Being Prepared and Why It’s a Good Idea

Feb 4 by Monika Leave a Comment

FB_IMG_1454606680697

Hey guys it’s Monika from the I Heart the Mart Team and I wanted to take a short break from sharing all those amazing Walmart Deals with you guys to bring it back to reality and how important it is to be be prepared. Just last night my area was struck by a very random tornado (You can read the full News Story HERE) that NO ONE was prepared for or expected. We had no warning and the sirens didn’t actually go off until it had already been here and gone honestly. So how does that tie in with being prepared? We lost power BEFORE it even hit, just barely before it hit my street actually, had I not opened the door to let some light in I would never have known anything. (There were no injuries or fatalities at ALL) All in all about 40 homes were damaged and those families were given free lodging at a nearby hotel and we’ve had a great community step up and donate everything these families need.

[metaslider id=156987]

Here are some basic things that are a good idea to keep on hand:

  • Flashlights (if you can find the hand crank ones even better in case you run out of batteries)
  • Candles (supplies to make candles, you literally only need string and a can for this)
  • Aluminum or thin pans (to warm food up with if need be)
  • Water (water water and more water)
  • Small first aid kits stocked (Walmart carries these in the travel section for $1.00)
  • Food that is shelf stable (can survive without being refrigerated like canned goods)

If you want to take it a step further get a book bag together with extra clothes, food, and such as some call them Bug Out Bags. These area great idea if you need to actually LEAVE your home quickly.

If you don’t have your supplies yet GET THEM NOW because once it happens and say the power goes out for example, you can’t find anything in the dark right? Make sure you have those flashlights in an easy accessible spot to get to quickly just in case.

Thanks WTOC News for the amazing photos!

Is being prepared something you’d love for I Heart the Mart to expand on and do more posts on? Let us know in the comments!

5 Tips for Throwing a Super Saver Super Bowl Party

Jan 31 by Paul Ivanovsky Leave a Comment

superbowl 2016 Iheartthemart.comAre you ready to throw a Super Bowl Party but you aren’t sure you can make it as Super as the game? We have you covered! Here are 5 tips that will make your party the best Super Bowl Party in the neighborhood. We love to host parties and events at our house and everyone leaves our party happy and full.

The Eats

Food is the SINGLE most important part of a killer Super Bowl Party! With all of the different food allergies and picky eaters there is only one sure fire way to make sure that there is something EVERYONE will like. Can you say “Pot Luck!” Pot Luck is the best way to make sure there is a huge variety of food and something that every guest will eat. This is a win for everyone before the game even starts! You are cooking less, spending less money and you know everyone is going to bring their best dish!

A golf buddy of mine has a chili cook off each year for the Super Bowl, I don’t recommend this theme. Chili is awesome, but it doesn’t make for much food variety and most people will clear out after half time due to exhaust fumes. For our Pot Luck Party we assign families either an entree or an appetizer and then a dessert or something sweet. Telling them what to make really takes the pressure off them, so don’t worry about being bossy. We do make a couple entrees and side dishes of our own and trust me that is way better than trying to make a gazillion things.

Want some Super Bowl Recipe Ideas?

I recommend shopping for Super Bowl food at Walmart to save the most money. Use their Price Match Policy to get other local grocery store deals all in one place. If you aren’t familiar with Price Matching I can teach you!

5 Tips for Throwing a Superbowl Party

Refreshments

We provide all sodas, water and make our favorite sparkling drink: raspberry lemonade with sprite. Another one of our favorites include Rootbeer and/or Cream Soda in a nice cold frosty mug! YUM! We don’t buy any alcohol for our parties. There are two reasons, the main one is that we don’t drink alcohol and the second one is that you make sure everyone gets home safe. If you do drink and choose to have alcohol I also recommend telling people to bring what they want to drink. People tend to be pretty picky about their libations, so let them bring their own. It is also a great way to keep the cost down. If you are going  to provide adult refreshments there are sure to be great sales Super Bowl Weekend that you can price match!

Big Screens

I didn’t say TV’s or Big Screen, I said “Big Screens!” I think a requirement to live in Texas is that you have multiple big screens, one in there garage and one in the house. I haven’t been able to convince Tiffany to let me put one in my garage yet, but I really want to. Right now is a great time to buy a Big Screen, there are a ton of sales and last years leftovers that you can find marked down.

I recommend Walmart and Best Buy for the hottest deals. Big Screens should be defined as 55″ and up, your secondary TV can be 47″ or so but I wouldn’t go any smaller. You will have guest complaining and squinting, more importantly people will not be able to see all the Super Bowl Commercials. If you are looking for some great deals checkout some of Walmart’s hot deals on TV’s.

  • 50” Vizio 4K UHD TV for $598
  • 55” Vizio Smart LED HDTV for $568
  • 55” LG 4K UHD TV for $698 ($300 Savings)

But, bigger isn’t always better.  For those looking for a smaller television (perhaps as a second screen?), Walmart also has:

  • 32” Sony LED HDTV for $198 (Special Buy)
  • 40” Sony Smart HDTV for $348
  • 43” LG  LED HDTV for $298 ($50 savings)

Decorations

Since the Superbowl and our Texans didn’t quite make it this year, I think it is fun to split the room up so fans can pick a side. Families may be divided but that’s okay, this is the Super Bowl.

