Jenny — Walgreens might have a week in which very little is on sale, or you might not need or want the things on sale. And if your register rewards are expiring, you could use them at Walmart instead to buy milk, bread, produce, or other things you might need. Being able to use our Register Rewards at Walmart gives us one more level of flexibility. I haven’t tried it yet. Just thinking of the possibilities. 😀

Competitors’ coupons for dollars/cents or percentage off, buy one get one free, and double- or triple-value coupons

This states that Wal-Mart will NOT accept a competitors coupon. Register Rewards are available at Walgreens only and I believe they say Walgreens on them! I just found this website tonight and was reading through your comments and because my co-workers and I (I work at a Wal-Mart) were just informed and instructed of the new coupon policy, I cannot see how RR will work at Wal-Mart. If they do, please let me know. Thanks!

I think WAL-GREENS are nice to give us register rewards,So therefore we should be thankful & more considerate & show our appreciation, We should use our rewards at the stores that gave them to us….Wal-mart has never gave rewards, nor do they double coupons. They also will not honor the buy1get1 coupon..Thanks Wal-green,Rite-aid,CVS,Kroger,Target .

            Hi there!

THe RR that you recieve from WG are actually catalina’s. And, catalina’s are a manufactuer coupon. This means that RR CAN be used at WM – or any other store that accepts a manufacturer coupon.

I do agree in ‘rollong’ them over if you can but being able to use RR’s anywhere gives us great flexibility. I’m excited!

The new Walmart Coupon Policy prints as the easiest and most user friendly coupon policy I have ever seen. Target, HEB, and others revamped their coupon policies last year and failed to streamline their final product as Walmart has done. I really like the new one page policy and the pictures and brief descriptions Walmart incorporated. Walmart successfully used pictures worth a thousand words. Paul, thanks for the countless hours you spent on the telephone with Walmart.

SO excited to see the new policy! I recently had two cashiers refuse to take my coupons if they were of higher value. I think this will help and I’m immensely glad corporate responded to our concerns! Taking the new policy with me next time I shop for sure.

I haven’t had too many problems. There are, however, some cashiers who make using coupons much easier than others. I am glad that Walmart is trying to be competitive though, since those of us who are using coupons and getting deals are the ones doing most of the shopping these days!

I am so excited about this! I have been very loyal for a long time to Kroger and I am sure that there are some things I will continue to go to Kroger for (Yakisoba noodles w/a q being one…the .50 q makes them .05 at Kroger but my WM has them for .82, so it only takes them down to .32) BUT Wal-Mart is really starting to win me over.

I printed mine copy off and stuck in my binder 🙂 Btw, does anyone know what the corporate policy is regarding matching the Wags RR deals? Depending on the cashier at my WM (and yes, I profile lol), they match the after RR price…and it varies from Mgr to Mgr too.

I think that this policy really means NOTHING. It will be the same as before. Print it and take it with you and the CSM will tell you they never heard of it or you typed it up yourself.
Wal-mart corporate has good intentions but many of their employees refuse to follow the policy or don’t even know what the policy is.
I mean for a while they even had printed on the bottom of the cash register receipts that they take internet print at home coupons; however, there are cashiers that tell you they don’t take internet coupons or as many of them say “coppied coupons”
I know which cashiers to avoid so that helps because some of them would rather stick needles in their eyes then take my coupons.
The overage thing had not been that big of a deal for me. They usually just hit the enter button just to get it off the screen.

Now as far as accepting CATALINA coupons from the grocery store/Walgreens or Target………………I am sure that will be an issue every time with the cashier huting down the CSM and the 2 of them having a long conversation examining my catalina and everyone else in line rolling their eyes. In other words ” a side show!” I may have to aviod that one but Corporates intentions are good.

If you have an iPhone or other internet accessible device you can bring up the policy and show them from their own website what their policy is. It’s harder for them to argue when their own website with their own policy is staring them in the face!

MP-I agree with you. Our Walmart here hates coupons. I tried the RR tonight and they gave me their evil look and said no. I couldn’t print the policy as I was out of ink. (Which is what I was trying to buy with the RR). They have always been rude.

I agree, the coupon policy is a waste of my time and printer ink. The managers in Vegas don’t care about the policy and flat out tell you that they don’t care what it says. They will NOT let a coupon exceed the value of the item. They will markdown the coupon to the item and then turn around and redeem the coupons for full value. Sounds shaddy to me.
Walmart is so irritating to me that I don’t even want to shop there anymore.

Judi…my Wal-mart has it at the registers too and I still got hassled this past weekend with my purchase and my coupons. I had enough of them making up their own rules though and was at check out for over an hour to make them understand how each coupon was to be used and then still went back the next morning and spoke to the manager about how rude the cashier and CSM were. The problem is while the coupon policy is laid out in black and white for the cashiers and CSM’s, they are not trained the right way and therefor all interpret it differently… I had 4 different people tell me 4 different things about the policy and 2 of them (1 was the CSM) didn’t even know what stacking or a catalina was!! GRRR… so frustrating!! I will be buying my groceries at Publix from here on in – Wal-Mart needs to step it up and train, train, train their people!!!

Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.” Whooaaaa! That is hard to believe! So I could take a Walgreen’s RR for $5.00 and buy something for $.50 and get $4.50 back!??? I tried to get cash back the other day, and was told they could apply the overage to other purchases I was making. The policy does say “change may be given OR applied to the cost of the basket purchase” which gives each store a choice of what they are willing to do.

