Price Matching AND Using Coupons

May 20 by Paul Ivanovsky 127 Comments

Price matching and using coupons is such an important way to save at Walmart. I know that many of you are having problems and I posted about this last week. I call weekly and talk to corporate about this, and I get the same answer each time that you can do it. I know that some of you are still having trouble and I hate to hear that. Try calling corporate and ask them to work with your store manager to help them understand what is in their policy and make shopping a better experience for you! Always be nice and never get ugly, it really won’t help, but be firm and just try to remember that you are helping all the couponers in your community.

This is a comment left by Deborah this morning:

Hi Paul,
I have called and spoke with Walmart Customer Service regarding price matching and using coupons. What I was told is that it is NOT up to the individual store managers. The Store’s ARE SUPPOSSED TO ACCEPT MANUFACTUR’S COUPON’S AFTER THE PRICE MATCH, per Corporate policy. I mentioned that this part of the policy is not addressed in either the coupon nor the price matching policy. The Customer Service Rep, stated that it is available to all the store manager’s and the cashiers should be trained accordingly- as it is available in their internal training resources. So if anyone has a problem with price matching AND using MQ’s with a price match, customer service should be contacted. I hope this helps anyone experiencing these training issues.

I will have to say that I have NEVER had a problem with any of the walmarts in my area. They know their coupon policy quite well! But just in case I ALWAYS carry a copy of their policy with me incase I need it.
I do this for all of the stores I shop at. Its just a backup if I need it 🙂

Ditto. It bums me out to see so many people having problems with their stores. For a long time I didn’t like Walmart, but their price matching wrangled me back in and I’m thankful and grateful that I always get cashiers at my local store that know their stuff.

My walmart won’t won’t price match walgreens, rite aid, or cvs, and they get mad and act really rude when you use coupons. I have found that a couple of cashier at walmart know me now and they will price match and let me use my coupons with out and ungly faces or being rude. Does anyone know why walmart they have to get an over ride when you use alot of coupons???

I’ve had some of the cashiers act rude to me too when using coupons! Most of them are nice, though.
Their policy says that if you use over 40 coupons in one transaction a key turn will be required. I plan my trip according to that but for some reason, yesturday I had less than 40 and a manager still had to be called over!

If you’re having problems with rudeness from cashiers, please, please contact the store manager and tell them the experiences you’ve had, or address the cashiers directly when they’re displaying that kind of behavior. This has been going on at a lot of stores lately-not just Walmarts- and these issues need to be addressed. As customers we’re still spending our money there and don’t deserve rude looks or comments. Period. You’re not trying to steal from them, you’re trying to save money. And they have no right to treat you otherwise.

I was told that if your coupons total more than $50 that they have to get an over ride and that it is basically a security feature to keep the cashiers in check and prevent fraud. But it may vary from store to store.

I have also had several problem price Matching at my walmart in FL. CVS had an ad for pepsi 2 liters for .99 and it said on selected varities (which normally includes, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Diet Caffiene free, sierra mist, and Pepsi Max) but the picture in the ad only had regular pepsi and diet pepsi. The cashier would only price match the pepsi and diet pepsi because that was all pictured, I argued (nicely) with her that Pepsi max and sierra mist are also included but she said no because of the pictures. I also have been able to price match after ECB for CVS on TGLEE milk but then the next time they wouldn’t match at all even before the ECB. They say they don’t match rewards cards. But then she went on to price match cereal that said “With Card” right next to it. I just get frustrated and ususally give up without calling the Manager because especially now during the summer I have my 15 month old and 4 year old with me. And they always make me feel bad because they say “I don’t want to lose my job” which I understand I guess I just need to be more vigilante and ask for a manager.

Must be a Florida thing. Here in Sarasota my manager said they would price match however I could not use a coupon with it. It was for CVS and it was 200 ft away from the Walmart so I went there and bought my product. Of course the manager could care less but I was proud that I took my buying power someplace else. Now I will always have the coupon rules of Walmart with me. Also will follow through with a phone call. Thanks for the advice.

This I can actually help with; I just quit my job at Walmart and I happened to be a cashier. If you have over $40 worth of coupons or if you have an overage of $10 or more you will have to get a CSM’s approval. Most of the time they can just do it on the palm pilot, but if it’s way over they will have to come over with a key.

As far as cashiers not knowing all the rules about coupons they honestly DO NOT teach it at. The only reason I ever learned all the rules was because I wanted to start using coupons and saving a bunch of money. They do have one paper stating some of the rules at each register, but honestly unless they’re really slow and bored no one reads them… Also since they’ve changed the policy a lot of the people that had worked prior to it don’t exactly know what’s been changed since they suck at communicating policy changes even it’s a big one like that.