Now, if you happen to not be originally from Texas and have a team in the game then you should take the “NOT IN MY HOUSE” mentality. Place a black & white 19″ TV in a closet and label it the “Loser Room” for the other team’s fans.

The Guests

Bring it on! I personally invite about 2 times as many people as I really want there. You will have people that come and go, so don’t worry about fire codes!

Must Know Tips When Shopping at Aldi

Jan 27 by Paul Ivanovsky 1 Comment

Must Know Tips When Shopping at Aldi

Aldi is a no frills, no gimmicks grocery store, with some of the best prices you will ever find! Aldi is able to keep the cost of food down for it’s costumers by avoiding paying certain unnecessary expenses. Smaller than most grocery stores Aldi only has 5-6 aisles while you may find 30+ aisles in your local big box grocery store. I actually love the small store environment for a few reasons. First it makes getting in and out of the store nice and fast (which is exceptionally nice when you are grocery shopping with kids). Secondly, there are less choices when it comes to products. Instead of looking at 20 different brands of Maple Syrup, there is just 1 or 2 to choose from.

Aldi has their own brand which is significantly cheaper than the name brand options. Their brands are not only cheaper but they are quite comparable in flavor and quality. Many times you will find that the packaging for the Aldi brand products may look similar to a specific name brands packaging, this is so you can see which brand it is comparable to.

Since a majority of products found at Aldi are not name brand there is no need to bring your coupons. Leave your coupons at home and enjoy low cost grocery shopping without the hassle of clipping or even remembering your coupons.

Make sure to bring a quarter with you. Aldi keeps their overhead costs low by using cart return system. You put a quarter in the cart to use it and when you return your cart at the end of your shopping trip you will get your quarter back. This keeps both the parking lot clear of stray carts and keeps the cost down of having to pay for extra employees, thus resulting in lower food costs for you!

Bring your own bags. Again Aldi is able to keep their food costs so low by avoiding extra costs in certain areas. Grocery bags is one of these areas. Simply bring your own bags or pay for one of their HUGE bags (they are awesome) for just $0.10. You can also choose to go bagless and just carry your food or find a box around the store. Also there are no baggers at Aldi, so be prepared to bag your own groceries. This is another cost saving opportunity.

Bring cash, debit or your EBT card. Aldi does not take checks or credit cards.

Aldi has a money back guarantee! If you don’t like something you can return it for a full refund. But that’s not all, they are not only willing to refund you for the product but will double the guarantee by also letting you pick another similar product for free as well. That means you will get your money back and get a free product! See more details HERE.

Best Deals to Buy at Aldi:

  • Produce: This is no joke you can get produce for a fraction of the cost at any other grocery store. For instance often times you will find avocados for just $0.29 each.
  • Dairy: Milk is often times on sale for less than $2.00 a gallon! Cheese, yogurts, sour creams are all by far the best deals you will find (even with using coupons!)
  • Snacks: Aldi has several choices when it comes to snack foods. We have found with many products we like Aldi’s brands better than name brands no matter what. Don’t even get me started on their Honey Wheat Pretzels!
  • Meats: Keep your eye’s peeled for Aldi’s weekly advertisements. They often times feature a meat product for a fantastic price per pound. We have enjoyed getting chicken breasts for under $1.70/lb, racks of ribs in the summer and more!
  • Organic: That’s right Aldi has an awesome Organic section that is ridiculously well priced!

Lastly, if you are not interested in shopping at Aldi for whatever reason, don’t forget that you can price match Aldi’s meat, dairy and produce prices at Walmart (See Walmart’s Price Match Policy HERE)!

5 Products You Can Make Cheaper Than Buying Premade

Jan 19 by Paul Leave a Comment

5 Products You Can Make Cheaper Than Buying Premade

You probably already know that when you buy pre-made foods in a box that you are mostly paying for the convenience of it. What you may not know is exactly how much you are paying for that convenience and how much time it doesn’t take to make the product yourself.

While some things on this list are things you are willing to pay extra for, others are not and you may just decide that making them yourself is the way to go.

1. Microwave popcorn. Purchase an air popper and you will save so much money on this movie time snack. A bag of plain popcorn is less than $2.00 and you can get 10-12 bowls of popcorn out of it, making it less than a quarter a bowl and pennies a serving! Plus, you can eat it plain or with any toppings you want and control the flavor and fat.

2. Flavored yogurts. Each serving costs between 40 cents and a dollar when you buy fruit flavored yogurt. If you buy plain vanilla or unflavored in larger tubs and add fruit preserves to it, you can make it much more frugally.

3. Spaghetti sauce. Everyone has a “secret sauce” recipe for this, but if you are not sure where to look for it, just check Pinterest. Making your own spaghetti sauce is amazingly cheaper. You can make gallons on it for about that same price as a couple jars of the other stuff. Plus, it freezes really well so it can be saved for many meals. If you are worried it is time consuming, don’t. You can make it in a crick pot.

