Guest Post: My wife has Walmart issues!

Aug 17 by Paul Ivanovsky 232 Comments

Disclaimer:  The purpose of my wife sharing this experience  is not to say how crappy Walmart is, I Heart The Mart. It is to let you know that even people who are considered “experts” have issues. Walmart like any other company has issues but is a great place to save money and shop. My wife made a comment that 90% have probably had a similar experience, that is probably true. I am also guessing that 95% of your trips are trouble free.  We have a tendancy to remember the bad and discard the good. I appreciate and empathize with all of your stories, good and bad. I started this site to make a difference and make the best place to save money and shop even better! Thanks for being a part of I Heart The Mart.

Hi! This is Tiffany from MyLitter a.k.a. Paul’s wife. I wanted to share with you my “lovely” price matching experience last night at our local Walmart. Sorry in advance this will be long. But I am sure about 90% of you could have written this yourself!

First, I have to say we have a GREAT Walmart. The head manager is awesome, and for the most part the cashiers are good. BUT….. there is the cashier from h*#l. This cashier has been there for as long as the store has been there I would say. He is super unfriendly and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have gone through his line I have had a problem with SOMETHING. I swear he makes it happen. I AVOID him at all costs, it just is not worth the frustration.

Last night I was running in to grab a few things quickly with 3 of the kids, my sister and her sweet 4 month old baby. We had 21 items in our cart when we went to check out, so I didn’t go in the fast check out, but had to go to the regular. They had ONE open. This is at 8:45 at night. Then they closed the fast check out lanes. We waited inline for over 15minutes, as we were next in line there was a problem with the payment method for the people in front of us. They called a CSM and no one came. We waited and waited. Then the cashier from h*#l walks over and opens a new lane and motions us over.

AUGH! The last thing I wanted to do was go through his line, but the poor baby had been steadily working himself up for a while and was about ready to go nuts.

Checking out I held the milk back and said I wanted to price match it to CVS. This is how this went:

“I’d like to price match this Oak Farms milk to CVS.”

“Where is your ad?” he asks.

“I don’t have it with me, but your policy says I don’t need it.”

“You have to have the ad.” He says.

“Actually, the price match policy says I don’t have to have it, that you will provide it.” I state calmly.

“No it doesn’t. You have to have the ad.” Cashier says.

“Can you call a CSM over? I don’t want to argue about this.”

“No, and we don’t price match to CVS anyway.” Cashier states.

“Please call (CSM I had seen earlier in the store) over, we can ask him.” I say very calmly although I wanted to strangle him as the baby is crying and we are arguing over $1. At this point I decide I am sick and tired of him pushing me around. It has been this way for years. In the past I would get sick of talking to him and just grab my coupon or pay full price for the product and walk out MAD. Not today. ** I did not ever say anything rude, get loud or ugly to him. I think that it is very important to be confident and calm, and polite.

He slams his light on.

We wait and wait. No CSM. He ends up scanning the milk through and putting it in a bag.

“Wait, I wanted to price match that.” I say surprised he just decided to start ringing it up.

” I told you, we don’t price match to CVS. You are probably trying to do something after store deal or something like that and we don’t give money back.” He says. Now, I know he is trying to say after ECB’s, although he has no idea what he is talking about.

“No it is the advertised price, I will wait for a CSM.”

A CSM that is off duty walks by. He grabs her and says, “this lady is trying to price match this milk to CVS and she has no ad!” The CSM asks how much the milk is, I tell her “$2.99.” She looks at him and says, “o.k. price match it.”

He is FURIOUS. He slams my milk down, and is mumbling under his breath about how I am wrong and and getting away with something. He refuses to talk to me, and wont hand me my receipt, instead he tosses it in one of the bags.

I am fuming. My sister and I go the the Customer Service desk and wait for a CSM. We wait and we wait for over 20 minutes. When he finally gets there I explain the entire situation and how I am sick of this happening with this cashier for over 4 years. He has no idea what the store policies are, or even cares to learn them. I doubt this had any effect but I felt better.

So then I did what I didn’t want to do and called Paul to complain and gripe! He told me not to move he would be up in a minute. We had enough of Walmart at that point and took the kid and groceries to the car. Paul met us in the parking lot and went inside with the CVS ad. I have to say I was a little worried. I am thinking back to that woman that was kicked out of Walmart for life 🙂

Paul walks back and grabs a gallon of milk. He takes it up to the same cashier. “I’d like to price match this to CVS.” Paul says.

Now just repeat my entire experience….. “Where is your ad?” blah blah blah all over again. Like he didn’t just have this SAME transaction happen 5 minutes ago.

Paul calmly but firmly asks the cashier to look at and listen to the Walmart ad that is PLAYING ON THE TV BY HIS REGISTER saying they price match without and ad! He has never seen or heard that before. He price matches Paul’s milk and as Paul is leaving Paul tosses the CVS ad on the counter and tells the cashier, “here is the ad in case someone else needs it.”

I am sorry this was so long. But this is what I got out of it:

  • ALWAYS have the policy with you. Duh, I know this. Why I didn’t I don’t know!
  • Be polite but stand firm.
  • Ask for a CSM if you need to.
  • Make sure that YOU are correct in what you are wanting to do.
  • Call Walmart corporate if you have to, from Walmart. 1-800-walmart.
  • Call and complain to your husband and have him come up and help you! Just kidding, kinda!

Anyway, I want everyone to know that you are not alone! It is frustrating and can be hard. But when you get a good cashier who knows what they are doing and have a great shopping trip it is all worth it!

I tried to price match some things the other day without the ad, and the lady said I had to have the ad. When I showed her the ad match policy, where it said you are not required to have the ad with you, she called over the manager on duty. He claimed that they don’t go by walmart.com policies. I mean really now..? Walmart does not go by the policies on Walmart.com…does that make any sense?!?

That is true. I was told at my local Walmart, that 1/ they don’t price match their own online prices (which I will tell you right now seems to be the common thing in my area since there are tons of places that don’t around here) and 2/ Walmart will not price match ANY food, drink or edible item from anywhere…it does not matter…I did speak to several managers, CSMs and other people, and I guess my local Walmart just doesn’t do it at all…so no price matches for any of us at my store 🙁

They pricematch all meat and produce, the kicker is that it has to be exactly the same item. There are hundreds of cuts of meat so it is tricky to find price matches sometimes.

I went into my Walmart and PMd chicken leg quarters and I had no problem. I had printed out the pages from the competitors’ flyers just so I could remember exactly what I was getting. It was their store brand meat and I got chicken for .88/lb., instead of $1.88 lb.! When I got to the checkout, the little girl didnt know how to ring it up so she just rang up .88 5 times. My pkg was actually a little over 5 lb, so I got even a little better deal. I also PMd from more than one store that day; no problem. I got Hamburger/Tuna Helper 10 for $10, also Chef Boyardee stuff 10 for $10. Price matching worked wonders for me that day! Im praying it will continue!

Hopefully if you complain enough, that guy will get fired! I hate it when employees don’t know their own company policies. Or maybe they just don’t like the policy so they lie so you don’t get the deal.

Omg….I feel your pain! I had a screaming 1 year old and had a list of price matches…and I forgot my ads….figured no biggie…you don’t need them (I like to have them anyway to save me the headache). So…..big surprise, the cashier insists that I have to have the add…I tell her no, it is in your policy. She holds firm and I ask for a CSM…he quickly backs her up and says that you do have to have the ad. I say, I can promise you that your policy state I do not have to have it. He finally says in a snit to just go ahead and do it this time. I could have left itat that but it made me feel like I was doing something wrong so I said, thank you but I PROMISE you that you don’t have to have it, please go check your policy. To my surprise a couple minutes later he returns and apologizes and tells the cashier I was right! I was floored…an employee actually took the time to look up the policy! And I agree with you…have that policy, now I make sure I have it! lol

I am so tired of this as well….My problem is with Target..A few weeks ago I went in with coupons in hand, no kids (husband told me to take a break, so he watched them) I had a lot of coupons but I will tell you about just one incident at the register..I had a coupon for $1.00 off any hanes product target coupon, plus there was a .75 cent peelie on the package the Hanes tshirts were on sale for $4.00 . I was in target for about 2 hours , I had about 15 coupons and I also decided to buy a rio dvd and odds and ends. I got to the register and the cashier started scanning my coupons the coupon for the hanes came up the peelie and the register beeped , he tossed the coupon at me and said very rude WE CANT TAKE THIS..I said it was the peelie off the package he said do yo uwant to speak with a manager I said yes. the manager came over and said whats the problem, I explained the problem to her and SHE SHRUGGED HER SHOULDERS AND SAID I DONT KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU , BTW SHE CUT ME OFF WHEN I WAS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS TO HER AND SHE WALKED AWAY. i STOOD THERE IN SHOCK. I left my cart and left crying. I spend so much money in Target and this is the second time this has happened to me leaving Target crying. I called my husband and he said go to another store. So I did I drove across the street and shopped there. I came home and ripped all of my Target coupons up and I will never go in there again. I emailed there office and recieved an email thats said We are sorry for your inconvience. Thats all it said. I dont want nothing from them I just wanted them to know how terrible my shopping experience went.

I hate Target! When I registered for my wedding at Target in May of 2007, I said, “I am getting married in Texas, driving to Virginia for a reception, and immediately going to school in Idaho. It’s really important that I am able to take back EVERYTHING ANYONE gets me from Target, so I can get gift cards and rebuy it when I get to Idaho. I am driving a tiny Toyota pick up truck and we can’t fit very much in it while driving 5,000 miles across the country..” She assures me, promises me they will take everything back. Their return policy changed 3 days before my wedding, and it was a living, horrible nightmare trying to return things to their store without receipts. I hate that store. I hate them so much! Ugh!

I will never go to Target again!!! Three years ago, I took my wedding pictures to be developed (one hours process). They lost my pictures!!! (How do you lose pictures when they never leave the store??) No one seemed to care. I wrote letters, fussed, and complained!! All they could say, was sorry for my loss!! I haven’t been back, and I never will! The people were very rude!!

I completely agree, Target has by far the worst customer expirence when using coupons. Before I started couponing I would occasionally go to Target because it was way less crowded than Walmart – I think I know why now. I called corporate after 2 of my 3 couponing trips before just giving up on Target. The most common problem I had at Target was both the cashier and manger would just go by the picture on the coupon and not the actual description of the acceptable products. I pretty sure they can read but they just don’t care.

Maybe if enough us complain it will make a difference and we’ll all have another option to save money.

Girls, let me tell you…I was a target Junkie, (there at least 3x+ a week). I was fed up. I have not been back since Dec. 30th 2010. The customer service in Springfield Ohio, and on the phone ridiculous, (except my cashiers, I do miss them). Target maes it sooo hard to complain. I don’t even want anything, I just wanted 1 policy, and somebody who knows what they are talking about.
My 1st big problem was 8/31/2010 (anyone who has been couponing knows about the target giftcard glitch) I bought to stayfree pads, had a BOGO and $1 off for the 1 I was not getting free. So I would have paid $2.99, and got a $5 gift card. I was told I could not use the BOGO at all, and they could only take off .32 for the $1 coupon. Really? Tried customer service to no avail.
I only remember the dates because my coupons were expiring. #2 I will NEVER go back. My cashier Erica, wonderful as usual, tells me they are not allowing them to accept black and white printable coupons any longer. i ask her to please call the manager…Kellie whom NEVER looks at me Period! She tells Erica, that the coupons were copies! The nerve! I said Mam…Mam…Kellie, you can refuse to accept my coupons, but you will not call me a thief. I bought nothing, she said nothing. I was shaking coupons in hand, almost in tears, that is fraud, and I would never do that. I put my head on straight, and think hmm, I was so upset I did not show her each printable coupon has its own personal id # even if the coupon is for identical items. I decided I would cal her and tell her. She must have known it was me, I called 2x, I was very polite to the operator, and was disconnected the 1st time, and put on hold forever, with no answer. Sorry so long but come on target!!! P.s. Can anyone else find where to email them b/c I never have…they do not care. Walmart is gaining more customers!

