thanks all! So a couple of things, first I plan to do a major ‘haul’ of these, like several hundred and get cash back for the overage. First thing I wanted to let everyone know incase you were trying to do the same thing is that this particular size of the strips is considered “non-reorderable” by the store so I wasn’t able to just say “hey can you order me 600 of these” the only ones available are the ones on hand at the store, meaning I’ll have to go to a gagillion stores to use all of my coupons.

Second question is to clarify how the whole cash back thing is going to work based on the fine print of the coupon. Can someone clarify for me? I’m assuming that if it’s a .53 overage that I should get essentially a few hundred dollars back with my several hundred coupons, right? Or is there some special caviat? The fine print reads
‘Limit 1 coupon per purchase of indicated product. You pay any sales tax. RETAILER: GSK will reimburse you the face value of this coupon plus .12 handling fee if submitted in compliance with our Redemption Policy. Cash value 1/100 of .01 Coupon is void if altered, transferred, exchanged, sold or auctioned, copied or if prohibited by law. Good only in USA and at APO’S FPO’s.’

I’m a little concerned about the whole “cash value” part but have never done anything like this before? Sorry for the LOONG comment!

I cannot in any way condone what you are proposing to do. I fully understand that it is possible and that the policy allows for it. what are you going to do when the manufacturers make sure there is no overage allowed on products. It is already hard enough to find them. This is a TRIAL size what you are considering goes way beyond the purpose of a trial size product. I am completely powerless to stop you or others that are thinking the same thing. I can honestly say that these types of transactions will ruin it for everyone. It will not take very many times of a MFG not honoring a coupon at Walmart for abuse before the policy will change. I am not trying to yell at you, I just believe that this is at the core of why “EXTREME Couponing” is ruining it for everyone. This is not extreme it is in my opinion greedy and I hope that you will reconsider and leave them for others. Thanks

I completely understand what you are saying, I do. I saw this deal as a chance to be able to stockpile a lot of things some local non profits when combined with a lot of other great deals for cleaning products and such which they desperately need! The overages will cover most of my list of their top needed items including sheets, towels, etc. My intentions are good but I definitely understand the criticism behind couponing this way. I have already spoken with several store managers and have worked a way to take half of their stock on hand leaving the remaining half for other customers.

I am on momma maven’s side all the way. You people act like you have never cleared a shelf and you can’t tell me that you got your stockpiles on 5 or 6 papers a week – some of your pictures show many more than 5 of the same product – If I get a good coupon, I use it whether I have 2 or 20 and so do all of you. You just don’t admit it for fear of being attacked as momma maven was here. What is the point of working to get the overage, if you don’t get the overage and what benefit would it be to use 2 coupons for a 53 cent overage. A free pack of gum? You don’t brag up or promote the Wal-Mart overage because you don’t ever get it, as much or as often as you can. As long as the coupon is legit, then I do not see the issue of you, me or momma maven using them. They are put out there to be used and the manufacturer does not put out any more coupons than they will honor, therefore, If I use 20, momma maven uses 600, you use 5, it doesn’t matter. They were all meant to be used or they would not be issued. There are millions of people who do not use the coupons at all, paying full price for the item, and the manufacturer takes that into consideration when they figure the amount they will issue the coupon for, as well as the number of coupons they will issue. There are times I go to the store and the item I am looking for is gone….my problem. I didn’t get there soon enough to beat someone else. Stop whining because I cleared a shelf, as I do not whine when you do – and whether you admit it or not, you do not go in the store with 10 coupons and only get 3 of the product out of respect for others – you like most people today are out for #1 and you use all 10 of those coupons, or 8 of there are only 8 on the shelf and if you had access to 600 coupons – you would use as many of those as you could. I used to be very faithful to this site, but now I am wondering if I want to follow a bunch of hypocrites or just stay completely away from this garbage.

Vicki, this is different becasue it is a Non-r=orderable item. 300 is not for trial use. I do not or will not EVER advocate clearing a shelf. That is not something that will be supported on this site at all. I cannot stop you or anyone else from doing it, but when you do you are not just hurting the ONE person that can’t get it now. You are hurting yourself for future purchases as well. 1/2 of the reason so many things ar changing is becasue sotres are TIRED of fielding complaints form customers that a shelf has been cleared. Just pre-order if you have a lot of coupons.