Most of the cashiers will comp and let us use coupons but then there are some that think we are stealing by comping and using coupons and they also say they dont get their monyback from the coupons!!! Apparently, I am one of the lucky ones that live by a store that has not given me a problem(Olathe, KS) I price match CVS, Walgreens, Aldi’s & Big Lots and use coupons. I do bring in the policy as well. Each register has on their pole right below the register number two signs that read ‘We Price Match- no need for an competitors ad ‘and ‘Coupons both manufacture and internet printed are accepted’. Our store has a internal radio/loud speaker that constantly plays WalMart ads or the special going on and there is a price matching advertisement announced quite frequently that I hear as I wonder up and down the aisle about matching ads. WHEN IN DOUBT, before you shop, maybe going to the CS desk. or speaking to a CSM with the ad in hand and ask before you find your self checking out with a not so friendly cashier. i have done that before to avoid a sticky situation while checking out.

I have a question. I have never price matched at Walmart, but am ready to start trying this out. If you price match Walgreens, will they give you the price before or after Register Rewards? And if it is after RR, then can you still use MQ on top of that? Thanks for the help.

Plan on before RR but sometimes they give you after if you show them the ad. It is a grey area for them.

I just had an issue with Walmart price matching and using coupons; first time I have had an issue with using both. I whipped out my policies on both, and basically spent 45 minutes training the CSM, cashiers, and ASM.

I was price matching the Walgreens ad this week for Scotch brand Magic tape (3/4in by 300in roll). Walgreens has it for Buy One at $1.99, Get Two FREE. Walmart did not carry the same style as pictured in the Walgreens ad, however they do carry an equivelant match. Magic tape Refillable Tape Dispenser (the brightly colored dispenser) is the same size (3/4in by 300in roll) and type (Magic tape) as stated in the Walgreens ad.

So, Walmart ad-matched each tape to $0.66 each. I purchased 26 rolls at $0.66 each. I then wanted to use (26) MQs after the ad-match. The cashier aid they couldn’t do a price-match and coupons on the same items. I pulled out my poilices, and spent a very long time explaining to the cashier, and then the CSM, and finally the ASM. They had recieved an email explaing that they were not to allow price-matching in conjunction with coupons on the same items. I immediately pulled out my phone to look up any changes online from the copy I carry in my coupon-binder. (There were none.) So they started to put in my coupons. The ASM even went on to say that they could not give me back any money from the coupons. I politley said, “Yes, you can. Your policy says you will give me the choice of applying the overage to other purchases I am making, or Cash Back. I’m not buying anything else, so I would like Cash-Back today.”

I made $10.16 today by taking 45 minutes to explain to them their policies.

I have never price matched at Walmart. I only recently started going back with my coupons bc everytime I go the cashiers are so rude when they see I am using coupons. I live in ATX also and I will not stand for it, I call them out on their behavior everytime. I go the the Parmer or RR store…they seem to be getting better. I did try the Pfluger location and had no problems whatsoever, and the cashier was very polite.

This is what makes it so hard for other customers, a comp ad is matching the same item if it is a name brand, not an item that is similar, then to not honor the others stores limit on how many you can purchase, makes it hard for the customers who do try an follow the policy………….if you are going to play the coupon game please be fair an honest.

      @ grannyemma-

Like I said, Wlamrt did not carry the one pictured, but the Walgreens ad stated Scotch Magic Tape 3/4 by 300in, or 1/2 by 450in. The tape I price-matched at walmart was Scotch Magic Tape 3/4 by 300in, just a different style of dispenser. Walmart’s policy is: “Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.) Walgreens’ ad did not specify that only the “regular tape dispensers” were included, it just said -Magic Tape, 3/4 by 300in or 1/2 by 450 in.
Also, Walmart’s policy says nothing about following limitations given by other stores. In the guidelines on the Ad-Match Guarantee I have printed from online, it says I don’t even have o have the ad with me to price-match. I’m not sure why you’re fussing. Walmart makes $0.08 on every coupon they accept, and I always leave some for others. I would be upset if I went shopping and the shelves were empty, which happens often at Walgreens and CVS, who are he retailers that most often set limits on purchase quantities, but I know Walmart has such a huge inventory of product in their Warehouses to cover us Extreme Couponers.