    Tiffany,
We usually have issues with Walmart too, but yesterday had the most AWESOME cashier. She joked with us and twice even mentioned price matches I didn’t know about. Hey you know that oil is only 1.99 down the street. I was happy dancing out the store while I am usually fuming! When she asked me how I did it, I gave her your website. Thanks for everythign you do!

why are their cashiers not informed? I just dont understand. I get this same hassel any time i go to the Chico, Ca store. But if I drive an extra 20 minutes to Oroville, Ca to walmart- its an amazing experience each time. Personally I blame the store managers- if they arent educating their employees… sheesh

I agree, Amber. I think the managers are to blame. I lived in East Texas a few years ago, and every Walmart in the area- Tyler, Longview, Gilmer, Mt Pleasant, even the Dallas area- each store had the weekly ads from the competition hanging at every register. In Utah now, NO store has ads at the registers. A few stores will have them on a board at customer service, but not all stores.

Walmart should send a message to every store that customer complaints will not be tolerated. It will be interesting to see how long this double coupon stuff lasts.

That’s funny. I was reading another women’s blog on price matching and coupons at walmart, and she said to “profile” your cashiers. She was definitely right. A couple weeks ago, i priced matched for the first time – no problems…cashier was super patient about it. this last week… o boy… out of 4 prices matches i got 1! the cashier nitpicked about EVERYTHING! Not the first time i’ve heard about walmart being less than policy friendly… they should print them and tape them to their registers!

Actually they used to have them all in the entry way in those glass advertising cases but they don’t do that anymore….GEEE I WONDER WHY??? I have never been a huge fan of Wal-Mart to be honest, and hearing these stories just adds fuel to the fire, don’t get me wrong I shop there but only when I know that its worth my time! Maybe its just Ohio but I have yet to find a Wal-Mat that I am even remotely happy with. The shelves are ALWAYS bare and the cashiers are SLOW!!! Keep in mind I live 20 minutes from 5 different Wal-Mart stores all with the same result. Tiffany’s experience is an every trip experience where I am at. Trust me I do sympathize!!

I was just saying the very same thing yesterday after a trip to my local Walmart! I actually had a very pleasant experience with double coupons and an unusually helpful/friendly manager was guiding my cashier. But we had an issue with whether overage was to be given if it resulted from a doubled coupon..she insisted that they weren’t supposed to give overage so the way she was saying it lead me to believe she meant no overage is given at all. I usually have their coupon policy with me but had changed to a new coupon binder so of course there I was without it. She kindly went to print one out for me though trying to prove that they don’t give overage. I read it off to her where it states that they do in fact give overage as cash or applied to the basket purchase..she then proclaimed that she “meant” they aren’t allowed to give overage if it results from a doubled coupon. I’m still not convinced of this but I didn’t argue since it’s not in the official coupon policy yet and I for one and I’m sure you’ll all agree, none of us, want to ruin a very good thing. My complaint is this–why does all of my Charleston SC area Walmart stores have a very nice 3 ring binder with all the current local competitor ads in it at each register BUT they do NOT have their own coupon policy or their price match guarantee in it!!??? The binders they use are even those that have a clear front and back pocket so why can they not just insert the coupon policy into the front cover and the price match guarantee into the back cover??!!! I truly wonder sometimes how these managers get promoted because they certainly are not ‘managing’ anything. But I’m not just whining..I have a plan! I’m going to buy one of those same binders they use, fill it with all the local ads and then place the coupon policy and price match guarantee in it as I specified above and then take one to each of my local stores and present it to the manager. I really hope it gets my point across in a firm but polite way.

The walmart in my area (TN) you MUST have your ad with you. No matter how many times I have explained that their policy AND tv ads say no ad needed they force you to have the ad or the cashier does not scan it. We avoid walmart at all costs unless you guys post a deal an insanely good deal. I’d like to know why they insist the ad isn’t needed, but still have stores that either behind, or know very little about their store policy. My mom is the manager of walmart and it’s so delightful shopping there, minus the drive with high gas prices of course, they have ads at the register for you!

Sorry about your bad experience, hopefully walmart will start training their cashiers again.

Sheila, we must live close together because I also avoid the Wallisville Walmart at ALL COSTS and drive farther to the I10 Walmart! The Wallisville store is horrible, with mostly rude cashiers & even CSMs. There are a few that are okay but to top it off the store is way over crowded and you stand in line for 15+ minutes EVERY time. I hate going in there. I10 Walmart is so much better & I told the store manager that last week! I can’t wait til they open the new part of the store!

It is almost ready….can’t wait either. Once the meat and produce are in….we are done with the Wallisville store. I have only had one small problem with the I-10 store. We went the other day and were price matching and had a couple Kroger catalinas. The cashier, who btw, was a Sales associate and not full time cashier, did not know how to price match or accept the Kroger catalina. She called someone over to help her and everything went great. Now my issue was not so much with the cashier as it was management throwing the Sales Associate to the wolves per say. Why not train them fully? Walmart is a muti-billion dollar corporation…..training has to improve. Also, we live right here in Sterling Green off the Beltway.

Strange you have that happen at that store, I live in Highlands but use the Belteway 8/Wallisville store in order to PM to Joe Vs and Foodfair items. Never had a big hassle but I practice choosing 1)Youngest Cashier or 2)Seasoned Veteran so I can expect a 50% chance of getting someone who 1)Could care less about price and will take my word for it as they learn to do the pricematching on my time or 2)Someone who knows I have my ads and the policy and will use them

In other words I stack the deck in my favor, hope this helps
Example – I got 10 Cream of Mushroom and 10 Cream of Chicken soup to restock PM was to Walgreens for .79 and I used MFG coupons to bring the price to .59 – the newbie cashier didn’t know HOW to enter the PM so I waited while someone came over to teach her and then comiserated with her having to enter the same transaction 20 times all while texting my daughter while waitng

There were about 15 other price match items and it wasn’t a short checkout but she was a whiz at entering them when we got through it and was proud of the fact that she learned something new, I was happy though weary of waiting so everybody won

Wow! what a butt head! I recently went in for my 1st ever couponing experience and had aseperate basket of price matches. Luckly I had a CSM that was my cashier and he did the whole basket with no ads needed. I had the ads just in case but I was relieved as I have a sharp tongue and for some reason things come out of my mouth before I can think sometimes lol! I think that that cashier you had would have felt the wrath of April just for slamming on the light and then got it again mumbling under his breath and then I would have called corporate as well.
**Disclaimer, not promoting violence of the tongue at all in any circumstance**

Glad that everything worked out though. What a butthead!

Oddly enough, I almost always have problems with Walmart cashiers and price matching. I don’t understand why they bother to proudly boast about not having to have the ad and then the cashier insists on having it? Walmart really needs to get their act together…..all the coupon policies in the world can’t make a store better if they don’t properly train their employees!

Oh boy, go figure, maybe the cashiers at Walmart are worried about their profit sharing!!!! hahaha this really sucks. I’m glad you did what you had to do. Maybe next time you should video or voice record the nasty cashier!!!!!

Yeah, video or record them. Thats not illegal or anything!!!!! Want to know why walmart cashiers are “Grump” ?! because we have to deal w. asshole customers all day, who treat you like you are lower than them! I coupon and I am customer service at my store. I at least have respect for cashiers!

I have thought of audio recording my checkout experiences. BTW Shelby, it is not illegal! I was ALWAYS being treated as a thief! Problems re: PM and Qs. Every single visit I would have to call corporate about something. (I live in a small town with Walmart, Walgreens and a small town grocery store.) I knew many other couponers were having troubles, too, so let’s just get this right! Forget assistant managers, they know their policies the same as the cashiers! Corp would take my complaint/problem then send to store manager. Manager called, said he would check on it, never heard from again. Next shopping trip had problems. Skip sending complaint to manager…. went to district manager. No word so I called corp to check on status. They said it was documented in company system that they called me and issue resolved!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next level, regional manager. She called and was very interested in issues I was having at her region’s store. She PROMISED to call me back by the end of the following day. SHE DID!!! This whole process had many other lateral calls, getting nowhere. These frustrations went on for a couple of months. Claws would come out on CSM’s when they saw me walk in the door. Now they may want to pull them out, but they don’t. I am given ABSOLUTELY no hassles at my Walmart anymore, just as the regional manager promised! Sorry, but I think I have PTSD from the experiences at Walmart.

The point????? Persistence! If you are like me (then I feel sorry for you), you know the PM and Q policies like the back of your hand.

Tip for price matching……….. write the matched price on the product with a sharpie marker!!!! I was missing a PM or two every trip until I started doing this! Works great and the cashiers seem to appreciate it – less voiding – because they ask me when they see writing! Or is it the alternative to pulling out their sharp little claws?

It kinda is! You need permission to tape a person and without it they can take you to court! Just like when customers ask for your name and your full name. I dont have to give you my full name, PRIVACY ! Let me tape you w.out your permission and see how you feel!

I had the SAME thing happen to me at Walmart in Katy. The girl refused to let me use the $1 off Tide for the trial size at .97 cents because she said it wouldn’t go through and when the coupon was printed they meant for us to get the bigger one. The Manager came over and said “it won’t go through so I can’t use it” at that time, I was unaware of the overage and it would do that so they needed to just hit enter when it asked it if were ok. I was in the Walmart by my house (Cypress) and I told the cashier it was not going through due to the overage and she allowed it to go through. They clearly need to train their employee’s better!

Target did the same thing to me on the Tide and the Cascade. Hate the CSM at the Highway 6 and 59 store. Beware: Profile the cashiers. I went to the Walmart on 59 and West Airport. I got a cashier who acted like I was stealing from the store. I asked him to PM on item and he asked for the ad. I gave it to him and he spent 2 min reading it. Then I gave him the coupons for it and he wouldn’t take it. He said you can’t PM and use coupons. I told him to call CSM. She comes over and called someone else bc she didn’t know. Another guy comes over and says of course you can. Then the cashier said that there was alot of coupons. I said it’s not but it doesn’t matter. I had 12 coupons and had over 50 items and spend over $100. The initial CSM goes, ” YOu still my best cashier, no matter what NOBODY says.” How RUDE!!!!
Got p’o at WM for a while started shopping at Target and they are even worse!!! Gosh.. so tired of the coupons nazis.