The RR states right on it that coupon value can’t exceed purchase amount. The Walmart catalina section states the terms on the catalina must be complied with. I have no doubt that there will be people that bully their way to success, but it is not consistent with the policy.

We have gained so much with this new policy, let’s not screw it up! They can always change it back if it becomes too much of a hassle.

I had not had any major problems with employees in regard to the coupon policy, but I was glad to see it updated and clarified. However, I Made a WalMart coupon run tonight, went to a WalMart that is a little out of the way. I hardly ever shop there, but I have used coupons there a couple times with no problem. I had about 15 items, some of them were the same items (ex.: 5 gain dryer sheets, 5 purex 3n1 sheets, and 5 misc items) I had a coupon for each item. LONG story short: cashier said i couldn’t use coupons, CSM said she didn’t ‘think’ I could either, Management said I could only use 1 (that’s right, ONE) coupon per transaction. Said that was corporate policy, and yep, out comes the policy… after showing it to her where it states “We accept the following with Customer Service Supervisor/Management approval:
40 or more coupons” ((so how is it corporate policy to only accept ONE coupon per customer if, according to this, you can use up to 40 before it needs a CSM’s approval???)) Then she changed her tune, said it was only one coupon per item, well, i had 15 items and 15 coupons, I was not trying to ‘stack’ coupons. THEN she says, Walmart will only accept ONE coupon for each type of item. (so it didn’t matter how many Gain sheets I bought I could only use 1 coupon (according to her lastest version of the coupon policy)) She would have been more credible and at least more professional if she didn’t keep changing her story. I left with nothing. I asked them repeatedly to void the transaction so the people behind me in line could check out, but the CSM would just stand there and mumble and stare at the coupons, I had to ask her to give them back to me. I was just appalled at the lack of knowledge of CORPORATE policy, and then to be treated like I was trying to scam them. It was just very embarrassing and frustrating and I needed to vent…

i was just using the ‘gain’ as an example. Thats not what I was getting. The coupons I was using did not specify ‘limit of 4 like coupons in same shopping trip” I was just using that as an example instead of saying I got 3 of this, and 4 of that, and 2 of those, and 5 of that other thing and a coupon to go with each item. I have used many P&G coupons (which all state the 4 limit) and I have no problem abiding by that limit. I apologize for not explaining myself more clearly about the items I was trying to purchase.

Your Walmart seems to not know the difference between purchase and transaction. Each item you buy is a purchase….you’re whole order is a transaction. One coupon per purchase means you can’t use more than 1 manufacturer’s coupon per item…….will they ever learn!

I was wondering as I was watching the show yesterday how in the world they were able to buy 100 toothbrushes etc in one shot, when I was looking at my coupons they say 1 coupon per perchase, I thought that meant that I could only buy one tube of toothpaste with only one coupon….looking at it now, hind sight is 20/20 and it makes perfect sense. I had the same experience tonight. I was told I was using coupons illegally and that I was the reason stores were going out of business! The manager told me there was no way that store was EVER, EVER going to give overage. Unfortunately, I hadn’t printed the policy to take with me. Don’t think I’ll be going back to that store anytime soon!

I had a very similar experience only with 4 Gain coupons. I sent my husband out with 4 gain coupons, 2 uncle bens rice coupons and a small list to cover the overage. The cashier marked down the coupon. I took the gain (and policy) back to the store and requested to speak the Manager. He agreed with the statement regarding overage on the new policy, but at first stated tha the coupon read that I could only use 1 coupon per transaction. I showed him the gain coupon with limit 4 and a hot sauce that stated one per transaction. He recanted his statement and gave me the change. 2 trips since, both with difficulties at the register. But at least they are now accepting my coupons. Just with a lot of hesitation and frustration. I try to keep smiling and keep shopping.

I have left a few cart of groceries right at the register and walked out just because of this same issue. It was great that you brought your copy of the policy with you because 9 times out of 10, the cashiers have NO IDEA about what the policy states….ridiculous, huh? I had to use the policy today just to get my 12 cents in overage returned to me……..Doesn’t that suck? You always have to stand up for yourself when couponing at Walmart or anywhere. Happy shopping!

i had a similar situation happen to me last night on a walmart trip. i usually go late at night to avoid large crowds n holding up the line. all the late shift walmart people r usually very cordial. well this one cashier tried to refuse my coupons because the value of the coupon exceeded the cost of the item. n we argued for 2 minutes n then i said nevermind, just remove those items. then i purchased 6 items priced at 1.97 each and the coupons were for $2 off (also on the coupon it said ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE) n she scanned those no problem. then we came to the third item she said i can only purchase ONE of them, not 20 because it said ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE. so after arguing with her what it meant, she proceeded to say that SHE WAS RIGHT because she CAN read and others CANT meaning me and her coworkers. i told her if she is such a good reader, that she needs to read the walmart coupon policy but of course i didnt think to have one handy because i had NEVER had any problems and they didnt have one handy. i spoke with the manager on duty who knew me because i shop at walmart at least 4 times a week. i will be filing a formal complaint on this cashier because not only did she belittle ME, but she belittled her coworkers and the manager.

It says that now they wont accept:
    * Print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase
    * Competitors’ coupons for dollars/cents or percentage off, buy one get one free, and double- or triple-value coupons

Does that mean they wont take the Mission Chips coupon? Walmart was the only store left that WOULD take these coupons around here!!

ALSO, does that mean they wont accept competitors’ coupons that are bogo, or no bogo in general? I know some brands, like Bob Evans, have a b0go coupon just for signing up with them through e-mail, that will suck if we can’t use those there either!