If you ever have a problem with WalMart cashiers, tell them to call the store manager. If you continue to have a problem like Robin did, then dial 1-800-WalMart on your cell phone right there at the register. Once Customer Service verifies that you are correct, ask them to explain it to their store manager and hand him/her the phone! Complaints about a store to the Customer Service number directly affects that stores bonuses. Too many complaints puts them on a red list and gets them a visit from Corporate. My daughter is an ASM for a store here in TX and according to her, no manager wants a visit from Corporate due to complaints. I know when the new policy posted on the corporate site, her store had not received anything in store. She had to get her manager to look it up himself on the corporate website. Every time I have called the 1 800 # I have been told “Walmart will make it right”. Sorry this is so long but I hope it helps.

I was at a wonderful cashier who i love dearly and she kept apologizing for the way the other 2 were acting. As I started to walk out the cashier that didnt even know me looked in my cart and rolled her eyes at me. I have never been so upset in my life, I mean whats so bad about saving money???? I have only been couponing 5 mnths but i try my best to go by ALL the rules. I agree with the person below me, just like there are cashiers that can be jerks and ruin it for someone with coupons there can be couponers that are jerks and ruin it for the cashier. I have tons of horror stories about customers with coupons. Sometimes the cashier is actually right, it does happen even though we aren’t “smart enough..” Imagine working at Walmart 8 hours a day 5 days a week and dealing with all of the customers, the nice ones and the just plain nasty ones. Customers can walk away and take their business else where, the cashiers are stuck there until their shift is over. It can be really stressful at times, so cut them some slack.

you should always report a cashier/csm/asm if you feel you are treated unfairly! you should never be treated w/an attitude just because you’re using coupons… & then to have the same cashier talk about you to other cashiers? yes, they’re human.. but so are we?!?! just because some ppl abuse the ad match/q policy… doesn’t mean we all do! i know that not all cashiers are as bad as the 5 or 6 that i’ve had horrible experiences with.. so i treat them all w/respect.. even when they are horrible! i finally reported one cashier & csm.. something that i normally don’t do.. but i was fed up w/the attitudes! 2 days later, i get a call from the asm apologizing to me, asking for names, & then giving me his name & number & said to ask for him the next time i run into any problems! i just asked him to pls make sure they understand their own policy & not make me feel like i’m stealing from them when i use q’s or pm. i haven’t been back there – i’ve been going to another one the next city over where i have NEVER run into any problems w/using my q’s or pm’in:) i submitted comments online for that store.. because it’s always good to give kudos as well.. not just negative comments:)

Maybe then you can help me with their Preferred shopping card policy. I called corporate the other day because CVS had a certain toothpaste with card for $2.79-$2.00 ebr = $.79. I asked them which price I would pay and they said the price you would walk out of the store with so I said, so I don’t pay the $2.79, I would pay $.79 and she said yes. Then I decided to call my store and ask them and I was told the same thing. So today when I went with my ad and then my coupons for that toothpaste (the coupons were $1.00, so I would have had overage) they told me that I had to pay the $2.79. I explained to them what their store had told me and what corporate had told me. So came home, called corporate and they said once again that I would pay the $.79. So now I am waiting for a manager from the store to call me.
My question is, which price do I pay for, the $2.79 or the $.79?

I have had similar problems in my Walmart they refuse to honor any CVS ads. I contacted the store manager regarding the matter and he to claimed that Walmart didn’t honor it. So I explained that on the website it stated that they did long story short I carry both policies for Pm/Coupons. I still have problems but hey they HAVE to honor the stores correct policies. I have the policies because of Paul and Tiffany thanks. It has saved my husband some head aches he can’t stand the whole store at our register gocking.

Walmart will not match unless it is the specific item in the ad. This means it must be the exact item pictured, or the ad must specifically state “All” or “Any” in writing. I ran across this when price matching Alpo brand canned dog food two weeks ago. The Kmart ad pictured Alpo Homestyle, so that is the only variety they would match. It also stated Pepsi 2 liters 10/$10, and Walmart would not match the ad for Diet Pepsi because it was not what was shown, nor did the ad mention all Pepsi products. We did call a manager over and she verified, and upon reading Walmart’s policy, I have to agree with the Pepsi. Still a bit iffy on the Alpo, since it stated Alpo Dog Food and the can sizes in the sale, but I was only getting the Homestyle variety, so didn’t need to push that one.