The very same thing happened to me recently. I wanted to price match a b1g1 free item and use a b1g1 free coupon. I had the cashier call a CSM who then called their manager, who then called the head manager of the store!..NOT ONE MANAGER knew the official policy which states that you can in fact price match AND use a coupon on it, even b1g1 free coupons with b1g1 free sales. The head manager, who was initially very rude, actually apologized after finally getting a printout of the coupon and price match policy! I was very surprised I got a public apology on the spot! So there are some good managers out there, just too darn few and far between. And I am right there with you about the coupon nazis! Another quick story about that subject–actually had a cashier hold my legitimately printed internet coupons up to the light proclaiming that they were ‘fraudulent’ and ‘copied’!!! I politely informed her that they were legitimate prints and I would never copy coupons. But she proceeded to loudly claim that they were fraudulent and even called over a CSM!!! My jaw was on the floor by then. I told her that she was the rudest person I had ever encountered and that I would be reporting her to corporate and that she should count her lucky stars that I didn’t intend to file a police report for her public slander against me. She then quickly changed her tune.

I actually work at Walmart and was a cashier for about 3 years. In our store there are flags at all the registers about not needing an an, thankfully most of our cashiers don’t give grief with customers price matching without an ad. As for $1 coupons on .97c items, the register will scan the coupon 99% of the time, and even if it’s an overage, the company still gets that money back. It is actually an extra saving for the customer to get $1 off a .97c item. It used to be you couldn’t use a Kroger or Target coupon in Walmart, but now, we can just price override the item to give the coupon amount off.

If only this was all done company wide you wouldn’t have so many complaints.

I’m glad you brought that up Cyndi. I’m the administrator of a couponing group on FB and many of the members have been able to use competitor coupons for cents/dollars off with no problems at all, even though the new coupon policy states that Walmart will only accept competitor coupons for “A specific item for a specified price, for example, $2.99”. I haven’t ever personally tried to use any competitor’s cents/dollars off coupons. It seems that this is another one of those issues where it’s just up to each store’s manager..which is really annoying. I wish Walmart would get everyone on the same page.

They did that to me with a trial size Degree deoderant. The coupon clearly said any size but because there was a picture of a regular size deoderant on there they wouldn’t take it. And yet at the other Walmart in town we use our 1.00 off Cascade on the trial size packs with no problems.

I live in Arkansas so you’d think being the home state of Wal-mart they would have more pride in learning their own polices but yet we still have the same issues here as every where else. A few years ago our Wal-marts use to keep the sales ads of local competitors attached to a ring that was then attached to their cash register. What happened to that?! That was great and I think that is what needed if they are they concerned about people having the ads with them or “getting away with something”.

I had an experience like that at a kroger. I had something ring up wrong and was trying to get my money back because their policy is that if it rings wrong, it’s free. The store assistant manager was as rude as could be. Pretended not to see the correct price when he went to check. Treated me like I was the scum of the earth and was trying to pull something over on him. He gave me my money back but I was so upset from the ordeal I got outside and started crying. I met up with my husband, who had been shopping in a different store in the strip mall. He went in and straightened out the manager real good. But ever since that day, if I’m treated badly, I dish it right back out. I’m not talking standard rudeness. I get plenty of over the top insulting cashiers in my area. One insisted that it was my fault that she did something wrong since I should have been standing over her shoulder correcting her instead of making sure my kids weren’t climbing out of the cart. I suggested that she take a remedial reading course so she could figure out how to read her store’s ad correctly. Another cashier insisted that when I was buying an item on sale 2 for $8 that she could only take off 2.01 because the register rang the first one at 5.99 and the second one at 2.01. She called me names and wouldn’t hear out my disagreement so I told her that she’s the only cashier I had ever dealt with was forbidden from doing basic math and I was curious as to whether she was a high school drop out.

I don’t like being mean. I hate it. But I’ve found that throwing out an insult to someone who has personally insulted me feels a lot better than just taking it and walking away. General rudeness

I always stand my ground. When I was still having the problems every shopping trip, my 12 y/o dghtr would go to read magazines because she was embarrassed….again. That’s what we mothers are supposed to do, right??

If they had an issue with a PM or Q, I would tell them to void those items and end up in a pointless discussion with the assistant manager.

Glad I am not the only one that has been brought to tears by Walmart! I will have to tell my kiddo that I am not the only one!

When I go to Wal-Mart with them and I have an issue, my children will just stop and listen to what I have to say; believe me I choose my words carefully because of this. I most definitely do not leave in tears, that is the worst thing I could do. This shows them your defeated! Good job for standing your ground!

I am also glad to hear that I am not the only person that has to argue every single time I check out with coupons and price matching at Walmart. I think the CSM’s are starting to recognize me now as he “coupon lady”, so at least that is getting better, but I always have a cashier who won’t take a coupon, or insists that I am stealing from the store due to the Cascade of Tide $1 off coupons when I use them on the trial and single load packages. I have shown the Walmart coupons policy numerous times, AND went to the Customer Service Counter and found out that they had the old policy and were unaware that the policy had been updated in March. The funny thing is, even with the hassle at check out, I continue to heart the mart!

If Walmart were not the cheapest place to shop in my area I would NOT shop them EVER. I had a couple of the new bar code coupons from Redplum and the cashier and CSM loudly told me that I was scamming them with a counterfeit coupon. I was so embarrassed and of course the store manager can never be found when something like this happens. But when he is called on the phoen he promises this will never happen again……….until the next time. I hate Walmart at this point and yes I am sure I will be the lady who gets kicked out for life

This was like reading something I could have written about a certain Kroger store that I always have problems with. It’s always coupons and always that store. I can go to the other one in my town and do most of the time because of the issues. I never ever have a problem with the other one. Once in a while I run into the BAD one because it’s closer and I get my perscriptions there. It never fails I come home wanting to strangle (anything I can get my hands on) the store clerk. I have complained to the manager (which in one case it was the mgr I had issues with) and to corporate. It still is the BAD one!

She finally got tired of us doing it and told my husband one day “I am not ringing you up. I do not think it is right that we are paying you to buy this” and she didn’t ring him up. My husband of course didn’t say anything to her. I called right up there and demanded the store manager. A measly little person on call tried to talk to me, I demanded for the manager….Never got him. I went to a Walmart in South Florida (Cooper City) to get an all you magazine and to use my buy this get that coupon that had no size restriction. The cashier told me I had to pay for the full size item and get the travel size one free. I told her simply, no, the coupon does not state that. The travel item was the required item to get the full size free. Then she told me that I couldn’t use it because it did not match the pictures. I then explained how that couldn’t be true because it only showed the spray when the coupon clearly stated, spray, bodywash or deoderant. Then she called the CSM over who told me I couldnt use the coupon because it said max 5.31 and I was only spending around 4.00 on both items. Well……..let me tell you. I told them that they needed to be trained on coupon language and reading comprehension and left the store, contacted customer service (who never responded) and let everyone I know how ridiculously inept their employees are at that Walmart. There was no need to make me feel like a criminal and hold me at the register for nearly half an hour during the day as tons of people watched.

Good customer service will bring a company good publicity, especially amongst couponers. Bad customer service will bring a company shame.

Manager called me, I explained the situation and told him that he could make it up to me by sending me a gift card. We shall see what he sends in the mail, should be here this week. His employees refused to PM and take a coupon for any items as they were already discounted. I had a copy of both policies and the Rite Aid ad to pm and they still refused.

I had a problem this week with a new cashier over the $1/1 Tide for the trial packet. She called over a CSM that told her that they could not take it unless they marked the product up to $1. I told her the “new” coupon policy allowed it and she informed me that she knew the coupon policy. I asked when they changed the new policy back to the old policy and she said that it had always been policy and had never changed. I told her it had changed. She finally said that she could call me a manager if I would like and of course I said please do. She left and in a few minutes instead of a manager coming over, she came back and told the cashier in a really rude way to “just do it”… I left the store because I was in a hurry for an appointment, but I called the manager back and complained about the rudeness of his employees. I am sure nothing will change though… 🙁

I tried to PM to Rite Aid yesterday and I had my ad with me and when I showed the cashier she ripped out the piece of the ad, saying she needed it for proof. I told her please dont because I dont even need to have the ad with me, let alone her to have a piece, but she insisted I DO need the ad. I argued back and forth, but she gave me the price,. But now I want to goback and PM again, and I dont have the ad to bring with me. (I know I dont need it, but they dont seem to!)

Good for you, I too am fed up with Walmart a lot of the time, I have a few cashiers that are great and others that are awful – I was there 2 days ago I had my 14 month old and my 10 year old sons with me and I had purchased several items – including 2 pocket packs of the Advil and had the 5 off on 2 coupon – it didn’t scan and I said I had purchased the items – the cashier said he needed to call a CSM, the CSM came over after 5 minutes (meanwhile my 14 month old has had it crying and my oldest is whining and the guy behind in line is complaining about how I’m one of those people and he only has 1 item – so very frustrating) and said that they could honor the coupon for 3.68 the price of both the items, I said not according to your coupon policy I should recieve 5 but said I’m not gonna argue because at that point I just wanted to leave, then to top it off I had a trail size Tide for 97 cents and the cashier had already rung up the 1 off any size tide and he said oh I can’t give you 1 for the tide and he removed the coupon and re-rang for 97 cents – WOW talk about insult to injury – I was ready to scream – UGH some days I really don’t heart the mart

My question is this- how is it that you can price match the different brands of milk? I understand price matching things like Skippy peanut butter but how can you price match the different brands when it says “Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)”?

Walmart carries the Oak Farms brand of milk. It’s the same brand and size. Wm carries it for around $5 regular price.

And CVS carries “local” milk brands. For example a big brand in my area is United so that is the one on sale in my ad this week. Walmart also carries it so I will be price matching as well! Since our store started the double coupons the cashiers have been as sweet as syrup! It’s AMAZING!!

Walmart will match an off brand with an off brand even if it’s not the same off brand…does that make sense? As long as the item is not brand specific and the size/products are the same, they will price match. Case in point, Walgreens had some off brand pencils really cheap when we were buying school supplies, and because WM had a pack of (different)off brand pencils that had the same amount of pencils in the pack, they matched it. So, they will match milk, eggs, etc as long as they are not brand specific. I’m tired…I hope this makes some sense…

My understanding is Walmart will substitute the GV brand item for another ‘store brand’ item. Like when Kroger has 1% milk for 2.99, walmart will price match the GV 1% milk for 2.99. My store is great for price matching. I’m sorry everyone is having so much trouble, I love WM!

I tried to use the smartsource coupon for B1G1 on the Johnsonville sausage patties. I’m pretty sure you even featured that deal and coupon on this site. I was told, We don’t accept printed coupons for “free”. I said, It’s not free. It’s B1G1. Yeah. We don’t accept those either. I was also told they only accept internet coupons “with the scissors at the top”. The ones from coupons.com and that coupon didn’t have the scissors. Well, duh, that’s because it’s a smartsource coupon I was thinking.

So I pulled out my walmart policy where it said they DO accept internet printed coupons for B1G1 with a price listed. The CSM is reading that outloud with her finger on the text like she’s proving me wrong, and then she looks at the coupon and see’s that it says, “Up to $6.98”.. and she was like, “Oh.. Well, we’ll accept it this time.” Like she was doing me a huge favor by allowing me to use a legitimate coupon on a product I’d purchased in complete accordance with their coupon policy.

I get so frustrated trying to save money. It’s a constant battle with cashiers and managers. The default answer is always No. We won’t take this coupon. I have to fight for it every time and I don’t always win. This leaves me angry as I leave the store. Wondering why Walmart treats their customers so poorly.