BOGO coupons are accepted….you have to make a purchase in order to get the second item free. It’s the printed totally free coupons like the Mission one they won’t take.

I’m not understanding why people want to use their RR at Walmart? I use them to get free stuff at Walgreens. You can Roll them and tons of free stuff. Why forfiet that for a few items at Walmart? Am I missing something here?

example: Buy Crest toothpaste $3 get $3 RR, roll that $3 the next week. Use the $3 RR for Motrin ($3) and get your $3 RR back. I just don’t think using them at Walmart is using them to their full potential.

I currently have about $150 in RR most of which are from the colgate that I paid $1 for and got $3 RR or the MM motrin. I will keep $30 in RR to roll but will spend the rest at Jewel and now maybe Walmart. This is wonderful news because lets just say I bought 40 toothpaste, paid approximately $40 but received $120 in RR…now I have 40 toothpaste and whatever I buy at Walmart, gifts, clothes, groceries, hell maybe even a TV I am only paying 1/3 of the cost. That is why I am excited. This is a HUGE game changer for me. The overage is just the icing!

Some weeks there are not good RR deals. So it would be nice to have somewhere else to use the RR instead of Walgreens. You could use it on meat and produce which coupons are hard to come back. I had $15 in RR a couple of weeks ago and nothing to roll it to on to. So I ended up with stuff I really did not need. I had spend them before they expired. It’s nice to have another option now.

Yea, good point! I can see doing that if they will expire. But usually I end up rolling it on whatever I can and donating that item and just keep getting RR’s back. But if you in a pinch I can see how that makes sense! 🙂

Well I glad that they are accepting competitor coupons and overage because I have been a extreme couponer for over a year and I don’t really shop at Walmart. I usually give business to Rite Aid, Harris Teeter (they double coupons), and Kroger (they double too). I have had problems with Walmart in the past even with their coupon policy in hand and they use to interupt it all sorts of ways. I have 4 Walmarts in my area and two NEVER take internet printed coupons (even when you have the coupon policy in hand), and calling to see if they have inventory available I get transferred to different departments by the operator and hear the associates lecture me on how they can’t help me and explaining that I was transferred to them by the operator. I may go there but not as often as HT , RA, and Kroger. BUT I do love this website!!!!

I do have a question…. and would like your opinion.

My question is, Who was right? Here is what happened…
Just an hour ago along with other items, I used my FREE Excedrin ( which states up to 5.99) Value today.
I got the 24 ct. Excedrin Migraine that costs 3.12 (since all th 5.47 bottles have mysteriously disappeared the week the promotion began.)
At check out the cashier rolled the coupon value back to 3.12. I asked her why she did not give the total value (up to 5.99) of the coupon. She asked what did I mean, so I explained to her the current policy and that coupon values are not rolled back unless it is a single item purchase in which the total would be negative resulting in them “owing” me money… (which I think I might be wrong about the “change back” portion of their policy, I’m not sure… I didn’t expect to stop by WM today, so I haven’t printed the policy yet, my bad… She said she would have to talk to a Customer manager. I’m not kidding when I say this…
Maggie (my cashier) approached Janine (the CSM) at the Service desk (I was in lane 8 directly in front of the SD.) Janine listened (though she did not look at Maggie or the coupon.) She made a face of absolute horror mixed with disbelief, and said something. Maggie came back to me and said “I’m sorry, she said no.” I walked to the SD and politely (and quietly) asked Janine if she could please come to the register, and (again, I’m not kidding…) In front of EVERY SINGLE customer at the Service desk she said “WE aren’t going to give money back.” I told her I’m not asking for money back, that I’m asking for the total amount of the coupon (up to 5.99) to be applied towards my total purchase.
She exaggerated to me “AND HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOU WORKED HERE?” Loudly, and absolutely disrespectfully. I told her that the CURRENT Coupon policy has nothing to do with me having worked there 3 years ago, and that the policy is new. She told me “Well we’ll just have to send a Manager.” I told her that is fine, and she asked the other CSM at the SD to call for one. Throughout the entire 45 seconds of the conversation, she was loud, and I stayed calm as to not create more of a scene.
I returned to the register and all the registers around me were PACKED with customers staring. I politely told Maggie I would wait, and so she turned off her light, helped the customers behind me move their items to the Weigh Station (self checkout cashier) and came back. She looked nervous, and I told her I was in no way upset with her. So, Haley, the front end manager came up and asked what was happening. I explained everything that happened thus far and Haley asked Maggie take the 3.12 (credit) off, and try it for 5.99. It didn’t work. She asked me to explain the policy again, so I did. So, she had Maggie void the 24 ct. Then she scanned it again, and when the “Valid Coupon/Enter Coupon Amount came on the screen, had Maggie type in 5.99. And IT WORKED.

Again, I did work at Wal-Mart three years ago, however, times have changed, policies and procedures have changed. I am VERY understanding of policies, procedures, and know first-hand that Wal-Mart really does not educate every single employee of the new guidelines, procedures, policies and pretty much leaves Cashiers and CSMs to”fend for themselves.” However, a RUDE CSM makes for a very un-enjoyable shopping trip for any customer.

So, I’m asking… based on your knowledge of the Coupon Policy… who was right?
Janine who said “no”, or was my interpretation of the policy correct? I have used the second promotional offer from Excedrin and when asked the coupon amount the cashier just entered “5.99” since that was on the front of the coupon. I’d love your feedback! And help! Thanks for all you do.
And is it a little crazy that while this mess was going on, I thought “I’m going home and checking I Heart the Mart to see what he thinks!”