            October 25, 2011 at 12:49 pm

Paul, I will stand my ground on this issue. There is no one losing a dime when it comes to coupons being used. Do you think that Wal-Mart did not anticipate this sort of thing when they, on the corporate level, decided to pay overage? Do you think manufacturers are oblivious to the fact that some people will use more than 1 coupon if the product is free? It is Wal-Mart’s policy to pay overage, not “If the product is not a non-reorder item”, not “if you only use 2 coupons”, not “if the overage is too great”. Their policy is to accept as many coupons as you hand them and to receive as much overage as pertains to those coupons. If they are unable to handle people using multiple coupons being used on one product, then it is their fault for offering the opportunity, not mine for taking full advantage. If they are forewarned of the coupons, as Daryl Ann Guy puts it in her post, they should use the foresight and take measures to order as many of the products as they anticipate will be purchased and not offer a policy and then contradict it by pulling the products or not reordering until the coupon expires. When they do this, and they certainly do this regularly, it is they who are unethical and advertising falsely. If they don’t want to pay the overage, they don’t have to and I can assure you that no one has forced their hand to do so. It is not unethical for someone to use their coupons, no matter how many they have or how they obtained them. It is not stealing, it is not bad and the thinking that it is better to throw the coupons away rather than use them because you might upset or offend someone is absolutely insane. And on another note, If you weren’t looking to find even more savings, you would not be pushing Wal-Mart to double coupons. Remember the petition we all signed on your site a while back? Well in my opinion, their coupon policy as it is works well enough, and you are greedy to want them to double the coupons.

            October 25, 2011 at 1:18 pm

            Vicki,
You can stand your ground all you want. The problem is that your view is extremely short sided and the reason why we are seeing such drastic changes in coupons. Companies not using foresight is not the issue, it is their after sight that is going to be the problem. It is people that take the “I am the only one in the world” attitude and don’t look at the big picture. I am telling you with certainty that manufacturers and Walmart will change their policies if people abuse them in a way that was not intended. You can rationalize your actions any way you want, the product clearly says TRIAL SIZE on it. TRIAL MEANS TRIAL, 300 is not a trial. It is abuse. Now if it is a travel size have all you want.

oh my word… this is getting absolutely ridiculous… really. People trying to say that my intentions are greedy, that I am lying about donating, insinuating that I have no founded interest for the whole “cancer card”, I mean my GOD!

To say that I’m ruining it for everyone is a far stretch. As I said I have never done this “big” of a trip before, I dont have time to do that nor would I want to do that, I’d need another house to keep that much product. Second of all, incase everyone missed it, I have contacted several stores and store managers around our town to arrange an amount of product that I can buy that WOULD LEAVE ADDITIONAL PRODUCT for other customers on the shelves. So all of you on the shelf clearing high horse can get over yourselves.

The last thing I can say about all of this is that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and judgement. I don’t care what you all think of what I’m doing. I shouldn’t have even ellaborated on the situation trying to explain myself, there is no use. But dont any of you DARE say things like the “cancer card” … EVER… just remember karma folks, I hope you don’t ever end up in the hell that I’ve been forced into since July because of it all. That is taking it to an entirely different level, shameful.

The world will go on after my couponing trips, crazy I know, but it will.

Momma, I would encourage you to go back and reread my comments. I never questioned any of your intentions or motives. I disagree with your proposed methods. I also stated that I cannot keep you from attempting it, although I was hoping that their wasn’t very many left. I will completely stand by my comments and reiterate my position. I also want to be clear that I do not condone any personal attacks on you and I am really sorry that you are having to go through this extremely difficult situation. I believe the intent of the incredibly insensitive comments, however horrific they may be, are correct. Donating is not an acceptable purpose to do what you either have or want to do. You are actually hurting your cause more in the long run than you are helping them. When companies stop producing coupons that create free items, it will be the charities that suffer the most. People donate because items are free or really inexpensive. The majority of people donating are not wealthy or they would have no need or reason to coupon. I totally get that you are passionate about your cause, this is not the way to help. A lot of people doing a little work is always more effective than a few doing the lions share. I want to personally apologize if you felt like you were being attacked on my site, I will go and delete those portions of the comments. This is a drama free zone, that is one of the most common compliments I get about the site. I intend to keep it that way. That is directed at everyone.

Why yes Lorrie, I AM using the overage to get cash back, a lot of which I am going to use to purchase items for my donations. Stop trying to create drama, I’m done being diplomatic here. I didn’t feel I needed to explain myself until you all decided to jump all over me, judge what you want, it doesn’t bother me but don’t insinuate what you’re trying to do here and make a mockery of the fact that my Dad has cancer and that I have found an unrecognized need to help people because of it. That I will not tolerate.