I used my own judgment. I wanted the Starbucks coffee that Walgreens offered a couple weeks ago, but their ad specifically mentioned “House Blend” 11.3 oz for $6.99. Since that is not the flavor I usually buy, I did not try to match it to WalMart to get another flavor. But to my good fortune, this week, no flavor is mentioned!=)

I understand that I am not alone in the problems with WalMart. Two weeks ago I went to a lane that had a trainee (thinking that the trainer would know what she was doing) Boy was I wrong, I had a cart full of items, a tired & hungry 4 yr old & a soaked 8 month old & my 70 yr old mother (whom also had a cart full of items). After we stood in line while she explained how to ring the items up (which I expected) I handed her my coupons & she started taking all the items out of my cart & going through each & every item. She then proceeds to tell the trainee that they can only ring up coupon for what the item is priced. I tried to explain to her that this was not the policy, but she kept ignoring me. I kept asking her if she knew the coupon policy for WalMart, but she would not respond so finally after about the eighth time of asking I just told her that I didn’t want the items. I asked for the ninth time, “Do you know your coupon policy?” Finally she answers no, but we can not ring up for more than what the item is priced. Unfortunately, neither my mom or I had the policy with us, so I told her to just forget it. I immediately went home (after changing the baby & feeding the 4 yr old of course) & called the manager. He was very understanding & told me that he was going to make copies of the coupon policy & have the cashiers post them up by the register. The next day I returned & got the same items, but went to a different cashier, she rang up all my items with no problems. The next week I went back to get items for my stockpile & guess what? The cashier tried to ring up the coupons for the price of the items. I asked her if she knew the policy & she said she did, but they could not ring it up for more than the price. I said sure you can. Her response to that was No, I can’t that would be like giving you free food. You guessed it, I pulled out the policy & showed her what it said about overage & she finally rang everything up. I might add I got $159.86 worth of items for $16.38. Moral to the story NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR POLICY. By the way, the store is located in Bedford, TX so if you are shopping there, please please watch closely.

What amazing timing for this…I had a HORRIBLE time at Wal-Mart tonight. Thankfully it’s my first bad trip; however, had it been my first time in, I may have never gone back. The cashier was RUDE, and made me feel like I was stealing from her. I also carry my coupon policy with me, and she continuously ignored my trying to show her what the policy states. She did not want to accept my coupons for over the value of the product. She called over a total of 3 different CSMs 10+ times throughout my transaction, none of which knew the coupon policy either, and none of which wanted to see my copy! One thing I had trouble with is that I didn’t have the Staples ad to show the .99 for the Scotch tape, and I was hassled by her and the incompetent CSM over needing to show an ad to “PROVE that I am telling the truth” (her words!!!). It was my understanding that I did NOT have to provide an ad to them, however, that is not stated anywhere in the coupon policy. Is there a Price Matching Policy out, or is there anywhere in print that states that we do not have to have ads. I always bring them if I have them for back up, but if I am going to drive over to another store, just to get the ad, then I will simply purchase my product there, rather than taking it back to WM.

I love the prices at WalMart but I don’t love the hoops you have to go through to receive your savings. You would think that they would have a training class on their own policies. I guess not only do you need to carry the policy with you, but also the newspaper with all the ads. Isn’t there even a commercial now for WalMart that is telling the checker to “match-it”. I do know what you mean about being made to feel like you were stealing from her, it’s like the cashier that said it would be like me getting my items free. I always make sure that my coupons are for exactly the right product, it is really not our fault if the item is marked less than the value of the coupon. Plus, we did not make up the store policy. Wal-Mart have a training class on good customer service, including your store policies on price matching & couponing in general.

There is a price matching policy that you can get here:
      http://walmartstores.com/10563.aspx

On that page over to the right are links to download PDF’s of the newest coupon and price match policies.

Oh, and it states right on it that you do NOT have to have the ad with you to price match…though if you have it, I’m sure it will help things go a little smoother with ornery cashiers!!

walmart no longer has any customer service at all. about a year ago i asked the cashier her name because her badge was turned around after she was being rude, so i could let the store manager know. she put her finger in my face and started bobbing her head saying that i better not give her name to the manager. i reported it and they watched the cameras and saw it. they gave her 3 hours customer service training and made me fill like i inconvinenced them. i get my list and coupons and look like a speed racer when i shop, i know what i need, i get it and get out….

I price matched at Walmart this week with the Walgreen’s ad. I put up all the price match items first and let her know before she started that I was price matching. I did have the Walgreens ad with me since I actually went there first. So, she did the price match on everything, except for the Maxwell House Coffee she matched it to the decaf instead of regular, which was $1 more, but that’s ok because it was still less then Walmart’s price. Then I put the rest of my other sale items and coupon items on the belt. When she was finished and saw I had coupons, she rolled her eyes and proceeded to scan the coupons on the belt scanner, which took longer and then she was going to try to dispute the Black Flag Fly paper and fly swatters I got because they were not pictured on the coupon, well she didn’t do it but she took forever to ring through the 20 coupons I handed her. It was my first experience with price matching, it didn’t go too bad but I will definitely make sure I go to a cashier who is looking a little more chipper and friendly next time.