4. Gourmet Coffee. This one is kind of more of a cheat than myself telling you not to buy it at all. You can make your gourmet flavors go further by buying half gourmet and half cheap brand. Just mix together and you will not even notice a difference. If you want to add fancy flavors, try adding cinnamon to it!

5. Any Individual sized snacks. These are HUGE money wasters. Just buy large boxes and bags of your favorite snacks and bag them up yourself. You will save more than half the cost in many cases. Hint: “Baby” carrots are not a magical type of carrot. They are just cut that way by a machine. You can save a tin by cutting up your own carrots and individually bagging them.

How to Help Cuts and Scrapes Heal Faster with Essential Oils

Apr 14 by Paul Ivanovsky Leave a Comment

If you follow Mylitter and I Heart the Mart on Facebook you might have seen the post of our little Daredevil and his crash that scraped up his face and wrists on Easter.  This is not the first crash and won’t be the last but this is the first time we used Lavender Essential Oils on his face to heal it. rush faceLavender is a very gentle oil and is even great on sensitive skin.  We applied the lavender to his face and he immediately noticed the pain was gone and it scabbed up a lot faster than normal. We heard that Lavender stopped bleeding and helped with scraps and cuts but didn’t think of how fast the healing process was going to be. Now that it has been a few days the scab is now flaking off and you can see underneath the scab the skin is healing. rush wristWe didn’t add any oils to his wrist to see if we could actually tell a difference. I mean really, it’s lavender it sounds pretty strange.  If you look at the picture above you will see that his hand scabbed up as well but he has lots of pink area around it, it’s more sensitive. You can just tell that it’s not as far along in the healing process as his face that we used Lavender Essential Oils with.
I have been a real skeptic but the more and more we actually use these essential oils it is amazing how much they are helping our family.  Another great thing about these oils are they help with many different things. Lavender has so many uses like:

  • Cuts & Scrapes
  • Calming
  • Eczema
  • Sunburns
  • Detox Baths
  • Cleaner
  • Motion Sickness
  • Cold Sores
  • Headaches and so much  more

We think every house needs to have Lavender Essential Oils in it. If you have been looking into Essential Oils now is a great time to sign up with a Young Living wholesale account. Let’s think about it, you can always pay retail for this product but WHY? We all coupon and try to save the most money and this is no exception.

Right off the bat you get

  • 11 oils that you will find yourself using every single day,
  • a diffuser,
  • roller ball,
  • samples,
  • company information and a
  • 24% discount on future orders with no obligation to purchase anything. You don’t have to sell it unless you want to earn some extra money.

Plus I will give you:

  • the Quick Reference guide with 400+ pg,
  • Essential Oil Starter Guide,
  • Essential Oils Bottle Top Stickers,
  • Essential Oils travel kit, and
  • Access to e-books, e-courses, Facebook support Groups and MORE!!

That is an additional $30 in freebies and you are helping your family.  This Premium Starter Kit is valued at $300 but you can get everything you see below for only $150!  If you are skeptic like we were, I totally understand, seeing is believing, I just wish we didn’t wait and had these products a couple years ago. tiffany oils

Flip Flops – DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops that I Made for My Wife

Jul 9 by Paul Ivanovsky 2 Comments

Flip Flops - DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops

Flip Flops are a summer wardrobe staple for my wife.  She doesn’t go anywhere without a pair of sandals on her cute little feet. She probably has way too many flip flops but when I asked her about it she said: “I just don’t think that’s possible when different flip flops go with everything”.  I made these DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops  to go with a specific skirt she has and was complaining that she didn’t have ANYTHING that matches. Sure she didn’t, but who am I to judge?!?!

Flip Flops – DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops

Supplies:

  • inexpensive flip flops (I found these on clearance at Walmart for $3)
  • fabric scraps – about 52 pieces 4″-6″ long and 1″ wide

Walmart has a crazy selection of fabric in their stores that do have a fabric department. One of my stores doesn’t have it anymore but one that is about a mile further still does.  I especially love the packages of fabric that are already cut to size and for these flip flops I used some of the 2″ wide x 42″ long strips that I had left from a previous project of Tiffany’s.

Flip Flops - DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops

Instructions:

Honestly, these flip flops could not be easier to make. HELLLOOOOO, I made these!  Once you have your strips of fabric cut to length, tie them around the strap of the flip flop.  You’ll want to double knot each strip so that it does not come untied later.

Flip Flops - DIY Fabric Scrap Flip Flops

Continue adding the fabric scraps onto the straps until the strap is covered.  You’ll want to space the scraps tight together to be sure they look full.

An added bonus to covering flip flop straps in fabric is the fabric is soft and makes for a really comfortable flip flop, especially when covering a plastic or rubber strap that often rubs against skin.

You can create flip flops like these for any occasion.  You could use really fancy fabric to coordinate with a special dress, red white and blue for the 4th of July, or a pair to match your child’s first day of school outfit.  They are great for little girls, teens, and women.  These fabric scrap flip flops are a fun project to make together!

I don’t want any of you thinking that I deserve a medal, I have seen this done before. I will say that seeing my wife do it a few years ago and me making a pair myself are two TOTALLY different things!!!