Hey paul– we all know what she is doing is WRONG but like you said who can stop her.. she will stop herself when we are all not aloud to use coupons. She has it posted on her blog that she can not wait for the day to walk in her basement and see it lined wall to wall with all the free stuff she has gotten.. Come on. At first when I statred couponing I thought the same thing and I still love getting stuff for free but I also love turning around and being able to hand my freebie to a women shelter (any shelter) or since I live in the mid-west helping donate to the tornado victums that lost everything, I just dont understand how we all know toothpaste and deo and such are on sale every week. No one person needs to buy 200 tubes everyweek. With all this “Extreme Couponing” We as a country should not be starving for food or lacking basic hygine needs. Yes I have my small stockpile that my family(sister, aunts, cousins) do there weekly free shopping from but at 6 papers a week I can not be called a hoarder.
Thank you Paul for all the hard work you do. Love your posts!!!

Well we’re all entitled to our own opinions, I respect everyone’s opinion here. I typically buy 4 papers for my family of 4 and I have a nice little stockpile that works for our family. I absolutely can’t wait to walk into my basement with wall to wall shelves of items that will feed and sustain my family for pennies on the dollar, I dont see how anyone in this economy would want otherwise!

Regardless, as I said this will be my largest ‘purchase’ so to speak and it is being used to benefit lots of others which is why I have compiled so many coupons for this trip. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer 3 months ago and while being submersed into the ‘cancer world’ I’ve met sooo many foundations that need help and donations, specifically housing facilities that allow parents to remain with their children undergoing chemo, and lots of other places that I am excited to benefit! I respect everyone’s opinion and I dont mind the judgement from others… wouldn’t be the first time in my life 🙂

Thank you for sharing this offer! I am fairly new to this too & I now check your site for specials before I go to Walmart. I was able to get this & a few other items with coupons & had the .53 cents overage from this coupon applied to other items I was buying as well. There were maybe 6 or 7 of the strips left after I got my one, so I don’t see how realistic the above mentioned “haul” would be. Hopefully she will reconsider. Thanks again!

        Wow,

I have only been couponing for about 6 months it is still very new to me but my family could not make it with out the coupons at this time in my life. I have to say that this is over the top. I do get 10 papers and coupon for my family of 5 and for some other family members who need help. I would never take all the products even when I have 10 coupons I try to go to more than one store and never clear the shelf. I do not understand why people have to be like this. I am so thankful for your site and share it with everone I know .

Please do not do this momma maven I already have problems at Walmart using coupons because of just this kind of thing. There are people that need coupons to make it and there is enough to go around if we all do the right thing.

PLEASE! PLEASE! Don’t throw away coupons!! Even expired ones!

Did you know that overseas military members can use expired coupons up to six months past their expiration date? Military families stationed overseas are often living on one income and money can be scarce. Let’s support our military by showing them some coupon love!

I would like to know where Momma Maven got SEVERAL hundred of these coupons. Momma, please do not try to justify your unethical actions by playing the (edited by paul) donations card. We all have some time of issues in our lives, but we do not resort to such greed. You are completely missing the point of why you should NOT carry out your MASSIVE purchase. You will be contributing to the demise of couponing as we know it. You will become part of the ‘Problem’, and ruin it for the rest of us who are just simply trying to ease the financial burdens of our households. I ask you to please reconsider your shopping trip and think of how this will affect the innocent. Not to mention, you are also cutting your own nose to spite your face. You too will lose in the end.

Walmart’s coupon policy states that there is a limit of 40 coupons per transaction however it also leaves it up to the store manager wheather to take more than 40 or not.
I hate it when I get my 2 coupons go to the store and look for something only to be told that someone came in with 30 coupons and took all that they had. That is one reason that P&G puts a limit to how many coupons you can use at one time. Others will soon follow if we can’t control ourselves.

here is no limit to the number of coupons you can use in a transaction. It states that over forty requires a manager to turn the key or verify the transaction.

I am so tired of hearing the “I’m doing this so i can donate everything for this cause and that cause…..” donating much needed items and being charitable is great! But buying out every store around you because you can make a few hundred dollars is horrible and wrong. That’s what happens with all these coupons that you can get overage on. Same thing with the Schick razors. I’ve heard people say they have bought 100 packages of them at a time and left with $100 in their pocket. Greedy greedy greedy people have taken over the couponing world and have made it a pain for the ones who are doing it to help support our families!

I agree what they need to do is make sure that people do not walk out with cash but your overage needs to be given in a gift card form. Im all for couponing to support your family i just started in April but i would like to continue. With stunts like that prices go up and you will have to coupon to pay regular price.