I see several people mentioned that they had trouble with CVS price matches because you needed a card. I price matched to Rite aid and the girl says, “This says you need a card.” I said, “Yeah?” “Well, can I see your card?” she asks me. I was like, “You want to see my Rite Aid card?!?” I was kind of surprised. She says, “Yes!” So I went in my wallet and pulled it out and she was sort of disappointed that she then had to give me the price and couldn’t tell me no.

I guess they forget that at the end of the day, Walmart signs their paychecks, but us shopping there pays for it.

This is the NORM for our wal-mart – even with the policy and the ad, they still act like you are robbing them blind. Even after a conversation with a CSM, she told me that all cashiers respond differently and maybe the next time select a different cashier and they would be more lenient….I’m like really? I’m following the policy – ain’t nothing to be lenient about!! As a manager you can’t get them all on the same page!?!

My mom has the same experience at hers and has actually been told by a cashier that a CSM is suppose to come stand right there while she checks out as she is notorious for price matching – that it was discussed in their recent meetings!! Sure enough, each time she goes they stalk! Really!?!? What is wal-mart thinking!?! Why have a policy if no one can fairly utilize it or if THEY can’t even abide by it!

Blah! I don’t know why they even bothered offering price matching if they make such stinks about it!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I live in your area and also shop at Sawdust Wal-Mart. I have kids so I always shop around 8pm or later after my husband is home with our boys. I think I know the cashier you’re talking about and I always have problems with him. Because of my shopping late in the evening, I get stuck going thru his line and he always starts pucking the buttons on the cash register or talking ugly to me. It is very stressful and makes me feel like I’m stealing from Wal-Mart

I feel your pain.. I have some cashiers say under their breath (like I cant hear them) that they hate coupons! well Im using them.. so do they hate me?? but I did have an especially nice cashier tell me that they are really cracking down on the cashiers for what they allow to go through.. and its making them think twice about everything in fear of getting written up and or fired.. I have noticed that some csms know the policy and others are very confused.. which the confusion trickles down to the cashiers and then the fear down to us.. it makes me very sad to know that the cashiers are terrified to make a mistake!! I have now learned.. that I always carry my policy in my binder and if there is any question about something I go straight to a csm and ask.. one time I was lucky and had three csms at the desk at one time!! and the two explained my coupon to the one who was confused..

I have had lots of problems at Walmart as well.
I was disagreeing with a cashier and a CSM over the new overage policy.
I ask to see their coupon policy since they should be able to provide their own store policy.
The CSM came over and pulled out the new policy, we read it together and “surprise” she admitted that I was right. Then, she advised the cashier to pay the overage on the coupons.
It is normal policy for each cashier station to have a copy of the coupon policies.
Try to ask for it next time.

I’m glad I’m not alone!! I recently went to get free Scotch tape by price matching to Staples and the coupon didn’t scan. Well the cashier told me I can’t use it since it won’t scan. I said “fine, take them off”. She looked surprised. Then she couldn’t take them off by scanning them and I told her probably because she price matched. She is ignoring me this whole time and calls over a CSM. She explains to the CSM what is going on, I cut in and say “I price matched them” The cashier rudely turns and says “Yes, I know that.” Ended up that I was correct and the CSM told her to just punch it in how she did to begin with!! UHH, so frustrating.

But, I have to say that I did just have a pleasant experience with last time I went because as I walked up to the open cashier, I said “Are you coupon friendly?” She said “Yeah, come on!” By the end of it she was amazed at how much I saved and was telling others. I’m now going to ask everyone this!

I don’t WalMart is the only one with problems either. I just tried the Tide travel size deal at Target and the supervisor told me that Target is not allowed to accept coupons for free travel size. I was like WHAT! Your coupon policy says you can just change the price. “Well I’ve been a supervisor here for a year and we’ve never been allowed to do that.” I told her to take them off, then she proceeded to accept them after all that. “I will accept them this time.” –I hate when they say that!

Oh boy, this sounds just like my Walmart, which is why I’d rather shop three different stores each week than try to do price-matching there! I was accused of photocopying a b&w coupon once, which I would never, ever think of doing (and apparently copies can’t be made in color?), and another time had to wait for a manager to approve a 3 cent overage (I didn’t have a stack of coupons either time, five coupons or less). Good thing you can let your hubby manage the Walmart shopping most of the time!

The Wal-mart on booth road in warner robins, Ga is fantastic with coupons. They have a display of coupon related products, have a “if it scans, we take it” attitude, gets excited when someone saves a lot and has a manager that uses coupons and is extremely knowledgeable about the policy. The management team are extremely coupon friendly and if you have issues, they will come immediately.

I guess I got lucky at my walmart last week, I hadn’t been in there much lately due to them not doing double coupons and not having good sales etc. So get to the checkout with a few coupons. First I notice they have their coupon policy all printed out on a laminated card hanging from the credit card scanner thing. Next I ask the guy if he will take one of my coupons, he was like hold on let me ask, so I was like ok ask about this too. It was a ECB from cvs. and one from walgreens. He asks another cashier if they take these she’s like yes. So i give him all my RR and ECB and even a coupon I got from the cvs scanner machine thingy for $10 off an order over 50 dollars. He scanned everything thru, if it beeped he overided it! He even asked me what to do with the ten dollar off one, “sooo, just like take off ten dollars?” I’m like yep… he did.. i ended up saving 23 dollars with RR and ECB from cvs and walgreens! I walked out of there shaking, sure they were gonna tackle me in the parking lot! I had my three kids with me, 16, 12, and 19. My 19 y.o son who works at Harveys supermarket was like, dang they take all those coupons here? I guess it paid off for one cashiers ignorance but to my advantage… I haven’t been back in , I hope he didn’t get fired! lol

Honestly, the policy does state store managers discretion at the bottom (if you have access to the corporate site). That means they can take register rewards and cents off competitor coupons if the management team decides to do so. Within reason, they will honor these at some stores (Obviously, they will not take 100 target store coupons for one item). It is seen as a form of price matching by the mgmt at some locations.

Always be patient, and calmly ask for a manager when something doesn’t go your way. It usually can be resolved and without all the frustration. If you are already getting hostile, facts and the underlying problem seem to get lost when trying to resolve your issue. Without the facts and a straight forward description of the problem, it is hard to solve.

I will leave you with this thought.. The cashiers and managers get embarrassed when you have to wait in line a long time. Many things can happen to slow down the process. I can assure you most of the time they are doing everything within their power to make the process as quick and easy as possible. That is certainly the case where I shop.

I am baffled by the fact that you knowingly used coupons fraudulently AND the fact that you showed your children it is ok to still from someone as long as you don’t get caught. My store in Missouri asks that you have the ad with you when the price match is for 50% off or more, just so they can check. I always have my ads with me, ALWAYS!!! On the plus side, my cashiers are rather nice about it. I’ve even left the ads with the cashiers when I’m done so they can get the sale prices too 🙂

The solution is easy….CALL 1 800 WALMART and complain. Do this standing right in front of the cashier. Be sure to give the rep on the phone the name of this cashier. Then have the rep on the phone explain the policy to the cashier! When the manager gets notice from corporate about this, things will change. Call and complain every time you have a problem with WalMart. If a store gets enough complaints, that store gets a visit from the guys at corporate. Every time I have called the 1800 line, the response was “we will make it right”. And the store does.
Good luck and remember to call.

And if the manager does not call you back or does not follow-thru, call 1800walmart again and ask for the next person in the chain-of-command. Store manager, district manager, regional manager, Sam Walton’s Boy, God.

It is difficult to get past the DM but persist until it is straightened out. I finally got resolution at the regional manager level.

Please….. stand your ground! Ignoring or not understanding the policy will not change if they are continually getting away with it!

I live in Bentonville, Arkanass – home of Wal-Mart. And like another has stated, you’d think their cashiers would know their store policy but that is not always the case. And unfortunately, where ever you go there will always be someone like this.

However, on a positive note, I had a SUPER cashier at my local Wal-Mart who TOTALLY knew the policy and told me the best way to save at Wal-Mart is price matching. He was extremely freindly and even shook my hand for saving so much on my bill after coupons. This kinds of customer service is rare and I totally appreciate.

Well she tried to do it on her own this past saturday and actually did just fine but after she was finished cashing out a security person? (Im guessing) Came up to her and told her she needed to come to the back. They took her to the back and claimed she was shoplifting by using certain coupons to get items for free with overage. My mom was in tears, they told her they wouldnt prosecute but that she would have to give them back the products. I felt so bad for her, she now never wants to coupon again or atleast not at Walmart.

You know the survey that is on the receipt? You should complain on both of your tickets.
You should talk to the store manager, explain your problem with the cashier from hell not just this time, but from other previous times. But courteous. You’ll get a lot further with honey than with vinegar.
You should then call up corporate and explain the problem.
I feel your pain. Try to have the store policy in hand next time. That cashier needs to be educated, disciplined and fired IMO. He was way out of line with his attitude!

Don’t let this become the norm!!! We must stand up for our rights as consumers!!!

I could have written this myself as the same thing happened to me at our Walmart last night. Cashier has been there since inception, late at night, only one register open. She did not want to price match my items as I did not have the paper. She kept telling me it was my responsibility and I needed to be more organized. I was hot, but kept cool. She finally called the CSM over and she told her to price match them. The other items were on advil and a whole other story. My daughter told me before we checked out that she was going to give us grief…and she did. I think I will put my items back before I go thru her line again. She told me they did not keep out of town ads as they have no way to get them…it was Dollar General (not even a 1/4 mile away) and Walgreens. Walgreens is out of town but they do price match as I have asked the managers. They carry every state and local paper in the store to sell. Therefore, they do have access. She then told me that she had to bring all of these items to the CSM attention as I would want them brought to my attention if it was my business. Grrr..

At a Walmart in Jacksonville, NC, I was told by a CSM that she could not accept my printed coupons because they were counterfeit. How did she know this? Well two reasons-some were in color and some were black and white. Hmmm…well the black and white were from my laser printer and the color were from my mom’s printer. (I was on vacation) She then told me that she could tell they were copies. I said how? She said “like this” and preceded to LICK HER FINGER AND RUN IT OVER THE COUPON. Not just one. But ALL of the printed ones. (and there were a bunch) I just stood there. All that kept going thru my head was “I DON’T WANT YOUR COOTIES!” She handed them back to me and I walked out. (COOTIE COUPONS EWW!!) I went straight home and fired off an email to coorporate and to the store manager. The next day I got a call from the manager and she says to me, “I don’t think I am understanding your email right. She LICKED your coupons?” Ummm yeah. You understand it perfectly. She says “I’m really sorry but I’m going to start laughing right now. I can’t believe she did that.” Anyway…long story longer, I got to use my cootie coupons that night. The manager left a note for me. And guess who I picked to check me out!! 😛 PAYBACKS! Go lick some more coupons!!! *UGH* I get so frustrated with cashiers (and CSM’s) who like to make up their own rules!!

I went through the same thing at my walmart and in the end waited over 20 mins for a manager just to prove the cashier right. She said “u people” as in us extreme couponers lol, lol andyways she said that we are the reason theres never anything on the shelves and they have to do all this price matching. Then she adds that we are all probably lying and the prices we are giving them are wrong. I definetly complained afterwards. Im hoping there arnt people out there being stupid about pricing and ruining it for all of us who are honest! Sorry about ur situation but its nice ur husband stepped in like that!