      Brooke,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a huge comment! First, I have to say that from what i understand when the coupon says “up to” they only take the price of the item you are purchasing. So they should have only taken the $3.12. They are also are not taking coupons for free items anymore.
Regardless, they treated you very badly. They are very confused themselves about the old coupon policy, let alone corporate tossing a new one at them. They really need a “coupon expert” check out lane.

The new policy states they wont accept “Print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase”. It doesnt say anything about not taking other free coupons, like ones on glossy paper from manufacturer that obviously arent printed. As with all coupon policies, there are still some holes in this one that need to be clarified by Walmart.

CJ- that’s what I read on their policy.
“Walmart does not accept the following coupons:
Print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase
Competitors’ coupons for dollars/cents or percentage off, buy one get one free, and double- or triple-value coupons”
My Free Coupon is not a Print-at-home Internet coupon.

I just set up my printer to my new laptop, so I was able to print the policy, and I went the “extra mile” and printed their PDF formatted policy.
            Thanks for everything Paul.
Without your site and a few others I would never had become a more informed consumer. I also have began to take up for myself when it comes to store policies. I have to abide by rules, why must they not have to do the same? Again, thanks…

If it’s a printed from home coupon no….if it’s a coupon that’s been mailed to you then yes. The policy states no printed at home free coupons will be accepted.

They do not accept INTERNET PRINTED coupons FOR FREE ITEMS(meaning no purchase required to get the item for free), they still accept coupons you get direct from the manufacter or from the weekly inserts. As long as they are not the ones you print from the INTERNET (ie: Mission Chips), you can use the FREE ITEM coupons. I have used Yoplait, Clairol, and Herbal Essences coupons from home-mailings without problems.

If I ever have problems, I will stand at the checkout to wait to speak to the highest manager I need to. (I won’t let he cashier or CSM tell me their manager said, “No.” I ask to speak with that manager myself.)

IMO, you were not right in asking that they give you the full $5.99 valued for the Excedrin coupon. The coupon is only to be redeemed for the sale price of the item. It says up to $5.99-then they fill in the actual amount and take that amount off(the actual sale price of the item). Asking for the full $5.99 value to be applied is not right-nor what the coupon allows.

Yes, I agree….if it has a box or space for the price then the checker or you should write in the price and that’s what should be taken off. If the coupon states $4.99 off (not up to) then $4.99 should be taken off and the difference applied to the rest of the order as stated in the policy.

No, there would be no difference to apply to the rest of the order. The coupon value is for the sale price of the item only. You would not be able to apply the difference to the rest of the order no matter what the policy says(because the policy to allow overage does not apply-there is no overage).

I just got back from walmart and they accepted my coupon for the mission chips. It didn’t scan so she typed it in. I had heard on another board that mission changed the wording on the coupon so I went back and printed it again. Instead of it saying FREE they changed it to $2.99 off any bag of mission chips. So if y’all have one that says FREE try to print it again. I think my chips were $2.18 and I got the overage! YAY!

here’s what it says in their polic re: catalinas

◦(also called “Catalinas”) that are printed at our competitors’ registers, have “Manufacturer Coupon” with specific requirements printed on them (?????), a valid remit address for the manufacturer (check), valid expiration date{check}, and a scannable bar code (check).
say for example this RR i have:
Manufacturer CPN exp 3.19.11 – $10 off yor next store purchase, over the value of the coupon, compliments of irwin naturals, redeemable at walgreens.

Since Walmart has updated the coupon policy, I encourage everyone to Email, Fax and even call Walmart CEO on complimenting the change on policy. Also, please share your horrible experience with Michael Duke. Ask him for his advice on making your future shopping experience smooth as possible avoiding past experience of you and others. I just had to repost this…New update on my previous comment. I took vodreaux’s advice and contacted Mike Duke at corporate. The manager from our Walmart called me today and apologized over and over. He asked how he could make me happy and I told him to just take my coupons next time. (I wish I had told him I wanted an apology from “Dorothy”). He said he was going to post the policy by the registers. Well guess what, I went by there tonight and went to the same little cashier, Penny, who was great each time. She was still a little hesitant to take my coupons, but she called Sam. Sam came up to the register and looked at the coupon and said, “Well did she buy the right item?” I told him it was good on almost anything. He thought for a minute and then told the cashier to go ahead and take them. (They did scan ok) As I was leaving the store, a “friend” told me that Sam was on the phone telling all of the cashiers to make sure they had a copy of the policy by their register. (No Sam, I am not contacting Mr. Duke again). I am so excited now that they actually DO take the RR. I bought ink cartridges and 2 set of curtains for $12.

Yay! I’m so super duper excited about the new coupon policy as my major issue with my local Wal-Mart is that they refused to take my coupons because they were over the item cost. I have to admit I’m kinda crushing on Walmart after this most recent move. Let’s hope it sticks. I can’t help but feel like the other shoe could drop at any moment, though — a Walmart rep pops up to tell us it was a mistake, a hacker, a cocaine-addicted web developer going rogue after a 3 day bender. And I’m worried cashiers and managers will have a field day with the wording in the policy — like telling us we have to buy a “basket” to cover the overage. LOL I’ll try not to be too skeptical and wait to see how things go on my next few trips. And I love the idea about sending a “love” note to corporate! Even if things don’t always go smoothly, kudos for taking steps in the right direction! Now they just need to work on their training and creating a consistent experience for those of us who use coupons.