Ok I have to comment on the razor deal. I was one of the ones that were lucky to print two of the $6 off two coupons and after my purchase and reading the blogs, I found out that the packages had $3 coupons inside which would give you overage. After my purchase and going home to open two more, I thought to myself that I could keep this deal going. Then I stopped and felt convicted. Here I was being greedy just to get an overage and there are many individuals out there that could use these razors. Homeless people, women and men in shelters or just a family in need- I had to stop. I refuse to keep doing this deal just to get an overage. There is no way I can use that many razors. As a new couponer, the temptation is there to “get it all” but we as individuals have to stop and think of others. I only am focused on getting what my family needs and if I can get a few more, I do and I give it away. Stores will start changing their policies if people continue to take advantage. There is nothing wrong with stockpiling but I feel that I am blessed by getting items at a good deal and have to bless others my not clearing the shelf. I was talking to a senior citizen the other day at the store and she told me that she had been searching for a product every day that week. She said she could not drive from store to store because she did not like to drive far from home. Here is a nice woman that does not use coupons. She just wanted one item and someone came and cleared the shelf making it hard for this poor woman. I am not sure if it was couponer that did it or maybe the store did not stock up. I am saying this to say, always think that there are others out there that do not coupon all they want is one item. I am glad I changed my way of thinking. Sorry, for the long post I had to let that out 

There is no way any Wal-Mart would have a “several hundred” of these, most of the time when there is a trial/travel size there is like 30-40 of one item. So unless you are going to hit up every WM in a few state area, I don’t think this will work. I also agree with the above comments, that this is over the top! Couponers have already seen a decreased amount of “good” coupons and good deals, and this will only contribute to the issue. If this continues, good luck trying to get these deals to ever come up again. It would be better to use restraint, buy a few each time and donate those for the rest of your life. THen to buy “several hundred” once and not be able to “donate” anything later.

The coupon doesn’t expire until 12/31 so there is no reason to get 600 of these all at once. That’s outrageous! And for the $$ you spent buying these coupons/papers you could have just donated the cash. The shelters would like the cash over Breath Rite strips any day, I’m sure. 🙂

I had a cashier try to “pull” that on me too, when I politely explained to her that Wal-mart’s policy states that any overage is applied to the cart purchase she said “okay, well I will try it” of course it worked, to her (I think) feined surprise. The way I see it, they are getting reimbursed for the total of the coupon, plus 8 cents, so if they reduce the amount they are giving you off, THEY are committing coupon fraud. I even had this discussion with a Walgreens manager and she agreed, if you can’t change the value of a coupon to make it more, then you also should be prohibited from making it less since the store is getting reimbursed for the full amount.

I can understand if it’s an instance of somewhere that actually doubles coupons and it exceeds the amount, because that double amount is coming out of their pocket, but even Harris Teeter will give you the overage on your double or triple (just not on e-vic).

i got 7 of them last night i was so excited! but was not too glad the way the cashiers treated me last night. They said it has to be BOX. I told them nicely no it doesnt, so she went to get another person and off they go in their little corner whispering, (mind you im deaf so i read lips and speak pretty well) and she came back was like im sorry i cant do it. No i wasnt going to take that, so i went over there showed them other coupon to show the example of exclude travel and trial size). Then the other woman who the cashier spoke with gave me an attitude saying oh no we arent talking about that we are talking about we cant give you money. i was getting frustrated, told them nicely again it was in the policy i have done this before and i know the overage policy too blah blah she answered nastily saying oh someone else werent supposed to, so i gave up and said i want to see a manager. She said she could do giftcards im like fine whatever i dont know whats the big deal is either way, and she tried to get the machine to register to work with the giftcards, didnt work ended up giving me cash.. now can i say? karma? lol but i made 3.71 that will be going to a fund jar, ive been wanting to try those breathe right strips! hope it works as they say 😛

I tried to explain that no it has to be what it says and all it says is 12 ct or smaller. Also the reason the cashier even called the csm was because she didnt know if i could get that much overage…I showed her my print out of the store policy and told her i didnt think it should matter because the store gets the 1.50 face value of the coupon and she said no they will only reimburse us for the 97 cent price of the product. Thats the first time ive ever heard that all coupons say you get back the face value of it??? So needless to say very frustrated with my walmart today, has anyone else had this issue??