Wow reading all of this at least let’s me know that I am not alone. When I first started couponing I had the nightmare trip from he** at Wal Mart and I almost gave up using coupons because of that…My solution is simply not to go to Wal Mart at all…I have tried my local store and the stores in the next town and the results are the same rude cashiers and CSMs refusing to take this coupon or that one for one reason after another…I now go to rite aid, CVS, and albersons I never ever have problems at those stores and the staff love to see how much I save. I have not been back to Wal Mart since March of this year and won’t be back until they fix their issues and learn their policies…It is really a shame because it would be so much easier to shop one store than several but I do what I must to save money for my family. I think it is awesome that you stood your ground Tiffany and kudos to Paul for backing you up! But until Wal Mart gets their act together they don’t need my money.

I have only had one experience like that and it was not in any of the Wlamarts I usually go to, but I was out of town. I finally found the Bengay and wanted use my qpons before they expired they were no the only thing I had. My mom wa doing the trns and I was dealing with my 2 yr olds fit. I was looking at the receipt while my Aunt was checking out and noticed that she did not scan one of the bengay qpons and let her know that I wanted it back and would go to customer service and get it corrected she said I would have to wait for the next costomer, using cash (with attitude and I was being nice saying please and thank you) . we waited about 5mins and she took their money and closed the drawer uuhhhh . So I said “mam I am still waiting for you to give me back my qpon” hen she rolled her eyes and said ” now I have to call a manager” 5 more mins and she came over, the cashier presided to give a attitude telling the lady what happened and what I was needing. I was mad and added that I had been standing there waiting and she opened and closed the register 5 sec before calling her, as nicnest as I could. I was red hot literally my face was on fire.

Tiffany, I understand how you feel cause we have a cashier here that is so rude and everytime I go through her line she sighs with every coupon, looks at her watch with every price match, and while I get my flyers ready she feels the need to tell me that her shift is ALMOST over and they will NOT pay her overtime but she will have to stay becuse of me and my coupons. She finds it necessary to be extremely rude to me everytime I am there. She actually asked me why I ride a motorized scooter instead of walking like most people my age LOL. Well I said cause I have bad lungs and its from holding my breath so I don’t yell at rude people like you and by the way your hair looks extremely lovely today. Wow you keep looking at your watch can I see it? Yea its a real nice one. I got one for my daughter for 5.00 too. Now back to my price matching and by the way what days do you work cause I really like you and only want to come to your register 🙂 She doesn’t harrass me anymore.

i know my sister was using coupons. the cashier told the other customers that they may as well go to another line, we have a couponer up here. how rude right?? so, my sister being the ball of fire she is called the manager n duty and gave him an earful. then i told her to call corp. she did and she told them that she was never going in there again and she would drive to the walmart in the next state. the person on the line said she shouldn’t have to do that and that she would get a call within 24 hours about her complaint. well she did get a call!!! it was the store manager he told her how sorry he was for her bad experience and that to come in to talk to him. she did that and he apologized again and gave her a 25 dollar gift card. she was happy but, she used it at the walmart in the next state. lol

WATCH OUT for the store in LEESVILLE, LA. I have had the same cashier and CSM give me all kinds of trouble on multiple occassions about their interpretation of a cpn and even flat out refusing to let me use it because it would give me overage and/or because they personally thought I was getting “too good of a deal” . She actually said that to me when I tried to do the recent buy ANY olay body wash, lotion or bar get free shave gel and the buy ANY 3 advil cpns. First she denied me usage because she insisted it would give me overage (WHICH IT WOULD NOT!) but when I showed her that regardless if it did or not, she was required to give me overage, her and the CSM decided I couldn’t use it becuase it was “too good of a deal” and so it must not have been meant for me to use it that way. I have complained to the local store and I have sent letters to HQ but so far, not much has changed but the first time I didn’t have names and such, this time I did. I refuse to let them get away with this anymore because they are the ONLY place in town we have to shop besides WAGS and Market Basket so I don’t have the luxury of going to a different store and I am tired of being treated this way by these two ladies.

I work nights so I always have to go after work which is 11PM and for some reason, she is the only cashier on duty and the same CSM in on duty. Believe me, I did NOT want to even check out when I saw she was my cashier but there was no other lanes open! She interrogates me about why I had so many of the same internet cpns and tell me this is a sign of fraud! (I have 2 puters so I never usually have more than 4 and they ALL have different numbers on them!)She also asks my why I have so many of the same mfg cpns and such and would read every single one, even the duplicates like I am trying to change them and use them fradulently or something! AND lord help me, they don’t know the difference in one per purchase and one per transaction! I even spoke w/an asst mgr on the phone and she agreed with them on the one per purchase vs one per transaction thing and they are SO WRONG on this. When I pointed out that cpns that actually limit your amt of a certain cpn per transaction actually says xx cpns per transaction, she just informed me that they (the company who prints the cpn) are just contradicting themselves. I am so frustrated by this and then these two ladies talk to me and treat me like I am trying to steal something or use cpns in a fraudulant manner. I have left in tears several times and furious because of these two ladies. There has GOT to be something that can be done about this. I know that those who are out there scamming have made it harder on the rest of us to use cpns legitimately, so I understand they have to be careful, but they need to sit down, contact the cpn redemption centers and clarify things like the one per purchase, one per transaction thing or the deal where the cashier says you have to go by the picture and don’t even care what the wording says (such as the cpns that have no specific limits and say ANY) and the sit down and make their policy based on these things. They need to be more specific about their guidelines but MOST OF ALL they need to make sure that the dang employees KNOW THE POLICY and are actually going by the policy and not their own personal feelings about allowing me to use a cpn or not because they think I am getting too good of a deal or not. Thanks for letting me rant. There has got to be something we can do!

I have to admit that I can usually find some good bargains at Walmart but I have to fight for all of it. Ours also hates to price match, take competitors coupons. I am almost to the point of not shopping there anymore. I always come out with my blood pressure so high. Our store has some really stupid managers. They actually told me when I pulled out the policies that they did not know that walmart posted these for everyone to see. I just don’t know what to do about it. Any advice?

The only thing you can do is call 1-800-Walmart. you may want to try to schedule a meeting with your store manager and explain what your issues are. If its not a heat of the moment issue it may sink in better.

Somewhere, I once saw the suggestion of taking the time to criss-cross your coupons and hand them over one at a time to help make sure that all get scanned when you are using a lot. I started trying it after having some coupons missed and going through the hassle of sorting it out. It works great. I have had to explain why I do it to a few of the lesser impatient clerks, but I don’t mind that.

Mary, There was noone ready to brawl, well not until now. This was an unplanned stop into Walmart at 8:00 pm when my wife had left the house at about 9:00 am. If you have followed my blog you would know that I preach to have your ad with you. While ideal, it is not always available,(you like when you have driven all over the city with 9 children on a trip 11 hours after you left the house) which is why Walmart has the policy in the first place. I have no problem with a cashier asking if we have the ad. But insisting that we have to have it and being rude is where the problem is, not with someone who followed the company policy to a tee. Do you get it now?

i know exactley how you feel i went to wal-mart today tried to get the trial size tide laundry detergent. was told they where not taking this coupon for the trial size anymore because some people came in there and was buying them out. i mean i only had two coupons and their was no trials size excluded written on the coupon. plus i had gotten some 20 oz free coke coupons from my coke rewards. i had 12 of them and figured i would go ahead and get them since i was there and i needed to pick some sprite up for my mom who was fighting a stomach virus. but anyways the cashier i love had to get approval thru csm b/c they had just had a meeting saying they had to go thru csm with that many of the same coupon. i say no problem the csm says i can only use four of them and then i can go stand in another line and do another four but not with the same cashier. nowhere on these coupons does there state a limit. i was so frustrated. so luckily i had three cashiers next to each other that where empty and they thought all of this was stupid as well. so as not to take out my aggravation on the cashier i gave all three of them a free coke on me. it seemed to make there day and made me feel better too seeing how happy they where from my small gift. 🙂

I NEVER go without an ad when I price match & when we get to the item I show it to them in the ad. BUT being rude to ANY customer is even MORE stupid~~~Expecially over a freakin $!!!

When I went to our Wal Mart last night, I had the fastest ever cashier who did all of my price matching on peaches and other items without stalling or complaining one bit! But then when I looked at my receipt, I noticed a random .25 charge for something…it looked like “peaches 70 ct”, with an ‘x” to the right of the .25. I came back and asked the nice cashier, but he didn’t know , and just said to go to customer service which had a long line. I contemplated whether or not it was worth the .25 to stand in line. There were 2 customer service people taking care of the long line of people, so I decided to just go ahead. Well one of those was taking forever taking care of just one customer, but when that one customer was finally finished, it would have been my turn, except that the guy then looked at me and said “I’m closed now” and I said “that figures”. All this for .25…….just my luck. So I ended up waiting 10 to 15 minutes to get my mere .25 back. The customer service guy said something about that my cashier had scanned the upc# on one of the peaches , or something ( I had a separate charge for all of my peaches). Whatever, I guess that’s something to look for and make sure you don’t get charged for the cashier scanning the UPC# on the produce.

I had the same kind of experience. The elderly checker told me she was one year away from retirement, and Walmart had become unbearable to work for in the last couple years. She also repeatedly told me that she hated coupons the whole time she rang up my order. She refused to price match, and since it wasn’t a huge difference I didn’t argue. However, I took my receipt and called the Main Store Manager the next day. They don’t want you to have a bad experience. He told me that he would talk to that checker directly and apologized up one side and down the other. He then transferred me to the main CSM. She informed me that they were going to take each cashier and CSMs on duty individually aside and ask them what they don’t understand about Walmart policies, so that confusion is alleviated. Whether they did, and whether or not it worked, remains to be seen, but it seemed good in theory.

There’s a couple problems here, there is no way for every checker to know what Walmart will and wont accept on a weekly basis. I was told by the main CSM their policies change from store to store weekly. The second problem is nasty, mean people who are downright rude about their coupons. Or, people who don’t know how to use their coupons, and get mad when they are told no. They give us a bad name.

I have had some amazing price matching experiences at Walmart. I have also had times where I felt like someone has whacked me up side the head with a 2 x 4 when I’ve left. One thing the CSM told me is, when you first get in to that store, you find the CSM on duty, and you ask him/her which cashier is best at handling transactions with coupons. She told me that they should be able to direct you to a cashier that won’t make your shopping trip a living h-e- double hockey stick. Hope this helps.