I stopped at Walmart today & used a $2 RR from Walgreens. The cashier was extremely skeptical in taking it because apparently they’ve all been written up before for taking them. So I spoke with her & two managers & showed them the policy that says that as long as it says “Manufacturers coupon” on it, they are supposed to take it. The manager allowed it to go through (though it did scan on it’s own) & will make sure that the cashier doesn’t get written up for it. I spent probably 5-10 min discussing it with them. They were nice about it, but clearly it was a hassle for all involved – esp since the RR does say “redeemable at Walgreens”.

Most RR, or pretty much all say a certain $$ amount off and are not a specific product coupon. I will not be surprised if they are not taking them for that reason. The thing is that if they would just scan them they would not beep, in my experience and most other peoples. So really in the long run I am not sure what is going to happen with RR. Sorry, not good info I know. This is all new, and working for some and not others so it is frustrating.

From what I understand, no they don’t take in store coupons from competitors. They will price match regular ads, but not the in store coupon price. In regards to how far away they will match coupons, my store will match any ads from cities touching the store where I shop. In another city, they only match ads from stores within 2 miles because they have so many Wal-Marts in that city. I agree that if you work with your specific Wal-Mart, the experience is much easier. They know me as the one who price matches, uses coupons and brings her own reusable bags. If there is an issue, we just call the manager and tell her that her problem child is here. On the other hand, when my youngest started kindergarten and I didn’t have wriggling little ones with me, I have been asked to go to new cashiers to help let them get experience on how to price match, use coupons, etc. I leave the ads at the customer service desk when I’m done with my weekly shopping for all the employees to use. Now the cashiers and I ask each other hey are there any tomatoes on sale anywhere so we all benefit. I have gotten frustrated in the past, but the time I save was worth the effort to get a good relationship at my store.

I love that they now take RRs from the other stores and Catalinas as well. There are times where there is nothing I can match up in a week and I have a load of RRs I need to use before they expire in that week and have to then go in and pay over what I would normally pay for something just to “use” them. Our Walmarts here however have always taken full price of the coupon maybe because I always have something in the cart that it can be applied to.

Well, I had an exciting trip at Walmart yesterday during my lunch break. The cashier checked with a CSM before manually deducting my 2 catalinas/RR (1 from Randall’s, 1 from Walgreens). So, last night I went to a different Wal-Mart to get my chicken and cooking creme deal. I had a $3 off catalina from Randall’s and presented it with new policy in hand. Of course no one had even heard of the new policy but took 15 minutes discussing what to do. Initially they didn’t like that it had a competitor’s name printed on it. When I pointed to the specific example on their policy, they discussed some more. Finally, they denied it because the Randall’s ones won’t scan. (policy states “scannable barcode”.) Oh well, I guess that’s how they can get around it.

I am new to this couponing world and somewhat confused on a few things. I understand that Walmart price matches; I think they have for awhile but I have never tried it. Now since I have been doing the coupons and trying real hard to lower my grocery bill (which is over 1,000$ a month), it hit me that if Walmart price matches then will they match the price from walgreens. More specifically if an item at walgreens is on sale for $3.00 with a RR of $2.00 what price can we get if for the 3$ or the 1$.
    Thanks

I had an AWFUL experience today at walmart. And of course I didn’t bring the coupon policy, but after an HOUR, yes an hour of debate, they finally honored my coupons:
I had 4 $1.50 off breath right coupons for the $0.99 trial size. They told me they didn’t accept coupons on trial sized items!
I had 3 $2.00 off any sized Dial lotion coupons for the trial size $1.99, they wouldn’t take it because it was a trial size.
And I had $3 off gain coupon for the gain dryer sheets for $1.87, they too wouldn’t take it because of the price difference.
But finally I got the manager to ok it and I put my overage towards other things I needed that I didn’t have coupons for.
I am very angry for how rude they were. They refused to show me their coupon policy and made me feel like I was stupid!

I tried using the manufacture’s coupons from the Rite Aid flyer today. I came prepared with the downloaded coupon policy. The cashier wouldn’t honor the coupon, but I didn’t press it because I had done a lot of price matches and there were alot of people in line behind me. I went to customer service and they gave me my money from the coupon. They said that the switch to the new policy was a rough one but they were very nice about it all.

The Walmart(s) I shop at are all doing training on the new policy. I know that when I spoke to Thomas, at the Walmart I went to on Tuesday, he said that stores are pressing for more clarification on the “will give change back” part.

I love the new policy, and I have worked for Target as a GSTL in the past, so I know how avid couponers can push the policy back in your face. I will always take the extra time to wait for a “YES” from management, than have wasted my time clipping, shopping and planning to save so much!!

New update on my previous comment.

I have not had a very pleasant experience at my local Wal-Mart in Rochester, MN. I went on a shopping trip yesterday to Wal-Mart with my coupon policy in hand and had three Walgreen’s RR to use. The cashier excepted one RR and would not take the other two because the cash register beeped. She called over the CSM and the assistant manager who did not have the current coupon policy and questioned where I had gotten mine. When I told them I printed it off the corporate Wal-Mart website, they acted as if I was lying. I was told that the RR could not be used because 1) they did not sell the item that the RR was “compliments of”, 2) that it was for Walgreens (didn’t I know that I was in Wal-Mart?), and 3) the coupon was not for a specific item, what exactly was I trying to use them for? After I tried explaining my logic, and was throughly embarrassed by two very rude employees, I left the store very unsatisfied and without my groceries. Needless to say, I reported this incident to corporate Wal-Mart and was called back by Chuck the local store manager today. He didn’t even have the new coupon policy and had to call me back later when he found it. Once Chuck found the new coupon policy, he told me that they do not except Catalina’s that have “redeemable at Walgreen’s (so they don’t except RR) I questioned where it states this in the policy and how would they except a competitors coupon then. He said they will price match, but if it is not for a specific product or says “redeemable at” another store, they do not take these coupons. I AM BEYOND FRUSTRATED AND DO NOT PLAN ON GOING BACK UNTIL THIS CONFUSION IS SETTLED!
I just do not understand how as a consumer I can be educated about the new coupon policy, but the store manager does not know it even exists.

