Disclaimer: The purpose of my wife sharing this experience is not to say how crappy Walmart is, I Heart The Mart. It is to let you know that even people who are considered “experts” have issues. Walmart like any other company has issues but is a great place to save money and shop. My wife made a comment that 90% have probably had a similar experience, that is probably true. I am also guessing that 95% of your trips are trouble free. We have a tendancy to remember the bad and discard the good. I appreciate and empathize with all of your stories, good and bad. I started this site to make a difference and make the best place to save money and shop even better! Thanks for being a part of I Heart The Mart.
Hi! This is Tiffany from MyLitter a.k.a. Paul’s wife. I wanted to share with you my “lovely” price matching experience last night at our local Walmart. Sorry in advance this will be long. But I am sure about 90% of you could have written this yourself!
First, I have to say we have a GREAT Walmart. The head manager is awesome, and for the most part the cashiers are good. BUT….. there is the cashier from h*#l. This cashier has been there for as long as the store has been there I would say. He is super unfriendly and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have gone through his line I have had a problem with SOMETHING. I swear he makes it happen. I AVOID him at all costs, it just is not worth the frustration.
Last night I was running in to grab a few things quickly with 3 of the kids, my sister and her sweet 4 month old baby. We had 21 items in our cart when we went to check out, so I didn’t go in the fast check out, but had to go to the regular. They had ONE open. This is at 8:45 at night. Then they closed the fast check out lanes. We waited inline for over 15minutes, as we were next in line there was a problem with the payment method for the people in front of us. They called a CSM and no one came. We waited and waited. Then the cashier from h*#l walks over and opens a new lane and motions us over.
AUGH! The last thing I wanted to do was go through his line, but the poor baby had been steadily working himself up for a while and was about ready to go nuts.
Checking out I held the milk back and said I wanted to price match it to CVS. This is how this went:
“I’d like to price match this Oak Farms milk to CVS.”
“Where is your ad?” he asks.
“I don’t have it with me, but your policy says I don’t need it.”
“You have to have the ad.” He says.
“Actually, the price match policy says I don’t have to have it, that you will provide it.” I state calmly.
“No it doesn’t. You have to have the ad.” Cashier says.
“Can you call a CSM over? I don’t want to argue about this.”
“No, and we don’t price match to CVS anyway.” Cashier states.
“Please call (CSM I had seen earlier in the store) over, we can ask him.” I say very calmly although I wanted to strangle him as the baby is crying and we are arguing over $1. At this point I decide I am sick and tired of him pushing me around. It has been this way for years. In the past I would get sick of talking to him and just grab my coupon or pay full price for the product and walk out MAD. Not today. ** I did not ever say anything rude, get loud or ugly to him. I think that it is very important to be confident and calm, and polite.
He slams his light on.
We wait and wait. No CSM. He ends up scanning the milk through and putting it in a bag.
“Wait, I wanted to price match that.” I say surprised he just decided to start ringing it up.
” I told you, we don’t price match to CVS. You are probably trying to do something after store deal or something like that and we don’t give money back.” He says. Now, I know he is trying to say after ECB’s, although he has no idea what he is talking about.
“No it is the advertised price, I will wait for a CSM.”
A CSM that is off duty walks by. He grabs her and says, “this lady is trying to price match this milk to CVS and she has no ad!” The CSM asks how much the milk is, I tell her “$2.99.” She looks at him and says, “o.k. price match it.”
He is FURIOUS. He slams my milk down, and is mumbling under his breath about how I am wrong and and getting away with something. He refuses to talk to me, and wont hand me my receipt, instead he tosses it in one of the bags.
I am fuming. My sister and I go the the Customer Service desk and wait for a CSM. We wait and we wait for over 20 minutes. When he finally gets there I explain the entire situation and how I am sick of this happening with this cashier for over 4 years. He has no idea what the store policies are, or even cares to learn them. I doubt this had any effect but I felt better.
So then I did what I didn’t want to do and called Paul to complain and gripe! He told me not to move he would be up in a minute. We had enough of Walmart at that point and took the kid and groceries to the car. Paul met us in the parking lot and went inside with the CVS ad. I have to say I was a little worried. I am thinking back to that woman that was kicked out of Walmart for life 🙂
Paul walks back and grabs a gallon of milk. He takes it up to the same cashier. “I’d like to price match this to CVS.” Paul says.
Now just repeat my entire experience….. “Where is your ad?” blah blah blah all over again. Like he didn’t just have this SAME transaction happen 5 minutes ago.
Paul calmly but firmly asks the cashier to look at and listen to the Walmart ad that is PLAYING ON THE TV BY HIS REGISTER saying they price match without and ad! He has never seen or heard that before. He price matches Paul’s milk and as Paul is leaving Paul tosses the CVS ad on the counter and tells the cashier, “here is the ad in case someone else needs it.”
I am sorry this was so long. But this is what I got out of it:
Anyway, I want everyone to know that you are not alone! It is frustrating and can be hard. But when you get a good cashier who knows what they are doing and have a great shopping trip it is all worth it!