One thing I try to keep in mind when I go thru a line at Walmart is, what kind of experiences has this checker had before I got here? I may be a little naive but I would hope that people are that horrible on a normal every day basis. Maybe your meany face checker just downright hates his job and takes it out on everyone with a coupon binder. I definitely know I could never work at Walmart 😉

I have had a lot of problems too…PM’ing is always a horrible experience for me. And forget using coupons on top of the PM’ed items. Once I went in to use the KY Jelly coupon Tiffany posted and the cashier REFUSED to let me use it cause it didnt match the picture. When I told her the coupon said ANY she said it meant ANY in the picture. the was only one in the picture so why would it say ANY??? so i asked for a CSM and she laughed at me and said the CSM would just tell me the same thing. I said I still wanted to talk to the CSM, who actually ended up laughing at the cashier because she didnt know how to read a coupon. another time I tried PM was the Kerri lotion frm the Walgreens ad, and the CSM said they would give me $3 off, where the $3 came from i have no idea? when i tried to explain abt the RR he interrupted me and said Oh no we dont take RR’s and i said thats not what i asked. ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS IF YOU PM BEFORE OR AFTER THE RR??? he saw the after RR price and said oh no thats too good a deal we cant do that. so i said nevermind I’ll find a different CSM and maybe they’ll know the policy…im so frustrated and will only go if its like the deal of the century because im tired of all the bull…

I haven’t had too many problems, sort of the opposite actually. Before I started couponing I used to dread this one older man cashier. He happens to be the slowest at my nearest store. One day after I started using coupons my opinion of him changed. I now look for his line. He is patient and makes sure to get everything correct. He even told me how proud my husband should be that I am using coupons to save money.

Thank you for your story. It shows us that even the “Specialists”
moments out there in shopping world. Seems to me there may be more about this cashier that we DON’T know. Management Sometimes steer clear of whacked employees for some reason! As for price matching, my memory is not that great. I may REALLY think I have a 2:00 apt and be wrong! So I am interested in how Walmart backs this policy up? I pray I continue to have the general good service I’ve been getting. I have learned to give coupons a few at a time to MAKE sure everything is scanned. And properly. It also allows you to have more control as the transaction moves along. ( Check anyway! Tonight at Wally land she missed $4. ) And I handed 4 $4 spread out like cards! The dedication we have! Thank you for the hard work. And Paul Bless you for being such a good man and Husband!

I live in nowhere Marshalltown, Iowa. And Paul I too heart the mart. We are blessed The CSM’s in our store are all about the saving. They want you to Price Match and use your coupons. They even have a list taped to the registers of the items they think will be matched and most of the cashiers match for you and tell you as they are scanning things like Walgreens has eggs for $0.69 this week I matched it for you. I also have match other things with and without the Ad and if I do not have the Ad and it sounds like the price is okay they just ring it. If it is a really really great deal they get a CSM to sign off on it. I have been going thur the store and the manager say to me go ahead and get it have the price match it to so, and so on something I did not even no about. I have even haggled at my walmart. I was buying a TV got the manager and said can you tell me when this was on sale last, when is your last sale date before it goes on clearance and what it the best price you will give me today. Most of the time they laugh at me and say lets go take a look. The TV was $279.00 I bought it for $229.00. I wish you all luck with your stores I really hope it gets better for all of you.

I have 2 good cashiers at my regular Walmart, but they can’t works all the time! So far, every other cashier has done nothing but made my blood BOIL! The bad experiences tend to stem from a general attitude from the cashier as if my couponing is STEALING FROM THEM! It’s really unfortunate. I had a cashier once argue with her manager because a coupon I was using was more than the item cost (yay overage!) and she did not want to give me the coupon value. Her manager said, the coupon was ok to use for the full amount and they do not adjust coupons down or turn them down if valid (a manager I was really liking for this!) and the cashier continued to talk back and tell her she didn’t want to accept the coupon. It got to the point that the manager said, “do you want me to ring it up or something?!” and the cashier shut up and did her job. I understand if maybe she got in trouble in the past for a coupon mishap, but this was not one of them. I really hope she got some sort of insubordination write up for her little fit she threw. Another cashier wouldn’t let me price match construction paper without an ad, out of spite I got another newspaper to pull the ad (more coupons!), and the construction paper pack I was trying to match. The ad’s photo had multiple types of packs, but no specific quantity in the text, just a price and brand. The cashier was able to make out the (microscopic) qty on the package to be a 99 count… I had the 98 count… seriously. Her attitude was bad to start with, but at this point she proceeded to treat me like I was an attempted thief over an honest mistake of 1 sheet of construction paper; she rudely scrutinized every coupon I had, and moaned and groaned the whole time she read each one and compared the items she put in bags. I calmly asked her to go ahead and give me back my coupons, asked her to void the order and just ring up the paper and gave her $2 for it (since I did kinda take it apart a bit). She gave me a dirty look and I simply told her I’ll take my business down the street for 1 more piece of construction paper and a better attitude. I understand that I was wrong, thanks to her laser vision, but there’s no excuse for the attitude. Just move on! Get over it! << Hey! That should be the Walmart cashier mantra… I want to see it painted on the wall in every break room! I'd rather waste gas and money than deal with that attitude. I know couponing is about saving, but sometimes you just need to send a message. I work hard to stay calm when couponing with angry cashiers as to not drag other couponers down in these cashier's eyes… sometimes they're having a terrible day and maybe my nicely sitting there and letting them act rude is making their shift a little less rough. I also don't like to get upset (at least outwardly), it ruins my day, and I don't look like one of those crazy people who get taken out of Walgreens at 2am by security because they didn't get the money back (haha!) that their coupon overage was supposed to produce for them (HAHA!). And yes, I have seen that too… insomnia couponing can be quite entertaining. The best part was when the cashier sat back and chuckled a bit because this lady was so angry over like $1. I gotta admit, I was laughing at her too… WOW!

I have taken Tiffany’s advise to “profile” my cashiers. Of course in situations like this that isn’t always possible. Poor people at Walmart must think I am insane as I pace back and forth near the check out lanes looking for either a young kid or one of my regulars to check out. I have actually waited or even walked around the store a bit more until I find a proper cashier because the hassle just isn’t worth it. I know EXACTLY the cashier Tiffany is talking about and I wouldn’t buy a pack of gum from him! If he acts like that with coupons and price matching I am sure it spills over to his overall customer service to shoppers and is not doing the store any favors! The biggest thing is to truly know the policy so that you are honest in your use of those benefits. It is easy to grab the wrong size or miss something that would exclude a product from price match or coupons, but if you KNOW you are right stick to your guns (nicely) and ask for a CSM or call Walmart to file a complaint. They need to know how many shoppers take advantage of these benefits and that their stores, managers and cashiers follow them and are trained properly.

Walmart in Country Club Hills is all right with price matching but I always make sure I bring my ad because they never know the policy. Sometimes they try to ring you up so fast that they mess up. That’s why I hand them a couple of my coupons at a time. Unfortunately, I profile for my favorite cashier, and I was mad when I couldn’t get her the last time I went to Walmart cause it was so busy. She had closed right when I was about to check out.

I have vowed to NEVER go to walmart at night ever again because of issues like this. It seems the only time I ever had issues was when I went out ‘ after dinner’ . I have even suggested to all my family in friends to follow my same code just to have everything go smoother. I too LOVE walmart. I really is the best store to shop at. I really don’t like when they say ‘ We don’t price match that store anyway ‘ ugh. I just feel like saying, ‘ Well geez where do you think I got this ad, I must have had it shipped over night from a third world country just so I could get away with murder ripping you off and taking money straight out of your personal pocket!! ‘ haha ^ I would never say that, however we all have thoughts 🙂 Stick to shopping after the kids start school and the little ones have recently ate. I find that to be the easiest for me, and I like to get all my prep done the day before I actually go. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi, I am glad to know I am not the only one that has hard times checking out at Wal-Mart. However, everytime I have gone to the New Bern, NC store I have had one problem after the other. The cashiers are rude, they role their eyes, the computer is telling them I did not get the item and I am showing them I did, they still will not take the coupon, so I give the item back and have it taken off my bill, one coupon will scan but the other that is just like the first will not and they will not over ride, they give me excuse after excuse, but can’t explain why it took one and not the other! I have even been told by a cashier to “just take your coupons to Food Lion or Harris Teeter”! I have pretty much banned the New Bern wal-mart from my shopping trips. I now drive the extra 30 mins to the one in Havelock, NC. It’s out of the way, but so worth it!

Thank you Tiffany for sharing your experience and Paul for allowing us to ‘vent’ our own experiences as well. I have been price matching at WM now for over 1 year and have so many experiences from H-e-double-hockey sticks, that under any other circumstance, I would have ceased shopping at the chain EONS ago. I do LOVE WM, love love love them… but in the past 5 months have changed my shopping habits re: Price Matching, which has resulted in a lower amount being spent at WM each week. Since March, I have made a point of purchasing some of my PM items from the actual stores who have them on sale, which I might add are much closer to my home than WM itself (meaning I used to drive 5 miles out of my way to give WM my business but now I won’t). After seeing WM’s most recent QE results, it would behoove WM Corporate, imho, to take note of your expereince, as well as the posts below from all their customers around the country. In that light, I would also like to share just a few of my horrid experiences (and one quite long, since it’s a compilation of a series of events and visits).

A shorter story: At the Dallas (Old Denton/Geo Bush) WM I went to redeem my August Cascade and Ball pectin coupons, appropriately, legally, and in a small order (rather than my normal shopping visit). Going through the Express Lane, I had 2 transactions because I had (5) Cascade Q’s and ensured I followed the “4 Like coupon” rule. My first transaction was just (1) Cascade Trial, which at .97 would allow for a .03 overage. She rang it up, scanned my coupon and said I owed WM .03. Politely I asked her to look at the (-) sign in front of that .03. Then she told me they don’t give money back, and I said “Your corporate policy has been since March that infact you do.” There was some sort of “Awaiting CSM approval” on the register screen, and from afar, the CSM (without ever appearing in person) was evidently reviewing my little teeny tiny purchase. The cashier continued to tell me WM does NOT give cash back, and I told her I’d be happy to go to my car to get their written policy (since I left my binder in the car as I was just coming in for a few specific items- I never leave home w/o my binder, but sometimes I do leave it in the car). She said that wasn’t necessary but continued to argue with me. UGH. I still had the larger transaction, which I knew already that not only would I get .03 x 4 for more Cascade, but also for Ball pectin -another .03 x 4. Oh boy. FINALLY it was approved, got my .03 and waited for the ____ to hit the fan with the next transaction and of course it did, and her pleasant attitude with me quickly turned nasty. I believe in treating another how they are treating me- and my pleasant demeanor quickly turned gruff. While the ‘Awaiting CSM approval’ (from afar) popped up again I explained the entire policy since I (rightfully) knew we’d have a long pause in time. She kept repeating in all the YEARS she worked for WM, she NEVER heard of this policy. I have had so many of the same comments from newer employees but decided to jump upon her tenure comment and say “I wish WM would TRAIN their employees!” A moment later, another cashier came by and my cashier asked her about the Q policy. She confirmed what I told her and NEVER did my cashier apologize for not knowing her own company’s rules and still reluctantly gave me my overeage.

As a former top exec in a large national company, with hundreds of employees under my umbrella, not only would I hold the managers/supvsrs up and down the food chain responsible for not training the employees they manage properly, I would have also sent multiple company wide emails/memos as a reminder- as well as addressing the issue with our president, to have it addressed from the top as well. There is absolutely NO excuse for WM’s stores and their employees to not know a policy that has been HIGHLY publicized on national/international news (such as CNN) but also for over the last year in expensive TV commercial campaigns.

And WM wonders why people are spending less money there? This entire thread is a compilation of exactly why!