I had similar bad experiences last week trying to match a Walgreens ad price plus use a mfg coupon – no go at 4 different stores.

In reality, the response you get to coupons in store is NOTHING like the wonderful, happy, cheerful “MATCH IT!” employees in the TV commercial.

I price matched at Walmart last week for the first time. The cashier was happy to do it and also accepted my MQ without hesitation. Luckily, I have not had any bad experiences with cashiers or management in either Walmart or Walgreens. The Walgreens in my area goes out of their way to help you get the best deal. They even tell you the best way to do your multiple transactions. They know me there now, so they always open the film or make-up register for me to check out. So far…so good.

Well, I fell blessed to have a wonderful walmart lol i price match and use coupons all the time never have i had a problem, although i do carry thier policies in my binder when i go i have never had to use them. They do not even look at the ads i bring i simply tell them that so and so has this item for a certain amount and they match it no questions asked, then after all is rung up i give them my coupons and they scan em all through, no problems with this either. They have spent millions on their new ad campaign of price matching, therefore i dont feel i am taking anything from them or cheating them in any way. I do suggest however to find an employee that looks friendly and older ones usually are more willing to help and not as impatient…

I am a cashier at walmart and my store will price match any store with or without the ad. I think its very unfourtuinite that so many people are having such difficulites with the price match policy. The cashiers and csms diffently need to be trained better in the stores up above where people are having problems. I always am very polite and friendly when people are price matching and using coupons. I will even offer price matches that i have seen in the paper, most times customers dont even know about the deal and love that i offer that to them. I am sorry for everyone whos having trouble. You could also call and talk with your store manager, if the problem resides with them as well, go higher up in managment.

Sounds like you are a great cashier! The store I work at has quite a few like you, but I also shop in other stores occasionally, and am so grateful for the ones in my store! Cashier training at most stores seems to be hit or miss…they hold meetings but not all the cashiers come. I ad matched a Publix item at another area store, and the cashier had no idea how to do it. The cashiers at the store I work in actually stay…many stores have a very high turnover rate.
People that are having issues, definately call the store and report your issues to management. The cashier number is at the top of the receipt. They can’t fix problems if they are unaware that customers are having them! You can also call the 1-800-walmart number…it will be routed directly back to the store and management will have to call you back.

        Leslie is right!

We live near WM’s GO and I have lots of family that work for WM.

You’ll always have associates who are company people trying to save WM money, when WM doesn’t need these people to do so.
There are just rude people out there and I don’t have a problem with telling them they should find another job or gain better PR skills.
There are bad managers out there, too. That’s why good managers don’t last long at a store, b/c they are moved to stores where management was bad.

I actually have a problem with my local Wal-mart. They do not go off the actual coupon policy or like the lady at Wal-mart told me “our” coupon policy. I tried calling Customer Service & the lady told me that the manager has their own policy guidelines but no one will tell anyone anything. I do know they do the price matching but as for the coupons being added onto the price matches, really can’t say. In my mind, you’d think once the corporate posts a policy that ALL Wal-marts should go along with that policy..period, but I guess not.

I did my first price match at Walmart yesterday. Used the WAGS ad for Scotts TP and Fruit Crisp. Cashier’s only comment was a tongue-in-cheek “how dare WAGS beat OUR low prices!” as he price adjusted the items. Then, he cheerfully accepted all my coupons. I saved $15 from price matching, $41 in coupons AND a PRICELESS amount of frustration due to WAGS not having either item in stock (I checked 3 stores mid-day – ALL stores had gotten in trucks, none had the sale items on them.)

THANK you Paul, for continually pointing out what CAN be done with price matching. I hadn’t wanted to try it as I imagined it to be time consuming (it wasn’t!), so I’ll be doing this more often. Walmart is slowly winning me back as a shopper!!

The cashier checked the dates of the S&S add then changed the price and the coupons went through with out any overrides/managers/etc. I’m so happy I may have to do this some more. I did keep the price match items separate and put the add right next to them to remind me and the cashier. Happy shopping!!!