Jacqui, email Mr. Duke at the above email address. I went through the same experience until I emailed him personally. Boy what a difference their attitudes were the next visit. The CMS headed the other way when she saw. I spefically mentioned her name in my email. I spent 4 $10 RRs that night. Don’t give up, that’s what they want you to do.

Ok, so I had my first offical “bad” experience at Walmart today. Wasnt with the coupon policy, just the cashier. She was very pleasant, unitl I gave her my coupons, then it was like someone flipped a switch and WOW look out! She became very rude and unpleasant. I spoke to a manager and told her about my encounter. She apologized and said she’d speak to the cashier. So on the way home, my son (age 19) who was with me and witnessed her change in attitude. He was actually appauled. He had a thought, I dont know if it would work, but its a thought. For anyone who has had problems with the new coupon policy, before you start your shopping trip, go to customer service and ask to speak with a manager, ask them to look at the printed coupon policy you have, and sign it if their store is compliant with it. They could also put store number on it incase you shop at multiple stores like I do. When you encounter a cashier who is unaware of the policy, pull out the policy signed by that stores manager. Proves you did your homework, and that the policy is ligit!

I tried your idea myself but it FAILED! Before I even tried to use a Walgreen’s RR, I went straight to a CSM. She got the Assistant Manager’s approval, put an “Okay per AM’s name” and signed her name as well. I thought “GREAT”. Then, when I tried to check out with three $3 RR’s, the cashier wouldn’t take them. She left the register to hunt down the CSM & AM, came back 15 minutes later and said I could only use two, and only this one time. Why they write a coupon policy and then not honor it is beyond me. I’d rather pay higher prices at Walgreens than go through this frustration and waste my time.

Toys R Us will only price match the Juvenile Baby Gear (Strollers, Carseats, etc..), of course you have to have the ad with the very specific product pictured, even pattern and print of fabric has to be the same. They will, however take Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupons…. they just do a price adjustment. They also take coupons for Buy Buy Baby, but again, only on baby gear.

After my unfriendly experience at walmart, I went home and emailed that store. Well, yesterday I made a return and that particular CSM was in the service desk. So I politely called her over and graciously reminded her of our situation and handed her my printed policy. She read thru it with wide eyes and mouth agape, and then apologized profusely. So after much butt kissing, we are square, but lo-and-behold! Walmart (local store manager) called me today to find out the story! I relayed the message and he told me he was gone learning all this new information and is just now getting back to passing it around. And promises to get everyone on the same page. I forgot to remind him about the RRs, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. He gave me his # and said if I have another situation I am to call him. This makes me feel very happy. One battle at a time.

    Hi Paul,
I read the new policy differently to EXCLUDE Register Rewards.
Also, so many cashiers insist that the item being purchased matches the picture on the coupon exactly…as I read the policy, I think that section backs that premise/ issue up…wonder what Walmart will do if the coupon reads ANY… ???

This is the part of the policy that stood out to me:

*The following are guidelines and limitations:

    * Item purchased must be identical to the coupon (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc).

Thanks Paul…I think I am a little confused now !

I can confirm, you do not need the ad to price match at Walmart any longer. They have the local ads in every cashiers drawer. I actually have had 2 cashiers tell me about it and show me. I personally find it easier to have the ad in hand anyhow, to be sure I get sizes correct, but helps out greatly when price matching produce from our local Aldis. HTH

The Assistant Manager told me that I cannot use 4 identical coupons in one transaction. I showed her the policy, she said that they could not list every little thing on the policy otherwise it would be too long and that she received a note about that just the other day. I used the $3/1 Gain coupons and when it said limit of 4 coupons I just broke my purchases into various transactions having only 4 Gain each time. I had 16 coupons and ended up with $16 given to me in CASH by Walmart. I had the coupon policy with me to show them that they give cash back from overages. The manager said that the cashier hadn’t had the time to read up on the new policy and that’s why they didn’t know to give overages. I plan to always bring the coupon policy with me so I can show the cashiers…they don’t always have the latest on what’s happening. The mgr. knew what was going on though and had no issues with it. Afterall Walmart doesn’t lose money…they actually gain it. They get the coupon value back plus a handling fee from the manufacturer. LOVE the new policy!

Our Walmart won’t let you use an internet coupon unless it scans – so if the scanner is touchy or your barcode isn’t printed absolutely clearly and the scanner will not read it they will not take it.

Happened to me the other day – so mad I told them “Then I don’t want any of it! I’ll go to Target where they will key in the coupon!” She finally got a manager over there and they got the coupon to scan on the first try! LOL!

This particular item is $2.49 at Walmart and a fellow couponer said they would deduct $1.99 so the final price would be $.50? Is this correct? Just wanted to clarify before I head out to Walmart to try this.

I am also a couponer and a CSM for the company. I feel that the show has raised a level of excitement of couponing. But as far my company goes, there is nothing in the changing any time soon. Walmart make a profit for every coupon they except. So my company is not changing any time soon. The manufactures I feel may change the value of a coupon, but not walmart and their policy. I hope this helps.