(next comment will reference experiences at my normally frequented WM)

This sort of situation has happened to me as well! And with 3 very “OVER THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE” children and a very tired and cranky mama! It’s good to see how you handled it wasn’t any different than how I handle it. Such a relief! I do happen to have a couple cashiers I will usually only go to. HOWEVER just recently one of my favorite cashiers went to the “dark side” and is very anti-coupon and she was my FAVORITE before as she would always smile and have no issues with my coupons or price matching, but she said because so many people do it wrong and try to get things for free she wants no part in it. Mind you this is while she’s scanning my coupons and smiling..but even with that I am not as comfortable with her anymore. Because she told me that it’s not RIGHT that us couponers can get travel size items and use a coupon on it and get it free….I told her that Walmart still gets their money but she said that’s not the issue with her…the issue is that people get ANYTHING for free when others could need it more!

I normally choose my cashiers carefully and have my favorites, but last Friday we shopped at a time that we are not usually at WM. I had a coupon for $1.50/2 bags on dog treats and a coupon for a free bag of soft treats WYB 2 bags. The cashier tells me that I cannot use 2 coupons on the same product. I say, I am not-I am purchasing 3 so I should be able to use both. She says, with a smile ‘I don’t think this is right, but our recent training says to make sure the customer is happy with price matching and coupons.’ I was very happy to know that there is some training going on for the WalMart employees-I try to put myself in their shoes and imagine it were me checking someone out with an overloaded shopping cart, wanting certain things in reuseable shopping bags, price matching several items and then scanning all these coupons-all before payment. Needless to say the coupons scanned without an issue and I was well on my way out the doors with a smile on my face too!

Whatever happened to the customer is RIGHT? I have a good friend that is a regional VP for another company. He loves to hear about things like this in his stores. I mean that is his job to make sure things like this are not happening in his area. It is the manager’s job to make the customer happy without breaking company policy. But he also have the authority to over ride if it makes sense to keep the customer happy. His saying to his managers “It only takes 1 mad customer to have an effect on 20, But one happy customer will tell about 5 people how good it was. So never make the customer unhappy over little things (Small Amounts)” I am glad you stood your ground. I do the same thing, I’ll hold up their line as long as it takes and pull more attention to how they are doing my wrong but doing just that.

ok, don’t hurt me, but I have had nothing but good experiences at Walmart (Clarksville, Tn). I had quite a few coupons once & asked a manager which cashier to go to. She recommended one & said she was always great. I passed the comment on to the cashier & she was grateful for the acknowledgement. Another time a different cashier priced matched something she knew was on sale at another store on her own. My daughter was complimented on her coupon use by another cashier. We must be truly blessed.

(very longwinded… and thank you again for letting us share our experiences)
The Dallas/Plano WM (Park & Tollway) has been my favorite store to shop for over 5 years now. At one time this was WM’s national Flagship store for a new store layout and above par customer service. Oh how I miss those days! This store carried many items that other stores did not, including some gourmet items in the grocery section. I LOVED it. The personnel was ALWAYS in a good mood and so fun to talk to and I spent so much time (and literally hundreds of thousands of dollars) in this particular store because of it. Times change, and so have my spending habits.

In the past year, since I started PM’g items, I have had some interesting experiences. The first round of troubles began with a specific ad from El Rancho (a local Latin grocery). The produce prices were awesome (like 20 limes for $1). When I first started PM, I went straight to CS desk and asked them (with ads in hand) to explain how to PM appropriately and this included El Rancho. For a while things went smoothly, then suddenly I was told by the cashier that they couldn’t (and had NEVER) PM from El Rancho. I said I have my receipt from last week to show that infact I most certainly HAVE been able to PM El Rancho and wanted to know when/why this changed (with no answer given). I waited for the CSM (and 2 appeared) and I went through the same thing- and by then, had pulled my receipts from previous weeks (since at the time I kept them in my binder until I entered into my Excel spreadsheet for savings tracking). Again they both told me WM NEVER PM’d El Rancho, and blamed previous cashiers for not knowing (despite I’d been told by CS desk as well as doing it for over 6 months). I asked how was I as a consumer supposed to know which stores WM did and didn’t PM for- was there a list of stores on a website or at the CS desk that I could check before going through this trouble. No! “We have NEVER PM’d El Rancho” echoed again but they’d give it to me “this time”. I have a hard time letting principled things go, so for the next few weeks, I started asking cashiers I knew better and they couldn’t tell me either. One told me WM doesn’t consider EL Rancho a competitor. Another was because El Rancho was more than 5 miles away. Ok- at least an answer I could understand (but no where was this information posted for the consumer). So to solve the 5 mile issue, I went to a WM closer (Coit & Geo Bush) and visited the CS desk ahead of my purchase and was told ‘sure, no problem’. So I began splitting my purchases between the two stores- produce items at Coit/Bush and all remaining items at my “most favorite” Park/Tollway. Then a few weeks into this way, Coit/Bush told me I couldn’t PM produce from El Rancho because “their manager went to El Rancho and the produce was not of the same QUALITY as WM’s”. Whaaat? Are you serious? Half the time WM’s produce QUALITY isn’t up to par as say Sprouts, but I still buy it due to LOYALTY! I decided I wanted my oranges (which is what they wouldn’t let me PM) and I’d find a way to get them- and after that, I’d not only stop shopping at the Coit/Bush store- but also ADD a trip to El Rancho to my routine. So this last time, I drove straight to the Neighborhood WM (Coit/Beltline) about a mile away, got 40/$2 oranges (instead of 20), giggled all the way home I got what I wanted and proceeded to spend a few days juicing (and the 40 limes I’d gotten at the Coit store moments before). It was the LAST time I went to that WM and the beginning of purchasing items at the actual stores that had the sales.

Since I learned WM’s new policy stated that the sales ads were not required, it was one less ‘package’ I needed to cart around (a large purse, a packed 3 inch coupon binder, and large supply of green shopping bags). Back to shopping exclusively at Park/Tollway WM, I started making a list of the PM items, by store- item name, size and price. This was super helpful with the cashiers I had built friendships with (despite my photographic memory allows me to rattle the prices off the top of my head) but began proving a complete headache with newer (and some grunpy existing) cashiers. A policy is a policy, so I decided I would just start asking for CSM if showing the policy itself in black/white didn’t work. If that meant I was holding up the line, sobeit. Needless to say, I learned the CSM’s quickly- and viceversa. As soon as they showed up and saw my face- they would snip – she doesn’t need the ad. One time (on purpose) I made a sort of snide comment under my breath (conveniently loud enough for the CSM to hear it) “How hard is it to train your employees of your corporate policy?” Whooopsie. (lol)

I stand on principle especially when I know I’m correct. I figured the more the CSMs saw me WEEK AFTER WEEK doing the same thing – and the result was me holding up their lines (with customers behind me getting upset AT WM -but watching how I was saving loads of money, and asking me to show them how to do it- which I most certainly did), I thought perhaps this would spawn (most responsible CUSTOMER SERVICE managers) a change in policy, I was learning they didn’t care. Because this course of action was proving to give me a headache, I decided I’d start hiding the ads on me but only at the very last minute would I give them…. but there would be a scene first… and a loud (but polite) one first.

After a while things got better, and I also learned to shop the same day/time so I knew my favorite cashiers were working. Much less headaches- and better service.

Then a new aspirin product came out with a flood of coupons everywhere. One particular week I saw a sale at another grocery chain for the same item (.99) and I had a great coupon allowing me overage. I wanted to try it- and so I ran to my WM. I got a cashier I had seen in the store before but had never checked out with. This particular week I hadn’t had a chance to get the paper ads yet (always check them on Wed am on my phone) so if there’s a disclaimer, it’s microscopic. (and this was the first and ONLY time I’ve ever gone off the ad from my phone) First this cashier argued with me that I couldn’t PM without the ad, then there was too much of a price discrepancy ($2.75 vs. .99) and then when I whipped out my coupon- she said ABSOLUTELY NOT could I get this item for free, let alone with overage to my basket total. WTH! I asked for a CSM, and after about 15 minutes of waiting at the register, one never came she decided she’d give it to me… (the standard) “this one time”. What I wouldn’t know until later that week when I was entering the line by line receipt into Excel (ok, I’m a geek) I noticed that SHE ADJUSTED MY MFG’S COUPON DOWN TO .99!

That was it. I had it!

I went to Albertsons to get the paper to take it with me to WM. Upon looking at the microscopic * wording, I noticed it said “price after in-store MFG coupon”. Whoopsie. MY error about the price- so I wanted to make that right. But I also wanted to address the issue about her downgrading my coupon, when it’s against corporate policy.

After a dental appointment (numb mouth, pain pill and all) I marched into WM and asked for the store manager. Despite a gallant effort by the CS desk to help me– and me going through the CSM whom she insisted must first be contacted before the manager (fine, I’ll play your game- I just said when the CSM got there, to get the manager because I was filing a complaint and had already gone through enough CSM’s). I was steamed!

The manager finally appeared and I proceeded to explain the aspirin situation. First I explained the PM and coupon issues I had with the cashier, then the error I made about the PM. I assured him I always take extra care to ensure I am following protocol to the letter and felt bad that I made an error- not in my favor. I owed the store money and wanted to make it right. I explained the whole issue with not having to have the ads and he assured me, he would address these issues in a CSM meeting they were having later that day (as well as a storewide email to all EEs). He then called a CSM over so we could correct my error in the aspirin. (I think it was about 1.94 in WM’s favor). How many customers comeback to say “I made a mistake and I owe WM money?”

The very next week, I again had to wait for a CSM to come confirm I didn’t need the ads. And again the next week. And the next. And the next. (And the same CSM over and over appeared–and she doesn’t like me) Yet another week, and this time a new cashier really got into with me. I told her I had spoken with manager (named changed) “Jim”- re: ads and I showed her corporate policy. That was it- I wanted to talk to “Jim” so I called -while instore- and spoke with the other co-manager who apologized profusely for my experiences and “she” would address the issue.

Ok, I’ve addressed it over and over and over and over and over and over again. I decided I would NEVER again bring an ad. According to the VERY EXPENSIVE commercials repeatedly say I don’t have to. Sure enough and instead of showing policy, I said just get “Jim” here. That left the cashier a bit scared (since she was new) and instead called a CSM– yup, the one and only who doesn’t like me. She rolled her eyes AT ME and addressed the issue with cashier, who begrudgingly rang me up.

Money talks. I went to Target (just across the street) and had a WONDERFUL experience with a cashier and even went to their CS desk and commended her for her humor (I bought 2 sets of the Raid Bug Spray back when it was on super special) and seeing all the bug spray, she said “you must have a lot of bugs”… and I fell out laughing after telling her I was buying them for 2 houses. I told the CS desk that I came into the store in a very foul mood because of WM and wanted to make sure the cashier was commended formally. The CS desk told me they hear that ALL THE TIME about WM.

Target isn’t perfect either. I’ve noticed that many of my Qs aren’t appropriately matched to items I’ve purchased, as well as some multiples not applied at all (noticed of course long after I was at the store, and was for some high priced items- the John Freida Hair colors).