I’ve had wonderful experiences price matching with coupons in Parker, CO and Elizabeth, CO. They are great. Last week I had 5 coupons for $3.00 on an item that was on clearance for $2.00. I bought 5 and received the $5.00 applied to the rest of my transaction. It was great. I love to price match at Walmart because our Walgreens are normally out of stock by Sunday afternoon. I do always carry the ads with me, put the price match items separately, and note the cost on my list. This seems to make things go much smoother when they are ringing them up we don’t have to go back and look at the register tape to find each item.

Here in Oregon, our Wal-marts are saying you can only buy one of each item you have a coupon. Lets say candy bar. If I have 5 candy bar coupons I cannot use them for 5 candy bars. I can buy 5 candy bar’s but can only use one coupon. They keep referring to the new signs up and the part of the policy that state ” Only one coupon per Item” Anyone have any insight or link to Wal-mart corporate responding to this. We all know calling corporate CS is useless.

My store always honors 10 for 10 ads. Watch the wording though. I mentioned this elsewhere, but it was good info so I’ll share it again.

I had a King Soopers ad for american Beauty pasta for $.99 each. If you purchased 10 or more then King’s would give them to you for $.49 each. It was stated clearly they were on sale for 99 cents, but if you purchased 10 or more they were 49 each. I only grabbed 4 and my cashier was great about breaking it down for me(she’s fab..I wish she was there every day I go there). She said I could have the 4 pkgs for 99 cents each, but that if I wanted the 49 cent price I had to get 6 more. She rang up some of my other stuff while i ran back for 6 more.

      hope that helps!

Excellent advice Paul. I had an issue yesterday. Price matched Purex and they wouldn’t accept mfg coupon also. Called corp. they said the store is wrong. The Asst. Mgr refused to understand that the price match is one policy, coupon policy is another policy. Walmart does BOTH. So I got ahold of his mgr at Walmart, he apologized and will work to get the word out to all the csr and mgr at that particular store. But until you confront the problem and get everyone educated the problem will continue until we are all on the same page. You shouldn’t have to have a 30 min. debate over their policy, educate, educate, educate!!

I will say I work for WMT and for a cashier to be rude because you are trying to ad match and use coupons, i would report them to MGMT, but if u call them down at the register in front of GOD and everyone.is not the way to go In my honest opinion. it’s better to ask for MGMT and tell them ur problem. As far as using coupons and ad matching I DO IT MYSELF and have NO problem saving u as much money as i can.

Love Robyn in ATX’s comments about having to educate the Wal-Mart folks about their own policies. : ) The fact is, they are so swamped, and many times, under-trained, that they really are just ignorant of the way that things should work. It’s a shame, and I think corporate should send you a check, Robyn, for a reasonable hourly minimum wage for the amount of time that you spent training their employees for them. I am sure that management was embarrassed to have a customer explain their own policies to them (actually I kind of hope they were), but hopefully it will help them to take it upon themselves to be better informed next time. If they don’t know (which clearly they didn’t) they should take care of the customer first (POLITELY), then find out what policies they are ignorant of and train themselves accordingly later. The customer comes first, always has and always will in retail, and anyone who forgets to apply that philosophy to their work practices shouldn’t be working with customers. Remembering when Mr. Sam was the sheriff in town, and wishing for that kind of rock-solid, customer-sensitive, value driven, consistent across-the-board (and across the country), hometown sense of business practice today.

I am not sure the word “ignorant” is fair. I am a cashier at WM and I am also a coupon/price match junkie. I was using coupons before it was the cool thing to do. You have to look at it from a cashiers perspective. We love to save people money, we enjoy taking care of our customers. With that being said, since couponing has gained popularity there is a new crop of coupon users that come into our lines with a rude sense of entitlement. Not all of them, but there are some out there that are ruining it for the rest of us. Like they have earned his right to “teach” us our policies and are going to educate us how to do our jobs. Do you let people come to your work and tell you how to do your job? How would you respond if they did? I’m guessing you might be a little bitter towards people, perhaps even rude. The bottome line is that as cashiers, our hands are somewhat tied as to what we are allowed to do. That’s not ignorance. Yes, there are corporate polices. No, not every store manager has taked the time to communicate these properly. If you encounter a problem, call and speak with the store manager. Please do not take it out on the cashier. Believe me when I say, you aren’t teaching us our policies by waving them in our faces. We are doing what we have been told to do. We WANT to help you, but you have to let us. Be nice, be fair and be patient with us, it will get you much further than any printed policy ever will.