Pride in what to do, how to be patient, proud of their coupon customers (cause they don’t understand how HARD us couponers plan their shopping trips). They are just coming around to being joyful. My cashiers all brag about my trips and saving. Keep up the couponing and I will continue to voice the positives of couponers.

There is one little part of the policy that is confusing me. While I can work it out in my head, I prefer to have as much information in my arsenal as possible because my local store is HORRIBLE about accepting coupons.

One section of the policy states that they will accept manufacturer coupons and competitor coupons, but in another section it states only one coupon per item….so, I am assuming then that I cannot use a manufacturer coupon with a competitor coupon for the same item, am I correct??

The last time I used coupons at Wal-Mart, I was called a thief by the cashier. It was when the Nivea $3/1 coupon came out and they were $3 at Wal-Mart. I bought four bottles and used four coupons and paid nothing, and the cashier was very gumpy and mumbling under her breath during my whole transaction and just as she handed me my receipt, she said ‘What a thief’. I think she meant to say that under her breath, but it was just loud enough for me to hear. I didn’t bother saying anything to the local management as I’ve complained in the past and got no result, so this time I emailed corporate and I never got a response back or even an acknowledgement that they received my email. I use coupons at Wal-Mart with reservation and caution now.

For those of you that are lucky enough to have Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in your area, they accept coupons with a smile on their face!! The store is more on the level of a traditional grocery store and their employees are trained as such, however, they all still have that same grumpy demeaner that all Wal-Mart employees seem to have…the ‘I don’t want to be here and I don’t want to help you’ attitude.

The coupon question is a little tricky. They actually have to put the CC in as a price match. This then allows them to also use a MFG coupon. Remember the store coupon must state a specific price for the item. Thanks. Just keep being persistant and nice, it will be worth it when they all conform to our wishes.lol

The only problems with Walgreens is that they are so picky on how many you can use and what you can use them on….

Cub takes expired RR, Walgreens won’t even look at them even if one day beyond date.
Cub treats them like cash vs coupon so you can have more coupons then items that way.

I am loyal to a point , but if they don’t work with Walgreens then I use them somewhere that they do work.

The Walmart policy states that they will price match the before RR price, that being said some managers allow the PM to happen on the after RR price. I would go in budgeting for before RR and bring my ad and see what they match.

Im reading about all the experiences you have had with WalMart and coupons and I dont see how the savings can begin to be worth the stress, aggravation and confusion. Especially with a free coupon. Id rather take my free coupon to a more pleasurable place and still have my free item.

Lynne, I understand where you are coming from but i think that a lot of the things that happen could be prevented. In my opinion it is a mix of people who go in expecting a bad time and react accordingly to people who are stuck in their ways. In the beginning I had some issues, but as I perservered and showed my stores that I really did know my stuff they have all but gone away. That’s why I started this blog, I am not an especially patient person you can ask my 13 year old. i just feel that this is the best place in terms of conveniece, range of products and store saving policies that there is out there. If I can do, it anyone can.

I had a horrible experience at walmart yesterday, and actually emailed the company explaining my experience. And of course, it was an issue over coupons. My Walmart will only accept coupons ( now im guessing, because it never was like this before) for items that look identical on the coupon, even if it states “On any Product”, I tried to use my $2.00 off any dial lotion or bodywash coupon, I even read the fine print to make sure it wasnt excluding travel sizes, and it did not! I found this out at the register, half the items i was purchasing did not look identical to the picture. Even so, the coupon was out of the news paper, and such a small picture you couldnt even read what the ounces were ( in the picture), but the manager kept telling me that she could read it, and it was a 12.5 oz bottle.

Yes, you are right, and i always do say that. Yesterday when I asked the manager to do this, she said ” Oh we cant do that anymore, they are really cracking down on our policy”, she had me stand in line for more than 30 mins looking through the bags, and the register receipt, and the coupons; meanwhile there were 2 people with full carts standing behind me. I called the corporate office, and the lady i spoke to was so nice and pleasant. Just from her validating me, i will probably go back to walmart, probably just a different one.

Did they say they couldn’t price match at all or just some of the deals you were trying to price match? If it was the whole ad, you need to call 1-800-walmart and give them the store number/location and tell them what happened.

I just left Walmart and they wouldn’t accept Walgreens Register Rewards. They told me that they had just had a meeting/training on coupons and they were not to accept them. 🙁 I am so confused. The policy on the website clearly shows that they do not accept in the graphic to the right of the page. What am I missing?

I think I can recall someone in an above comment saying they didn’t. and i’m confused bc alot of people I know have done it. I’m a newbie at couponing and i’m a little confused. thank you all for the great insite on everything. I live in a small town and everyone is really nice. I hope when i take coupons to Walmart i don’t encounter a pms’ing cashier.

To use another store’s coupon the price has to be stated on the coupon. So really you aren’t using a “cents off” coupon as much as price matching. Price match to another store’s sale and use the manufacturer’s coupon to get the best discount.

I hope you can help me understand certain restrictions since it’s been a week and I am still waiting for corporate to call me back. Is there such a thing as a competitor or any coupon for that matter with NO dollar off. I have yet to see a coupon that states Candy $0.50, it has always been $0.50 off 1. In other words I can’t use Target Coupons from their website or BJ’s coupons from their monthly coupon book? This seems strange, it sounds more like an ad than a coupon.