My reputation at my local CVS was that of a ‘proper couponer’ and when one day I was told LOUDLY by one cashier that my B/W coupon for .50 brownies was a FRAUDULANT coupon that I copied, I flipped my lid. I live where I shop and I refuse to be treated as a CRIMINAL. I don’t take $10 Crest Whitestip coupons and purchase hundreds of dollars of non-Crest product in the store (because some people figured out a glitch in CVS’ computer system that didn’t catch people weren’t even buying the Whitestrips. This has been corrected since this happened). Not only are there about 5 CVS’ within a mile of this one CVS that I can shop at, but it literally put a sour taste in my mouth for giving my money (including my coupon money) to a company that even after it’s addressed with the MANAGER, nothing is done and my concerns were swept aside.

Luckily, since the produce quality at Park/Tollway WM has declined, I can now purchase my produce less than a mile from my house at the BRAND NEW Sprouts – instead of PM’g it at WM. Sorry WM but your slight cuts here and there have lost my produce business- as well as your pricing gimicks on household and personal care items has been (mostly) lost to drugstores, even if that means I have to spend extra time to figure out how their ECBs and RRs work.

And….. I am going to make a shirt that says:
(front) BE NICE TO ME, I AM MAKING YOUR STORE .08 PER COUPON I USE.

(back) BE PATIENT. VERY IMPORTANT CUSTOMER. MY COUPONS ARE MAKING THIS STORE .08 MORE MONEY THAN YOUR CASH DOES.

Enough is enough WM. TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES and DEMAND higher standards of your staff. Your business/bottom line depends on it!

Just a thought… wouldn’t it be WONDERFUL if Wal-Mart would start a Couponer’s line?? You know, just like the express lane… but at least everyone in that line would know what they were in for, and maybe they would have a trained cashier there, that knows what they’re in for… 🙂

That would be amazing! Or have something on their name tag that shows they are “properly trained” in all PM and Coupon policies. All I can say is when you find one that works for you look for them every time. I know the day my people work and I try to shop only on those days and times. Great idea you have though, you should call and suggest it to Walmart!

I think I had that same cashier last Saturday a.m. I took my youngest daughter shopping Sat. morning. We were at the Walmart on Sawdust around 8:30 and started with a McDonald’s breakfast. Our cashier was an older gentleman. He complained during the whole process. I, too, pm the Oak Farm milk and showed the ad and he tried to tell it it didn’t match to the whole milk. I pointed it out and read it to him, then he changed his mind and put in the pm. I had another item pm as well. Then, I handed over the coupons. What did I do that for? He complained on each and everyone. I thought he was going to have a heart attack right there. I apologized for not making his day. He just said it was the coupons needing to be override every time he scans one. My checkout process took at least 30 minutes. I thanked him with a smile. My daughter talked about him, too, on the way to the car.

We have a new manager at the Wal-mart in lumberton ,tx and he has changed Walmarts policy at that store when it comes to the coupons. I have no problem with that but I rarely go in there anymore due to the microscope they put you under. When you have coupons they have a CSM come over and look at all of them before they ever ring up your order. REALLY? I don’t understand why they managers can change a national policy like they do we called corprate but nothing has changed. I now go to the Silsbee walmart which is the same distance. They have no problems with my coupons, they don’t check all of theand, they are actually quiet nice and some of them get excited for me when i save bunches.I did not start couponing to steal,I starting doing this because I have a family of 7 to feed. Times are hard and they should not degrade you are talk down to you just because you want to save money…jus sayin

Ditto. So tired of feeling like that is what all couponers are labeled as. The economy isnt getting any better. Prices are up already 19 percent since last year. I have noticed that alot of the coupons that were a dollar a year ago have gone down to .50 cents. It is getting harder to save money on top of the economic issues lately.

Come on Walmart Save money live better is what couponers are trying to do and we shouldnt feel punished or like a criminal.

Wow, Sounds exactly like my walmart experience yesterday! I needed to go and get my six year old son’s glasses fixed, so I had to take all 4 kids out to do this (ages, 1, 4,5,6!) we stopped by optical waited 10 minutes for one worker, and then decided to do our shopping first and come back. Got a few things and was buying 4 cascade trial pacs with the 1.00/1 coupons, I had 4 of them. I decided that I would go through the self checkout because that has worked best for me to avoid difficult cashiers. Well right when I scanned my coupon the register beeped and said, “amount of coupons used exceeds limit” I only scanned one coupon! So the lady comes over and tries to tell me it is because I am buying the trial. I said “It doesn’t state that I can’t” she rudely walks away and calls a CSM, CSM comes up and says, “the problem is you are using a 1.00 coupon for a .97 cent item, you can’t do this.” I informed her I can and that they actually give overage, she argued that isn’t correct and I was wrong. I asked for a manager, no manager came for 10 minutes. So told her I was going to optical and send the manager over. 15 minutes waiting for help in optical manager comes over, apologizes but no real care. Waited 5 more min. for optical and left without getting the glasses fixed! I don’t think I’ll be shopping at walmart again! Every time I decide to give it another try there, I have a very similar situation with coupons, ahh!!

reading everyone else’s comments make me realize it’s not just me, so that helps a little. I’m terrified to PM at walmart, because cashiers are never friendly. but i love shopping at target by my house(closer than driving to WM) where the cashiers are super nice and never look at coupons, they just scan away or push them through everytime. I save close to $15 to $20 a transaction whenever I shop at Target.

Well well well…..why doesn’t this surprise me a bit? Because I’ve had the same problem over and over and over at different Wal-Marts in the area!!! The first time it happened the supervisor didn’t even know what I was holding (their price match policy)!! She asked me where I had gotten it…I said ‘umm from your website’!
Second time I just used coupons without pricematching and the cashier would look at the picture and would say the items didn’t match which they did. I told her she had to READ the description instead of looking at the picture and she just ROLLED HER EYES and turned to another cashier to ask her about a coupon that wasn’t scanning. After the other cashier told her to go ahead and manually do it she just grunted and entered it. After this trip, I looked at my receipt in my car because the math wasn’t adding up and what happened was that she didn’t scan 4 coupons!! I was soo mad I went home and called their 800# that same day in the evening I had the store manager call me and asked me about it and she had me come in for a $15 GC to make up for the non-scanned coupons and the trouble!! Uggghhh this is my dilema EVERYTIME I go to Wal-Mart!!!!

My Walmart has a sign at each register that says that if you want to price match you have to have the ad (which I didn’t see). I of course was just going by the commercial so I put the item to price match in my cart and went to the register with it. Big Mistake…I was super embarassed because the cashier was so rude, and just pointed to the sign and there were tons of people behind me! I just had her put the item back and I haven’t tried to price match since:/ It was horrifying!

Poor Tiffany!!! I feel your pain!!! I had a similar experience with a cashier here in Michigan!

It was when I was trying to price match Bic Pens to Target (when the coupon and the sale made them free). The package said “ball point pen” the ad said “ball point pen” but she argued with me. My 6 month old was losing it and the cashier still felt it pertinent to argue with me. I finally told her I didn’t want them. Later I ended up writing an e-mail to corporate and the store manager called and apologized to me. 🙂

I have to say my couponing experiences at Wal-Mart have all in all been pretty good. Just 1 -2 cashiers with no knowledge of the policy or bad attitudes. All in all, not so bad.

I wish you smooth transactions at the mart in the future. 🙂

    Tiffany,

I’m so sorry you had that experience. I tried to PM w/o the ad once, just to see how effective it was to show Walmart cashiers their coupon policy, and at first, the cashier asked me about the ad, I pulled out the policy and showed him that I didn’t need to have the ad. Apparently, not all cashiers are educated on the coupon policy, or they weren’t paying attention when it was dicussed during their orientation. Who knows. I followed what you and Paul said about carrying the coupon policy in my binder, and it worked! Hope you do not have anymore of that type of experience.

i would like to know if a competitors coupon is like a store coupon and can be used with a manufactures coupon. the policy states 1 coupon per item, but i have been told that you can use a competitors coupon and a manufactures coupon per item….can someone clarify this for me….

I just got home from WalMart and let me tell you, it does NOT matter if you have the coupon policy with you. I had the policy and was advised that I HAVE to have the whole ad (I had a portion of the ad as I had gone to CVS prior to WalMart and I always clip the items I am purchasing so there is no confusion on my part when I get to the store) or they would NOT price match. The manager said they would do THIS ONE TIME, and it did not matter that corporate said that no ad was required. So, I took your advise and called Corporate. Well guess what I was told – that each store manager CAN override corporate’s policy!!! Needless to say, I am quite shocked at that. I asked the woman at corporate that shouldn’t the store then be required to post a sign or something to state that they are overriding corporate policy so the customers will know that the written policy and tv commerical are incorrect?? She did not have an answer to that. So, I am sorry to say, but I will not be shopping at WalMart much again. I had stopped shopping there prior to the price match and coupon overage changes due to the bade experiences I had time and time again but figured I would would try WalMart again with these changes in place, hoping that things would be better than before I quit shopping there. I am sorry to say, things are not better – they are worse! Thank you for letting me rant/share my experience.

Mandy, I completely understand that this was a frustrating situation and i am sorry your Manager feels that way. If I’m reading this correctly you got to price match and basically you know going forward that your store requires you to have the whole ad. The store manager discretion goes both ways. Many people on here say that their store lets them PM after RR and ECB prices, that is a MGR decision as well. Again, I totally undrstand the frustration with inconsistency, but you are being allowed to price match and thats a good thing.

Paul, yes I was allowed the price match, BUT after having to argue with the manger and him being completely rude to me! If he would have just stated nicely to me that it was that stores policy to require the ad, I may not have gotten quite so upset. I guess the bottom line is I don’t like giving stores my business that don’t want it!! If you can not treat your customers with a little respect, than that store does not want my business. I could even understand if I had gotten ugly or something with him – I didn’t. And the price match was not after RR or ECB’s – I actually do not know how those are handled. My whole problem with the situation was how rude the manager was to me AGAIN!! Like I previously stated, this is not the first time this has happened, but it will be the last time. I will just get rainchecks from the other stores from now on. WalMart does not have anything that other stores do not have and I realize that 1 person no longer shopping there will not hurt them, but maybe if enough people get tired of being treated so badly, Walmart will make some changes. Until then, I won’t be going to Walmart!

Hey Mandy, I wasn’t trying to minimize what happened to you, just trying to give you a bright side. I know it can be really frustrating. Also, I in no way insinuating that you tried to match after ECB or RR prices. I was simply stating that some managers do price match the after RR and ECB and that is a positive of giving the managers some discretion on the policies. Thanks, I hope you’re not leaving me!

Let’s face it there are certain people that just should NOT work in retail. The bigger issue is why the bad attitude and customer service issues are not addressed? I don’t think one bad day warrants termination, but there should certainly be consequences which ultimately lead to termination. Unemployment is very high- hire someone who wants the job and will work hard to keep it! When the economy was good it was hard to find applicants- now you hear about hundreds of applications flooding in for one job! What is most shocking is this behavior coming from a seasoned associate that should be setting a good example and mentoring the new associates that come on board. If Walmart wants to see gains they are going to have to raise the bar. People everywhere are stressed out about real issues like unemployment, foreclosure, and just trying to get food on the table. The number of household that have children that go hungry in them is frightening. People don’t need to be hassled and further stressed by just trying to do their shopping for the week.

Call corporate and complain. There are plenty of unemployed people out there who are willing to do a job well, understand store policies and not be rude to customers. I have called corporate many times on bad (and good for praise) cashiers and will continue to do so. I refuse to be treated like I’m doing something wrong anymore and I make sure the right people know when I am treated this way.