Laurie, I agree there are a lot of cashiers who share the same viewpoint as you and you make some very valid points. I have to disagree with you on your beef with the word ignorance, your example of store managers not knowing and/or educating their employees on current policies is the definition of ignorance. I agree your hands may be tied, but it is do to ignorance of the policies. It’s not a malicious use in this case. There are many cases where we do have to educate the employees on what the WM policy is, there are some CRAZY things that I hear about what employees believe the policy is. I appreciate you and really all the cashiers, I am a huge Walmart ally, but facts are facts and there are a lot of misinformed cashiers, CSM’s and managers out there. I encourage everyone to coupon and PM with respect and courtesy. Thanks for all you do.

Question – Does anyone know if the Walmart Neighborhood Markets also are following the price match policies or is that only for the main stores?

I know that there are many negative stories about Walmart cashiers & we are all (myself included) very quick to tell everyone about our horrible experiences. We also need to speak openly about our wonderful experiences at Walmart as well! Yesterday I went to Walmart with ads from 3 different stores as well as a stack of coupons. The cashier was terrific! Not one growly face, not one complaint, not one snide look .. She kept a smile on her face the whole transaction and at the end said “wow, you just a lot!” .. I made it a point to thank her for her patience with me, and I walked over to the front end manager & told her how great my cashier was. As the saying goes, you attrack more bees with honey than vinegar.

I’ve had both types of cashiers and readily admit I ‘profile’ when choosing a lane for checkout. I hate it when I get to checkout and my profiling yields no pleasant looking cashiers. That happened tonight- they all looked tired and cranky, and I was right. I ended up with two different cashiers, who took FOREVER, totaled my purchases, took my money, then changed their minds on two of my coupons and for whatever reason, then charged me for the two items in question AGAIN. WTH? I’m not really sure what purpose that served- I still paid for the item and received the coupon savings in the first transaction. Then I paid for the items again without coupon savings on the second transaction. I was too tired to argue, but I’ll take it up with customer service on my next visit. Does this make sense to anyone? Maybe I’m just too tired to figure this out right now…

Hi. I just wanted to let everyone know about something when using price matching and using coupons at Walmart. I used to work there. Even though they allow you to price match, they still charge tax on their original amount. They do not give you the tax break on the price match. You can check your receipt and see that this is true.

I love how cashiers always want to debate about what is pictured on the coupon and not the wording! It takes a lot less time to just scan the coupon to see if it beeps rather than standing and arguing with you about something you know is correct. Wal-mart frustrates me, and I don’t really even like shopping there anymore. Its kinda said because I work for Sam’s Club, but I would much rather shop at Target over Wal-Mart these days! If I do shop there I always look for a guy to check out with because most of them dont like to argue they just simply scan the coupon, usually without even looking at them.

the other day i went to my local walmart b4 work to price match some colgate products using a Cvs ad, it was the last day for the promotion. At the check out the cashier said she couldnt price match Cvs and called the CSM to back her up on that. I left empty handed… I had just wasted so much time preparing for this shopping trip that i decided to call the 1800 and see what was going on. The lady took down my info and appologized for the inconvenience… she said she would check up on that and that they would call me within the week. I said ok even though i was a little upset because the promotion would be over by then. A few hours later the store manager called on my cellphone apologizing and said to go back whenever was convenient to me that she was going to honor the ad price… she even had the ad in her office for reference. i went back the next day and went to customer service to be rung up. the cashier was hesitant once again to do it but i told her that her store manager was aware of it and to call her if that was a problem. she called and the manager ordered her to take care of me…. she was like sure, she is already being taken care of. had it not been for the store manager, maybe i would have left empty handed again. knowledge is power… know the policy and what you are dealing with so that you can stand your ground and have a successful shopping trip.

unfortunately you are wrong on this one. many of the competitor coupons have a stated price and those are the only ones they will accept. Mfg coupons can be for amounts off.

i called the corporate number because the walmart i went to was very rude about me using coupons and price matching. i was still polite and upset about the whole ordeal. so when i called the lady told me i was right they was wrong and she was sorry and would let the dm know what is going on. so i thought that was it, but i received a call from the dm and i told her the story and she pretty much said the same thing. and on top of that she sent me a gc for 15 dollars for my trouble. all i wanted was to make sure that the cashiers as well as the csm is well train in coupons cause i love walmart. so please dont give up and keep on calling cause we are not wrong for using our coupons and if we are wrong just tell us in a nice way so we can do better. so every time i get a rude cashier or manager i will be giving their corporate office a called. things will get better.