    Thank you =)

    Paul,
I just wanted to let other couponers know the importance of having a coupon policy on hand every time you use your coupons at walmart. Especially now since I think due to the extreme couponing, Walmart could be changing their policy yet again to disallow overage.
This came to my attention only yesterday when I had to argue with a woman from my local walmart’s accounting department. I had several coupons for $1.00 off on $0.97 products and the cashier refused to ring them through because she was worried she would get in trouble. Now I’ve purchased items before in a simlar fashion- actually buying $0.97 body wash with a $2.00 coupon and walking out of the store with product and money in hand without a hassle. This was news to me! So the cashier called the front end manager and the front end manager called the accounting manager who said that “we don’t give money back”. Luckily I had my coupon policy on hand and was able to show her what it said on mine and I told her “Show me your new policy and I’d be happy to follow the rules”. She did not have any new policy on paper- it was only hearsay from corporate. So she called the assistant manager who was finally able to allow my transaction. The assistant manager then informed me that yes, technically I am in the right because walmart has not changed their policy YET. So this is a heads up to everyone- always bring your coupon policy & don’t back down. Until walmart corporate publishes a new policy you are in the right and following the rules and they as well have to follow the rules or you can always take your business to a store that will treat you with some respect as a customer. If all else fails say “show me the policy!”

I had a bad situation today at our local walmart. With new coupon policy. Which I heard about but hadn’t downloaded new copy yet. Anyways they wouldn’t accept any of my printed coupons something about the amount of the product needed to me on each coupon?? That’s impossible. The cashier did accept a few of the print at home coupons then once i was leaving on of the other ladies was just talking to me about them and she said they wasn’t suppose to accept any without the price of the product on them.. is it me or do they just not no what they are talking about!

It sounds like you were trying to use competitor cooupons. Those do require that they have a stated price for the item on the coupon/ad.

LOL Sabine, we share the same title! One difference, and I live in a small town, is that I don’t care if I have a good relationship with Walmart employees. I have had the CSM called, who then called the ass. man. The ass man has flat out refused to look at my coupon policy and ruled, “It is my decision whether or not to ultimately take the coupon and I say NO!” I tell them to void the product then and I will call corp. re: this coupon and refusal of coupon. EVERY SINGLE VISIT this scene happened!!! (I usually went in evening b/c of schedule. Manager already gone home. Once tho ass man called Man at home and still the wrong answer!)

I only wish the people behind me knew the outcome! They were getting frustrated and angry at me, of course. The complaint to corp usually results with a call from the manager. He called the first time, said he would check and call me back. Never heard another word. Problems on next trip, as expected, resulted in void product, (yes, you got it…another) call to corp, and complaint sent to district manager. His assistant documented she called me, but she did NOT! Would have called again but had another trip to Walmart and, you guessed it, problems! Same process but I insisted complaint escalate to regional manager. (This is the call when I learned of the false documentation!) I received a call from the regional manager and she was VERY nice. She talked with store management and discovered my store’s MISUNDERSTANDing of their policy. She called me back – the next day, as promised – and said she taught manager and that I should have NNOOO problems in the future. She was right! I have not had ANY problems at my store since!!!!!!!!!!

True, we don’t have a ‘good relationship’ but, if cashier is unsure, he/she will just call CSM who sees it is me, oks the coupon to be ok and manually entered if needed, questioning my integrity MUCH less!!!!!

Yesterday, oh no, I went to another town’s Walmart! Everything went thru eventually but lady behind me got a little huffy! I think, any store, I will just warn people behind me that I use coupons very legally and ethically so if there is any problem it is with the person at the register and they may want to go to another line, just in case. Transfer the blame off of me. I am going to try it my next trip, which will be in 2 days at the store, again, where they don’t know me.

Sorry to write a book! Print coupon policy AND the price match policy and carry them with you! I needed to persist until my Walmart understood their policies since the next closest Walmart to me is 25 miles! (Gas $$$ cuts into savings!)

    Whew!

It didnt work, she said so I cant do anything, I asked for the manager, Front end came over and repeated the same thing.. What a crock! Is this official Walmart policy? I tried to post this last night, but I don’t think it went through…or maybe it did and I just can’t find it (so sorry if this comes up twice) I went into the local Wal-Mart yesterday to pick up a few items. When I get to the register, I was informed before anything was rung up that policies have changed: You can now only pricematch 4 like items; and you can only use 4 like coupons in one trip. Now, most of my coupons already have the limit of 4 per trip printed on them so that was fine, but I did have a few with no limit. I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this policy change? I had the most recent policy printed out and in hand, but they weren’t budging. They said that it had just gone into effect yesterday. I was just curious if this was true, or if our Wal-Mart is just tired of messing with coupons.

Walmart has the most awesome coupon policy “out there”. My problem is the lack of training they give the associates. Not just cashiers it goes all the way to the assistant management position , he told me they Do Not accept competitors coupons I said you do here is the policy ( and in my Walmart they have little blue signs at every register stating that.) It was hard for him to argue with that. The drama of it all created so much anxiety that I went home for the day. I wish they would not give customers such a hard time checking out I am only putting their policy into practice but they make me feel like I am doing something wrong ! I will not stop shopping at Walmart because they do have the best policy but I make sure it is the LAST stop on my list if you know what I mean.

Made a trip to Walmart last night and went to use the $5.00 off when you purchase ANY three bottles or packages excluding trial sizes. I bought three of the pocket packs of advils, which I purchased last week as well. The coupon “beeped” when it was scanned but it did not deduct the $5.00. I was then told they no longer take coupons that won’t scan. It did scan so the arguement started. I explained to her that I was in last week and purchased the same item and it scanned – the disagreement went from not taking the coupon to telling me I’m not allowed multiple trips for the same item. I purposely walked back through four times purchasing another item that said limit one coupon per purchase. Shouldn’t they have taken the $5 coupon?