I think many of you have misjudge momma. How do you know she is not taking care of those she has spoken of. She sounds pretty honest. You could give her advice like break up your transaction day by day or do once per week so as not to clear the shelves. Take only a few at a time. I don’t believe in clearing shelves myself but I do want to take advantage of the opportunity especially when I have spent money on obtaining the extra coupons. So far I’ve only broke even and who knows I might lose a few because we don’t know for sure if Walmart will continue to stock such items. And no I don’t have a gazillion thing of one item. Heck my freezer is only 1/4 full; My toothbrushes are fewer than 10, just a couple of example. Oh and there are 6 of us.

Autum, I am not questioning what whe is doing with the stuff she is getting. I have an issue with how she is getting it. I do not think people should abuse the system to get large amounts of cash. That is money that comes from the manufacturers that produce the coupons. This is also a product that CANNOT be ordered. It is a trial size product and 200-300 is no longer a trial. I don’t question peoples intent or what they do with the products they get. I do not believe anyone SHOULD donate just because they coupon. The only time you I think you should is if YOU want to.

Coupons have been around for a long time now. In fact every year there seems to be more and more of different types of coupons out there. So i wouldnt worry about coupons dissapearing. Manufactures put out so many coupons and write them off. As long as the coupon is used on the right product, the store gets the face value. I dont believe the stores or some fellow couponer has the right to question how some one uses their coupon as long as it is used in the correct way. I believe everyone has a obligation to give back. It shouldnt be just if YOU WANT TO. I cant afford to give $100’s of dollars away every week, but with coupons I can give $100’s of dollars worth of product away with not spending $100. If someone wants to get 200 breathe right strips and get all the overage, I think it is smart. Breathe Right isnt dumb, if they wanted it to exclude trial size, they would of. Just be happy for the deals that we do get.

Matt, coupons have been around for a long time. They are also dramatically changing right now. This item is not a permanent stock trial size, breathe right doesn’t have those. This is a promo item and was obviously overlooked in the timing. I don’t discourage people from using them on the item I found the deal and posted it. I don’t think one person should take it away from potentially hundreds of people to donate it. On a side note are you honestly saying that you believe people should be forced to donate, wouldn’t that take away the gratification. Besides, we are all forced to donate anyway, it is called taxes.

    Hi Paul

Just a thought here on what Momma Maven said. My husband works for the Mart and although everybody likes the deals on the FULL SIZE products i.e. Schitck Razors. They send out notice to the stores warning them of the q s. People like that although the intentions may be for the better need to understand that it truly does ruin it for everyone. If the store is losing money like on the razor and dental floss deals above and beyond the Q they will do what is called a non reorder. I found this out when my local store stopped stocking the razors just a heads up. A little overage is ok every now and then but they are not there to substansiate your income. 99% of stores double or give rewards like drugstores knowing that you will roll over the money on other products but if people like mm take the gift card those can be sold of course. I just hopes she donates that to charity too.

I tried this deal at my Walmart today and they had a fit. I only had 4, did not clear anything by the way. They had to have the store manager come up but he reluctantly let my coupons go through but then they wanted to know if there were more of these so I’m sure they went back and did something with what was left. I don’t know why it was a big deal. The coupon clearly says “any”.

I was at Walmart today and tried to buy 8 packs. I was going to use the overage to buy some items that i needed for dinner. The cashier questioned the coupon. Then she called over the CSM. He said they could not take the coupon for the trial size. According to him trial size is not a size. lol. Not sure what that ment. When I seen the extreme couponing t.v. show I was so excited because I just knew that it was something I was going to learn to do. However I couldn’t understand why people were buying 500 pens? Or 150 tubes of toothpaste. However, I immediately thought I would love to have a stockpile that could support my family for 1-2 years in case my husband ever lost his job (I’m a stay at home mom). I’ve just recently began to find deals that I could get items for cheap or free. I was so excited to get the $8/2 coupon for covergirl face makeup. I went to the store and the selves were cleared! I was so disappointed. I had planned on using the coupon to get 2 blushes which would have given me overage and then getting a liquid foundation and powder ( I had 2 coupons). The selves were cleared of anything remotely around $4/$5 each. That same day I went to find several deals around the store that I had seen online only to find the selves were cleared. I can understand the excitement to be able to get that much overage on an item. Especially if I can get many of that same item. However, If I knew that I was going to buy more than any store would have on the shelves, I believe I would only do so if I could contact the store and make sure that they had enough items to restock or either have my items ready when I got there. Just because I know how disappointed I have been going to the store and almost always finding the item is sold out simply because I didn’t get there quick enough. Just food for thought.