I have had cashiers that have been very rude to me. One once asked me if I could read when I was trying to price match because I was in the wrong store. It was definitely not a good time. However, I like that the store I am at now has lines with coupon specialists. They really understand the policy. I don’t mind going to a special line. One day the cashier even told me that I had missed one of my items in my price match ad. She then proceeded to take the item and go ahead and give me the price. I would have missed getting that item for the ad match price. I think it is a great idea.

I feel embarrassed to price match! Our WalMart is not the friendliest place it is by far one of the busiest stores in our area. How do I begin this? They do not like when I have a lot of coupons either much less trying to get them to price match!

My 3 Walmarts (Myrtle Beach, SC) were honoring my coupons for $3.00 off 2 J & J products. I was getting 2 J & J first-aid kits for 97 cents each and making $1.06 on every 2 kits. The coupon would not scan on their cash registers so they would just key in by hand. All of a sudden they decided that if they would not scan and did not say “manufacturers coupon” on it that they wouldn’t take it. On the back it clearly states how they will get their money back. Everyone that I know that had the coupons never had any problems getting the coupons through. Also I had $1.00 off Nexcare products. Nexcare band-aids were $1.00 per box therefore making them free (I had a pdf coupon) they wouldn’t scan on their cash registers but they were just keying in “vendor coupon” No problem. Then they changed again and said that if they didn’t scan I couldn’t use them. I can’t help it if their cash registers are not scanning correctly. Today I went to buy a package of cherry tomatoes and the bar code wouldn’t scan and the cashier couldn’t key in the code as it wouldn’t come up. She got so frustrated that she said I don’t have time for their bad codes and she threw the package of cherry tomatoes into my bag. I got them free.

I have had 3 different stores in Northern California do the same thing. One of them would not price match AND use coupon. Another would not match a store with reward card add, and the last was just rude about both. I called corporate twice and they told me the same as you, It is their policy to do both. I also received a phone call from my local Walmart manager, who apologized for one of the day shift managers rudeness, and along with honoring the price match and coupon I was previously denied, gave me a $25 gift card for the inconvenience. I still try to avoid the price match/w coupon scenario here at Walmart, the gesture by the manager was quite generous, but the stress of it just wasn’t worth the time. Good luck to everyone out there!

I’m a couponer and have been for a long time and started ad matching for a number of months at my WalMart and never had any issues at all. The cashiers I always deal with are good to me because I keep it honest with them and they know me.

Be absolutely positive of what the policy is for Walmart because unfortunately, the turnover rate is so high that by the time they get someone trained, they leave and you are constantly have to explain the coupon policy to someone new who is unfamiliar with it.

I went one day to price match some hot dogs and then use manuf qs on top of it and the cashier tried to tell me that I could not use the qs since they already price matched. I politely told her I could and waited patiently as she went to CSV and verified what I told her.

Hang in there and don’t give up. It’s worth it in the end.

most of my experiences with walmart have been awesome. i too profile my cashiers. after a couple of times you really get to know who does a fine job and who just doesnt care to argue the fact of who is correct in the coupon policy. i price matched for the first time this weekend and had an excellent experience!! my only real trouble is the cascade coupons and have resigned to the fact that i will simply have to use them the next time i am at target,(40 miles away). that saddens me because i would much rather leave the revenue to our small town, but savings is the rule at my house!

I was not to crazy about price matching. One it took to long, the cashier was not to happy and at first I felt guilty about get all the things I wanted at one place with out going to 3 different stores. But once I started, each time got easier. I have my regular shopping list for all the items I want, then on another paper I have the prices of each item I want to price match and the store. First, I put up my regular priced items, then I put my price match Items up in groups. Remember in the end u win. With price matching today I saved enough to buy my son a pair of shoes and sneakers at wal-mart. Rude people wont stop this shopper from saving all I can.

I actually went last night and price matched about 10 different items and then I used my coupons afterwards. It was pretty cool when I figured it out that it would have cost me over $85 but I only spent $41 and some change. Totally happy with that!!! Had no problem with my Walmart on price matching & using manufacturer coupons.

I went to one of my three Walmarts last night and that was my first mistake. I went at a different time and used a different cashier then my normal one. The cashier was very rude and said that the store was not going to give me items for free. She then tried to just key in my coupons for 95 cents instead of scanning them for the 1.50 on them since the item was matched for 99 cents. When I asked her to just scan the coupon instead of making up a price to be keyed in she got a manager to the register and he told me that the store would not price match and take coupons. After trying to explain to them their own policies they refused to take the coupons. Since there was a long line behind me I had them cancel the transaction and give me my coupons back. I was so frustrated that I wanted to talk to more managers but with it being the night of Nov. 24th I just left the store.
