 minutes to check out I didn’t have time to go to the service desk and had it returned and re-entered there like the person next to me had to do. This would be wonderful, if it had been properly planned for within their system. We were told in Hurricane,
WV (that would be north of Richmond) that 0.75 would double to 1.00.

I have been to my local WM (Charleston, WV) twice since the doubling started on Saturday. While I have made some awesome purchases, I must say it is quite time consuming in the check out line. It really shouldn’t take an hour per person! I was very patient the first trip and was mostly patient the next trip. My WM will double a 75 cent Q to $1.50. They said they would double up to a 99 cent Q to make it $1.98 but I haven’t had any of those yet! A doubled coupon amount that was over the cost of the item had the amount applied to the final price. For example, I purchased toothpaste which I price matched for $1. The Q as for 75 cents. The cashier had to ring and price adjust the toothpaste to 25 cents which would be the price after price matching and the doubled amount of the Q. Then after ringing that, she would scan the coupon which took 75 cents off.

All of the cashiers and managers seem confused. I had people behind me in line getting mad and throwing things because it was taking so long. Thankfully they didn’t throw things at me!

Oh, I live in WEST VIRGINIA. It is a state of its own and has been since June 20,1863! 🙂 I prefer to go barefoot but I do own several pair of shoes. I have running water and electricity in my house. One leg is not shorter than the other from walking around on the side of the mountain all the time. And yes, my family tree has branches!

I agree Paul. I am in Texas and only have 1 Wal mart and 2 HEB’s here in Victoria. I am quite certain they will not ever include us in the list unless we get another chain in here to give them some competition. Our population has grown so much with all the drilling and industrial plants going up here we really need more stores. It is crazy to shop here!!! I have noticed that the walmart added more checkers. Even though I love to coupon shop, I get a pit in my stomach when I have to get in line and people start stacking up behind me so I keep my trips to every other week or less. Oh, on a good note we have 4 walgreens and 1 brand new CVS store.

I went in with just a few coupons and came out saving over five bucks! That’s a lot to a stay-at-home-mom! AND the checkout guy was nice but you do have to make sure you put each coupon with each item. As long as you work it in advance – this is awesome! I’m getting organized for a second trip! 🙂

I live close to the summersville wv walmart and they are not doing this. all the other stores that are I would have to drive more than 60 miles one way just to get doubles. That is the closest one that doubles. Not worth it.Hopefully they start this in my area soon. I have a kroger in my town and they only double up to .50 and only allow you 2 like coupons which sucks. As for walmart pricematching a bogo with no price mentioned in the ad that is against the policy they are NOT supposed to PM a bogo unless the price is mentioned. If you all want this to work correctly and so they keep deals like this going and to expand them to other areas please follow the coupon policies they have in place. I know it is usually up to the individual store. But when you PM bogo’s(with no price mentioned),use doubles, stack coupons, etc that will result again in extreme couponing and people will again be clearing shelves and things like that again and it will cause these programs to be stopped eventually because the stores will be losing money.
The policy states if a walmart does double you either choose doubles,PM’ing or using competitors coupons not all of the above.

Drama at the check out! Last I heard Walmart was accepting Manufacturer’s coupons. I went over the weekend with a few Target and Meijer coupons that had an amount, ($1.00 off wyb 2). I used the same type of coupons 2 weeks ago with no problems, but this time they said they only accepted the store coupons that had both the price of the item and the amount off clearly printed on the coupon. Really I’ve never seen a coupon that said, “Wonder Bread 2.99, get 1.00 off. But that is the only type of competitor coupons my WalMart claims to accept. I’m in Hilliard, Ohio.

Wish they would test pilot some Walmart’s in Texas here, around Dallas area. Looks like after reading some article son this, the program is a success. If so, all Walmart’s should start doing this, as I read there sales slipped a bit. By doing this they can lure in more customers and sales will increase, and groceries will be more affordable to the consumer. FOr example, coupons from $.25- $.35 cents will be tripled, coupons from 50 cents to 75 cents will be around up to $1.00. Anything over $1.00 is face value.

I live in Spencer WV (About an hour from Charleston, the capitol)–Our Walmart is doubling. It does tke a while but everyone is trying to work together so it continues. Couponers have sort-of united and are trying to help make t as easy as possible for the cashiers. We put or tape our coupons to the product and put like products together at checkout. If we are comp’ing to another store we put sticky notes with the comp price on the item like: 10/$10 Comp to KMart eggs (that is one I used yesterday!!!) and we are not required to buy 10doz eggs–although I did. They do honor BOGO and can use 2 manufacturers coupons too (one on each item) They are doubling up to .99cents so if I present a $0.75 coupon it will discount for $1.50. The way our cashiers are doing it since the registers are not programmed yet—is on the first item they deduct the amount of the coupon manually with a calculator—so if you have a .50cents off 2 loaves of bread—-and the regular price is $1.34 ea–the first item will be on the receipt as $0.84 the next item will be the reg priced bread @ $1.34 then they scan the coupon at its orginal value of $0.50. That’s how doubling is recorded properly and is shown on our receipts.—It is time consuming and takes a while but none of us are complaining. It’s worth the time. Our Walmart has coupon friendly registers so people that are not doing it are not irate. ANd the cashiers in well-trained at those registers. They are in process of training the other cashiers. The un-trained cashiers are the only ones having problems or complaining about dealing with it–but that is all changing. We have been told it is a pilot program and will last through October–but have not been told if they will adopt it fully and continue yet. They are honoring all area stores to compare to—some stores we compare to are as far up as Morgantown as we do not have very many stores near us–we are very rural locale. Most of us do take copies of ads with us just in case we need to verify but the policy states “No ad necessary”—but the casiers sometimes ask to see it if we have it–I think that is so they can understand exactly how each ad is worded. THey have to lean so many prices and then it changes with each eek due to the changing ads of course. SO we all just take thm with us. SOme people download them into their laptops or Iphones and show those–but you cannot “show” a coupon it must be printed. They will not accept/honor competing ads that do not have an exact price to match. If the ad says a % off—they cannot do it because they do not know how much to take off–and since they are doing it manually–it makes sense. It must say a specific amount of cents off and it works just fine. We love this and are trying to make sure we abide by the rules. We match the exact size item for item—oz for oz. A few people have gottne through asking for comp’ing for an item that was much larger than that depicted in the ad—that is the same as shoplifting/stealing. That shold not happen–it is abusive of the system. I hope it continues and helps our economy here!! If you want to shop in Spencer, WV you are welcome to our little town!! 🙂

I live 20 miles from the Mason, WV Walmart and they double coupons up to 99 cents. I usually get there around midnight and it takes about 1 1/2 hrs to shop, making sure I meet what’s allowable on the coupon. I price match and coupon so checkout can get a bit frustrating since the coupons have to be manually deducted and the price match overridden. Checkout usually takes 15-20 minutes, depending on the cashier. Tonight I had a cashier that had only worked register for 3 nights. I felt sorry for her. Thank goodness they had 2 lines open and no one was behind me. I’ve heard that this store has 2 registers open during the day just for couponers. I wouldn’t know since I go so late. I live closer to Gallipolis, OH Walmart but at this time they don’t double coupons. I only shop there with coupons over 1.00. I have to say that the cashiers in Mason are wonderful. The cashiers in Gallipolis have an attitude and seem to give a lot us ‘savers’ trouble.(and they don’t even have to deal with doubling) Apparently they don’t know their own policy and a friend of mine has called the manager twice only for him to say the cashiers were wrong and he would be going over the policy with them. I guess he might get to that in a couple of years. 🙂 BTW…two weeks ago I was told by an employee that the doubling program would be in the register system sometime in November. Tonight I was told they were stopping the doubling due to the Christmas frenzy. I don’t know what to believe.

Well here is some unfortunate information! As of Nov. 1st. South Charleston’s “Southridge Location” Store #2036 in WV is ending the doubling of the coupons. It was a great go and we did have tons of couponers. I can honestly say that I believe the reason it is ending is due to the fact each Manager had their own policy on the coupons. It was a headache for not only cashiers but also for the customers. I would not even shop at my own store with my coupons because I saw daily how the policy would be different for each manager. I use the Nitro Location, they got it together. Not only did they do the coupons right they gave me my overage in CASH!!! Yes CASH!!!. I am not sure if Nitro, Hurricane, Barboursville, Huntington and the new Quincy store are ending theirs as well. Call before you go!

Yes—I live in Spencer, West Virginia and we (couponers) were told it will end Nov 1st. Our Walmart will still Price Match and will still accept coupons but will not double. We are very sad. Everyone is talking very strongly about shopping at Krogers in Ripley WV (26 miles away)—:(

Nitro Walmart is also ending theirs 🙁 I asked them today on my trip down there. So sad. Everyone needs to call corporate and complain. Our CSM’s told us our sales were up since the doubling started yet they are taking it away. Bye Bye sales and bonus’ 🙁

Okay so it was great while it lasted. As of October 31, 2011 they are taking this away from us. I was told by a manager that if they continue this policy Walmart would go out of business. Are you kidding me??? This small Walmart store (no deli, no optical, no hair salon) in a small town, that is one of the only 2 grocery stores in our town will be run out of business because of doubling coupons???????? What a load of crap! Our town doesn’t have much but Walmart is where we go for all of our shopping needs. If not we have to drive over 30 minutes to get to another large grocery chain. Take it away Walmart and it will be well worth my drive to a larger grocery chain in another town whether its 30 minutes or an hour away!

I live in West Virginia and our Mason Walmart was doing the doubling, along with 3 other Walmarts that were within reasonable driving distance to me, Parkersburg, Huntington and Ripley. As of Oct. 31st. they have stopped and said that it is due to the holidays. They said that it will be coming back after the first of the year and they will be programming their computers to double so it doesn’t take over an hour to check out.

I heard the same thing just before they stopped. I can understand them stopping it until after the returns season. Can you imagine the check out during the Christmas shopping season with couponers AND Christmas shopping both going on?

Which K-Mart is doubling? I never heard about this going on. Do you know if they are still doing it? Can’t wait to hear this one.

I live in Elkins WV and our Wal-Mart never even tried the double coupons. I hate it! At least Kroger doubles up to .50 but it would be great if it were up to $1.00 like some of them do.

I live in Utah and they only double up to a $ so .75 only goes to $1 but still its a good deal. I have to agree the manual entering stinks but the cashiers are mostly nice about it and if you keep a good attitude its not so bad. Plus you have time to compare with other couponers 🙂

Walmarts in Summerville, South Carolina are doubling coupons as well! It does take a little longer to check out but you can usually tell which cashiers are going to be quicker than others. The cashiers REALLY appreciate if you separate all the items that have double coupons for from your regular items. I just load all my regular items on the counter, leave a little space and then load the items that have double coupons. Makes it easier on them and those waiting in line behind you.
